REVIEW FROM AMAZON

Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024
5 stars A Compelling historical fiction.

“The book is a powerful and emotional read that draws the reader into the characters’ struggles and hopes. The author does a great job of creating realistic and complex characters that are easy to relate to and care about. The book also tackles the sensitive topic of generational dysfunction, which society often ignores or misunderstands.

The book shows how trauma can be passed down from parents to children and how it can impact their mental health, relationships, and self-esteem. The author also offers a message of hope and redemption as the characters learn to overcome their past and find their own happiness.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, family drama, and social issues. The book is well-written, engaging, and thought-provoking. It is a read that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

“Breaking The Silence Receives A 5-Star Editorial Book Review Awarded By Reader’s Favorite 2024!”

Deb Morgan, the author
of the Amazon best-selling memoir “Graceful Agony: An Intimate Memoir of Living with Fibro & Chronic Fatigue,” has published a new book titled “Breaking The Silence: Confronting Guilt and Shame in the Chronic Pain World” for readers who suffer from chronic pain, and loved ones.

According to the ‘Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,’ as of 2021, approximately 20.9% of U.S. adults (51.6 million people) experienced chronic pain, and 6.9% (17.1 million people) experienced high-impact chronic pain. Along with the diagnosis of chronic pain, which is beyond one’s control, it can induce feelings of shame and guilt that most times come from stigma.

‘Breaking The Silence’ is an exceptional and easy-to-read guidebook that offers various tools and techniques to help those diagnosed with chronic pain or any chronic illness that involves pain as a symptom. Reading this book can help one navigate through chronic pain and overcome feelings of shame and guilt. It also facilitates open communication between chronic pain sufferers, their families, and friends.

“The author emphasizes throughout this book that “No one should face suffering in silence.”

5-Star Editorial Book Review by Readers’ Favorite

Reviewed by Delene Vrey for Readers’ Favorite

Breaking The Silence by Deborah Morgan is aptly sub-titled Confronting Guilt and Shame in The Chronic Pain World.
Deb, who has written her memoir about living with chronic pain, identifies that many chronic pain sufferers deal with a large amount of shame and guilt due to childhood experiences and the way society at large and family view and treat those who suffer from chronic pain. She provides thought-through techniques and advice to overcome these feelings and live a successful and fulfilling life.

Being a chronic pain sufferer herself, Deb shows insight and understanding of the difficulties faced by sufferers, be it how to cope with the emotions and feelings that can lead to isolation or how to deal with family members who minimize or negate their condition. The aim of this book is to set chronic pain sufferers free from guilt and shame and cultivate open and honest communication between those affected.

Deborah Morgan has written an easy-to-read book concerning chronic pain and how to break through the silence and stigma that chronic pain sufferers face. She has first-hand experience with the topics she addresses and the tips and advice she provides. The book is written in clear and accessible language, and repetition is helpful, especially as many who suffer from chronic pain also have difficulty concentrating.

I found the chapter about the psychology behind dismissal very helpful as I am a fibromyalgia sufferer and have had much trouble understanding the way that others reacted and still react to my diagnosis. This book can be of use to any sufferer of chronic pain as well as those who want to understand their loved one who is in constant pain.

Breaking The Silence: Confronting Guilt and Shame in The Chronic Pain World does what the title implies. It helps you learn how to love yourself and communicate your feelings to those who need to understand what a pain sufferer endures to become more supportive in a healing way. Highly recommend!

“Reviewed By K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite

Dark Secrets of the Bayou is a work of fiction in the murder mystery genre. It is aimed at all ages and was penned by author Kim Carter. The novel follows the homecoming of attorney Tink Mabry as she visits Kane, Louisiana with a co-worker to deal with the dilapidated homestead she’s just inherited from the family she barely knows. No sooner has she arrived, however, than she ends up as the prime suspect of multiple murder investigations. As Tink explores her new surroundings she begins to realize that the family secrets that plague her inheritance may hold the key to exonerating her, though some things are best left in the past.

Author Kim Carter has crafted a sinister and spine-tingling work of dark mystery fiction which is an ideal read for a cold winter’s night. This story really combined so many elements and genres that I adore, from the historical references to the 19th century and the creepy, dark expanses of the Louisiana bayous, through to chilling, horror, and family drama elements.

The complex plot interweaves all of these factors seamlessly, delivering a smoothly-told narrative with sharp, exciting deviations in the mystery plot. It certainly kept me guessing until the end, and the close narration of Tink and her emotional journey really got me rooting for her (and fearing for her) as the story developed. Overall, I would highly recommend Dark Secrets of the Bayou for those who enjoy a dark mystery with lots of horror elements and a spellbinding atmosphere. This was a worthy introduction to an author worth reading again and again.”

