Since I know summer is the best time for reading good books, it seems our former President, Barack Obama is an avid reader too! Now, I have known this since way back when and while actually running for office. But recently I saw on his Facebook page his shares of summer reading he will be doing while traveling to Africa. I thought, “why not share what Barack will be reading this summer with all of you.”
Barack, while in office, was always a “surprise” visitor of bookstores no matter where he happened to be, or where he happened to be traveling as our President. He was never shy about saying “hello” to all the patrons and workers that happen to be inside the stores either! I feel that is some of what makes him such a special person. And there are many documented visits through the eight years he held office, just look them up on Google!
So here, courtesy of what he posted on his Official Facebook Page today is all about traveling to Africa and what he will be reading while on vacation. ~Catherine Lyon

“Over the years since, I’ve often drawn inspiration from Africa’s extraordinary literary tradition. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I’d recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa’s best writers and thinkers – each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways.”

“This week, I’m traveling to Africa for the first time since I left office – a continent of wonderful diversity, thriving culture, and remarkable stories.”
I was proud to visit sub-Saharan Africa more times than any other sitting President, and I’ll return this week to visit Kenya and South Africa. In South Africa, the Obama Foundation will convene 200 extraordinary young leaders from across the continent and I’ll deliver a speech to mark the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. Kenya, of course, is the Obama ancestral home. I visited for the first time when I was in my twenties and I was profoundly influenced by my experiences – a journey I wrote about in my first book, Dreams from My Father.
Over the years since, I’ve often drawn inspiration from Africa’s extraordinary literary tradition. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I’d recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa’s best writers and thinkers – each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways …
Barack Obama’s Summer Reading List:
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
A true classic of world literature, this novel paints a picture of traditional society wrestling with the arrival of foreign influence, from Christian missionaries to British colonialism. A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.
A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o
A chronicle of the events leading up to Kenya’s independence, and a compelling story of how the transformative events of history weigh on individual lives and relationships.
Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela
Mandela’s life was one of the epic stories of the 20th century. This definitive memoir traces the arc of his life from a small village to his years as a revolutionary, to his long imprisonment, and ultimately his ascension to unifying President, leader, and global icon. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand history – and then go out and change it.
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
From one of the world’s great contemporary writers comes the story of two Nigerians making their way in the U.S. and the UK, raising universal questions of race and belonging, the overseas experience for the African diaspora, and the search for identity and a home.
The Return by Hisham Matar
A beautifully written memoir that skillfully balances a graceful guide through Libya’s recent history with the author’s dogged quest to find his father who disappeared in Gaddafi’s prisons.
The World As It Is by Ben Rhodes
It’s true, Ben does not have African blood running through his veins. But few others so closely see the world through my eyes like he can. Ben is one of the few who’ve been with me since that first presidential campaign. His memoir is one of the smartest reflections I’ve seen as to how we approached foreign policy, and one of the most compelling stories I’ve seen about what it’s actually like to serve the American people for eight years in the White House.

And This Includes READING … Happy Summertime Reading Friends!

I happen to come across an interesting blog post over on “Writer UnBoxed” as I feel all authors and writers need to read this post. Since I do book promotions and literary consulting as my every day at home business, I could sure relate to this post! And I know many of you will too. As an author myself, I do know how hard it is to get our books into the hands of readers.
It took my first book a good year to catch fire with hours of listing and promoting it everywhere I could find. As we all know it does NOT happen overnight and we have to be diligent as it is why many writers hire me to promote their books and build a readership and I work on the social media side in building their following as well. There is no real recipe or guarantees. WHY?
.

.
Because there are several factors to consider. How well written is the book? What genre is the book? Is it a hard genre to promote? How popular is the author? Well, there are many ways to tackle these questions. But that will have to be another post for another day. But when you have been promoting your books hard? It is OK to take a breather every now and then as this weeks post and blog spotlight indicates. Here is a little of the Guest Post and I hope you will visit “Writer UnBoxed” as that is the MAIN Purpose for Spotlighting them! Lol.
.
HAPPY BOOK PROMOTING!

Writers get tired.
The process of writing, of editing, of writing some more, of editing some more, of searching for representation, of reworking the book yet again, of waiting so long to see your words in print that you forget you even wrote some of them, of publishing in its maddening and bountiful entirety… well, some days, it can feel like too much.
Every stage has its own ups and downs, but personally, I find the promotion stage both the most exciting and the most challenging. Many parts of the publishing process can feel out of your control. Partly that’s because they are. But promotion is different because, unlike other stages, it has the capacity to go on forever. The joy and terror of publishing in the social media age that once you have a book, you literally could be promoting it every minute of every day.
(Note to writers everywhere: do NOT promote your book every minute of every day.)
Right now, my latest book (published under a pseudonym, as regular readers know) has been out in paperback for a few months. Typically, this is when a publisher’s efforts to promote the book taper off and any further promotion is squarely in my hands.

Since we are starting a fresh New Year, I came across TWO exceptional articles from my friend and PR Expert, Marsha Friedman that shares two vital parts to marketing you, your books, and Brand! We can never have too much advice from a Public Relations firm that Marsha runs and is the founder of. Let’s make 2018 our “Year To Shine!”

