Interview

Where have you spent most of your childhood?

Most of my childhood was spent growing up in Miami. Back then, it wasn’t crowded, and I loved it. My memories are such that while our house had no central air, I don’t remember it being hot. But that was likely because I was always swimming in the water somewhere – pool or beach.

Why do you think there is such power in words and literature? When did you first discover this power?

From an early age, once I learned how to read, books affected me. Stories had the power to transport me to places I had never been and teach me things from many perspectives. History and nonfiction were all part of my education, but fiction appealed to my imagination. I loved the power of fiction for this reason. There were no boundaries in this literature … each story was unique, and they were fuel for my own active thoughts.

Have you always been a big reader?

Yes. As a young person, I read nearly everything I could get my hands on. There was no internet, so it was ALL about books. And music.

I felt like a changeling in my family. My parents were religious, and they wanted me to be like them, the polar opposite of me. They were completely devoid of any imagination. But I couldn’t be like them. They were horrified I wanted to be a writer and a composer. They were sick of me being a bookworm and wanted me to be more social in the church. I struggled with this.

My peers couldn’t talk literature with me; they had read nothing of what I had read. It was difficult for me to find a social common ground because I had no interest in what interested them … mainly church, cosmetics, boys, and gossip.

Looking back, I can see how I could have been considered aloof and headstrong. But I was living in my own world, and I was content with that. At the age of 13, two things changed for me: 1) I began to write my first fiction novel, and 2) I was finally allowed to travel abroad on my own. My parents were oddly broad-minded about this. But for me, both opened massive new worlds, and I was thrilled to dive into them.

What is your favorite way to escape from the present and relax (besides reading or writing)?

I have many loves. My family and I are extremely close. My wonderful husband and I have two daughters, both successful and brilliant creatives. I enjoy hanging out with them, often grilling some great dinner by the pool. I also enjoy composing. I call it movie soundtrack music. If I ever get Larry Martin’s theme properly recorded, I will add it to my website.

In the past, I have also enjoyed working with some of the Atlanta Chamber Choir and the Atlanta Symphony in a studio recording of a classical thirteen-movement tone poem, The Bride of Kaslin Burke. A tone poem is a symphonic work that tells a story.

During this time of composing and recording, I was writing my second novel, Hepplewhite. I came close to publishing when I was knocked over by the idea of The Other Shoes of Larry Martin.

I don’t worry that I’ve done nothing with either Burke or Hepplewhite. Both projects are finished and can be dusted off when I am ready for them.

In sum, music and family are my favorite ways to relax and escape from the present.

What inspired the story of “The Other Shoes of Larry Martin” series?

Larry began with a kernel of an idea: A homeless guy finds happiness for a night by creating a small structure in which he can read and eat while staying dry and warm from the rain storming outside.

I thought it would be a quick and easy short story to write. I was wrong.

Once I began writing, the story grew to immense proportions. The Other Shoes of Larry Martin is a fictional contemporary political drama. It has become a seven-book saga of one long story.

While the story is character-driven by Larry, it encompasses current progressive anti-Trump politics and social nuances covering men’s tears, toxic masculinity, loneliness and insecurity, bullying, the building of strong platonic relationships of men, white supremacy, and more. None of this is instructional. These nuances are simply part of the story. Readers, themselves, will decide what they think on these issues.

In Book One, Revelation of Lies, Larry begins as a despicable person working for an extreme alt-right website as a journalist. His columns denigrate the poor and the homeless. When he becomes homeless himself, he realizes that everything he believes is a lie. He works to change. He opens his mind and becomes metaphysical in his higher learning. After he embraces kindness as a power and after he survives his homeless ordeal, what happens to him next is extraordinary.

I have only published Books One and recently Book Two. I have decided to finish the series before I publish more. I am in the middle of Book 6 now. After I finish Book 7, I can fire my publishing salvos.

For me, this is just a huge project. But I have learned that 1) trying to publish while 3)) working with my editor on other books and 3) still trying to write to push the story forward … is all too much for me.

However, Books One and Two are now available to start this series. It can be purchased through my website, pavaneravel.com (which I prefer), or on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and anywhere else, like Target or Walmart. Larry has a 5-star editorial review from Reader’s Favorite for Book 2 and many 5-star Amazon reviews for both.

In what ways did you try to lift this book up and make it different from other books of its genre?