Early Reviews and Editorials:

“Two crafty septuagenarian widow’s turned private investigators; a crabby Atlanta cop recovering from a gunshot wound, and a cunning killer who dumps his victims rather appropriately in cemeteries. Those are just a few of the zesty ingredients in Murder among the Tombstones, the latest whodunit by Georgia-based mystery writer Kim Carter. It’s a fast-paced, twister of a mystery that keeps you turning pages until the very end.

.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

When Andy’s redundancy money clears in the bank, and with middle age fast approaching, the only realistic course of action is to wave goodbye to the UK and start again. A one-way ticket to China, please! This is one man’s light-hearted three-year account of his numerous attempts and failures of settling down and creating a new life in a different culture.

Wanted: A traditional house with sliding screens and curved roofing in quiet Eastern suburbia. Single guy avoiding mid-life crisis seeks gorgeous thirty-something Chinese girl to live with forever in perfect bliss and harmony. Instead, with the influence of tourism and modernization, any romantic preconceptions of how things should be like in the East quickly go out of the window.

With zero Chinese speaking ability and minimal planning, Andy’s story starts with a disastrous online romance played out in South China and his great escape. From the first Chinese haircut to encountering the most fearsome waitress in China, to Chengdu and its Famous Napalm-like hot pot, the journey winds its way from Tibet into Yunnan via one of the most dangerous bus journeys in the world. Across borders, he foolishly goes ghost hunting in Cambodia and to the DMZ’s ‘no man’s land’ in South Korea. We also take a visit to the eagle hunters of Western Mongolia and the Russian border where Andy manages a Mongolian holiday camp.

These are just some of the many dynamite stories, anecdotes, and descriptions written in Andy’s streetwise style that will make you choke on your breakfast.

“THE BOOK TRAIL INTERVIEW

Talking books with Andy Smart…

Andy Smart is the author of Just Turn Left At The Mountain – a very personal, poignant and very witty tour of China and Asia. Andy lives and works as a teacher in China and on Chinese New Year plans to be giving some books to his friends.

I’ve just returned from a 10,000-mile solo drive across China, east to west. It took me months so despite downloading some new reads onto my Kindle, have been really out of touch with reading.

Right now I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things.

Before my trip, I read an amazing book called Midnight in Peking by Paul French. I normally support indie authors but as it was recommended to me by a Chinese colleague I thought I’d give it a go. This is the true story of a teenage girl called Pamela Werner in Beijing just before the takeover by the Japanese in WW2 and his attempt at finding the real truth of her unsolved murder.

It’s easy to see why it’s a best-seller as Paul French writes on many levels pulling the reader’s attention right into the center of the story. Indeed it was one of those books I got through in a few days. I think what’s most impressive is the writer’s ability to paint such a vivid picture of what it was like in Beijing back then. Being that I live and work here, I often go past the places referred to in the book. There’s actually a tour you can take which visits some of the areas relevant to the story. I loved Paul French’s attention to detail. The book is the result of years of tireless work in coming to his conclusions about the murder and just shows us what research you really need to do to write convincingly.

Sharing books with Chinese colleagues

I actually just gave a Chinese colleague A Short History of Just About Everything by Bill Bryson as it shows the crazy side of Western history. Like Midnight in Peking, you can tell that it’s another labor of love with years of research before the book was written.

I am particularly interested in real-life tales of overcoming hardship. Recently I discovered Addicted to Dimes, (Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat) by Author, Catherine Townsend-Lyon. This is the true story of someone’s gambling addiction and recovery. Actually, I fancy reading it now, Ha Ha. Just a fascinating read really.

A novel which has made an impression

Definitely, “Vote for Murder” by Jaqueline Beard. Based on a true story, this is the tale of one of the author’s relatives and how they became involved in a tale of a woman who was wrongly executed for a murder they didn’t commit. I met Jaqueline online as she lives in the same area that I grew up in and got chatting. Once again, I especially enjoyed her professional attention to detail and well thought out and research.

My Favorite story as a child?

Actually not the typical story as you would expect. My father could remember London in the Second World War and my grandparents were ground keepers to a Canadian airfield around that time. On my Mum’s side, her dad survived the Somme by a whisker having being rescued by his friends from no man’s land during the cover of darkness. During this time, the soldiers from France, the UK and Germany met in the middle for an unofficial cease-fire and spent Christmas together exchanging gifts and some even playing football together. I often wonder what it must have been like for the soldiers and what my Granddad was doing at that moment in 1914. To me, this is one of the ultimate stories.