Marsha Friedman+ by | Jan 3, 2018.| General Marketing, PR Education
The start of a New Year is always a great time to focus on creating a “new you” – or at least an improved version of the old you.
Sometimes we do that through resolutions about dieting and exercise that, sadly, we don’t always keep. Sometimes we enter January vowing that in the next 12 months we will travel more, read more or spend more time with the family.
As you look ahead to all the possibilities that a New Year brings, let me suggest that if you’ve been letting your personal brand languish, 2018 can be your time to shine! It can be the year you rise from obscurity to fame – or at least to recognition as a voice of authority and go-to expert in your field. You just need to be willing and determined to make it happen!
You can bet that if you don’t, someone else – possibly a direct competitor – is going to step into the limelight that you neglected. They will be the ones polishing up their personal brands and, as a result, speaking with journalists, chatting with radio and TV show hosts, and linking to their media success stories on their websites.
Several years ago when I wrote my book Celebritize Yourself, personal branding hadn’t become quite as widespread as it is today. Certainly, some people – Zig Ziglar, Suze Orman and Bob Greene, just to name a few – had become extraordinarily successful at it, but at that time there weren’t always as many ways for people to promote themselves as there are now.
Most of the social media platforms that we have come to take for granted were either in their formative years or were dismissed as being irrelevant or unimportant. How quickly that changed! Now it’s so easy for anyone to create a Facebook, Twitter or other social media account and introduce themselves to the world.
Meanwhile, the old-school ways of promoting yourself via earned media in print, on radio and TV are still around, too. With so many opportunities out there, let me suggest just a few things you can do in 2018 to make this the year you take your personal brand to a new level:
So make a vow that 2018 will be your year! Although it may seem a daunting task, this really can be the year you create a truly authentic personal brand that will positively sparkle by the time 2019 arrives.
That’s a resolution definitely worth keeping…Shine on!

Yes, this is me shining on!! Now to our next article!

This week my creative team and I were in the middle of just such a session when Jay York, our senior social media strategist, intrigued me with his thoughts about current trends in video marketing.
Let’s face it. With today’s technology, combined with the vast reach of social media, it’s easier than ever to create your own video segments that can become an integral part of your overall marketing strategy. You don’t even need a studio worthy of “Good Morning, America” or special effects that would make you the envy of George Lucas. In fact, the less formal the production is the better.
And once you arrive at your finished product, you can put your video on Youtube, share it on other social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and post a link to it from your website.
Frankly, you can get a lot of marketing mileage out of just one video – but you shouldn’t stop there because there are so many approaches you can take. You might create a series of short messages filled with insights into your area of expertise.
You might want to show your company culture with glimpses of team-building outings for example. It can show you’re a fun company to work with, or that you’re philosophically aligned and share commonalities with potential clients. These can be deciding factors when choosing a company to work with. At EMSI, we often use videos for those peeks inside the company, sharing them on Instagram!
So, with an assist from Jay, let me offer a few tips on what you should do to get started and get the most out of your video marketing this year:
A video is going to be more relevant in marketing in 2018 than ever before, which means you need to give serious consideration to incorporating it into your overall strategy.
Granted, not everyone enjoys going in front of a camera. I get that! But I also know the importance of video, so I’m going to suggest you overcome any camera fright and, if you haven’t already done so, take the video plunge! And yours in high definition!

I thought it would be a fun idea if all of my visitors, friends, and readers would share in my comment area what we happen to be “Giving Thanks” for this long Thanksgiving weekend. The holidays are a time we can reflect on how our year has been going and about holidays past with family and friends sharing good food and more. . . .
It can a great time to share with others what we enjoy about life and how others have a positive impact on our lives because being a writer and author can many times be a life of solitude. So if you happen to come for a visit here? Please leave your Blog or Site Link as well when you write what you are “Grateful For” this holiday and maybe we can meet new bloggers and friends in the process.

REVIEW NEWS of Author, A. Gavazonni and her “Steamy Hot Romance Thriller!
.

.
.
4 out of 4 stars
Review by klbradley
Behind the Door is a romance/thriller novel written by A. Gavazzoni and published in July of 2016. Although this is her first novel, Gavazzoni does not disappoint with this new sense of eroticism mixed with a thrill factor. In the start of the novel, we are introduced to Simone- a psychologist specializing in sexual behavior disorders. Simone is sought out by Carl, a New York attorney who is asking for her help. Carl explains that his client/friend is facing a murder charge from a sex game gone bad. In order to help Simone get a true feel of the relationship shared by the deceased woman, Lara, and Carl’s client, Mark, she is given a journal to read from Mark’s perspective on the relationship. While Simone is trying to focus on her work and helping Carl, she soon finds herself involved with helping another friend/colleague with information pertaining to a serial killer in town.
Behind the Door is nothing like what is usually found in erotic novels, as this is as un-cliché as it gets. From the first page, I felt pulled in as a reader. The amount of suspense that comes along with reading this novel is unlike anything I have come across so far. Throughout the novel, the sequence would take turns from being “Current day,” which is Simone’s life as she is reading, to Mark’s journal, which is full of past events about his relationship with Lara. Reading about the relationship shared by Lara and Mark was totally consuming, mainly because it was written to feel completely real, and unexaggerated. We learn why Lara has turned to sex in the way that she has, and why Mark feels drawn to her in return.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how true and realistic the legal terminology is expressed in this novel, and upon further research into the author, I discovered that she is a professor of law as well as an attorney. Often while reading stories with legal involvement, I find information to be presented as unlikely and “made for television.” This was not the case with Behind the Door. Gavazzoni shows great talent with writing thriller novels, as well as the romantic/erotic genre.
Errors in the novel were very minimal, and I feel as though they were mostly errors with my digital copy, such as an extra space between words, or a random page break. The book seemed edited well, aside from a few minor errors. There is also a need for reader discretion for this book, as the sexual content and language portrayed is for a mature audience only.
As a fan of thriller and erotic genres, it’s no surprise that this novel was able to capture and hold my attention, but I feel like it could do the same for others as well. I can easily say that it takes a lot for a novel to come across as unpredictable to me, but I can say without a doubt that Behind the Door does. Because of the constant surprise and intense interest, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book for others who enjoy a good thriller, and obviously don’t mind some rather unconventional sex.