You’d think this would be easy, right? Except it’s not. I knew I was writing for and leaning toward progressives, liberals, independents, and democrats … but when my editor and I began researching comparable books, there were none.

There are simply no progressive heroes in current literature. Progressive heroes like Captain America or Superman don’t count.

When my editor told me that he’d never read anything like Larry Martin, I understood. When a Barnes & Noble reviewer wrote, “I read a lot, but I have never read a story like Larry Martin,” I understood. When an Amazon review wrote, “Although fictitious, Pavane develops a character that symbolizes hope for humanity,” I was blown away.

While I was writing Book One, I lived in fear because I didn’t know what I was doing. Somewhere along the line, I chucked the fear and let Larry show me who he was and what he wanted to do. That’s all I did to lift this book up and be what it was. It was all I could do. And now, I let my reviews speak for themselves.

As a writer, how do you come up with and commit to ideas? How do you get in touch with your characters?

When writing, I watch a literal movie in my mind. I transcribe as I watch. I do not try to control my characters. I have learned to let them live their lives and direct me. By doing this, they show me things I never would have thought of. They constantly surprise me. So, it’s not so much that I come up with and commit to ideas. It’s more that I am shown what those ideas are … and this keeps me firmly in touch with my characters on a visceral level. They are real to me. I feel them and hear them. But as an author, I don’t think I am unique in this way.

What has been the most memorable experience of being an author?

Being an author is all I’ve ever wanted to do. I am gratified that I have finally arrived at the right time in life to fulfill my lifelong dream.

But I had no idea how difficult it would be.

As far as my Larry Martin novels go, they have gotten too big for me. I am not sure I am qualified to write them. My editor scoffs, saying I say that about every book. But I don’t know. Right now, I feel out of my league. These last two books will be the hardest thing I’ve ever written, especially the finale of Book Seven.

What’s most memorable for me about being an author is tamping down fear and dread. I don’t suppose I will ever get cocky about my writing. Still. It’s what I want to do, so I will go on with determination and confidence. I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this way.

What does your life as a writer look like?

I am lucky. I have the support of my family. They are my biggest fans.

As for my life, I tend to rise at about 5:00 in the morning when my eyes open. I make coffee and watch the sun come up while sitting on my deck, thinking about the current scene I am writing. I often watch the movie in my mind.

When I am not in Manhattan, I go to my cottage in the North Georgia foothills. There, I have a big sunroom. This is my home office. It overlooks a forest. And this is where I do most of my writing.

My life is full of family and friends who love me. Sometimes, they struggle with my writing process because when I am writing, I shut everyone out so I can make serious progress. They respect and understand this, but they don’t necessarily like it.

While I try to balance everyone and everything, I do not always succeed. In sum, my life as a writer is a constant balancing act between my responsibilities and doing what I need to do to keep my family happy.

Are novels dying? If a current college student dreams of being a writer one day, should they focus more on visual media like TV, movies, web videos, etc., because no one will read novels in the future?

This is a difficult one because technology is always changing. Social media is always expanding. The Metaverse is right around the corner, and its impact on reality will be interesting, if not questionable.

I want to believe that novels will always be relevant. If not, how do we tell our stories? How does anyone produce a movie fiction drama or screenplay on YouTube without a written, edited story?

Yes, writers should be savvy to current media. However, nothing is producible without a story. That story must be written. So, I am going to say that novels are here to stay for now, even if on tablets, phones, or computers. Regardless of how one reads a book, it is still a book.

What are some of the most profound “shower thoughts” you’ve had?

A shower can be a personal time of water, soap, and cleansing. For me, like many, I sometimes contemplate my problems here. I rarely write. Mostly, I hear the current music I’m composing. Sometimes, I can even figure out a section that has me stymied. I don’t know if any of this is profound. To me, it’s just me being me.

How do you maintain that equilibrium between writing what you want and what your readers want?

I don’t. I am somewhat new in my career. When I wrote my first novel, I wrote it for myself and put it in a drawer. It will never be published. But this book helped me to learn what it took to write a novel.

When I wrote my second book, Hepplewhite, I knew it was for young adults and, thus, for everyone. I do intend to publish this novel one day. But the Larry Martin series was a whole new experience. I realized it was controversial. I had a story to tell, and I couldn’t worry about readers (what they might think or want.) If I had, I would have felt too intimidated to continue. I simply decided whether readers would like it or not. I am well aware there is no pleasing everyone.

Storytelling is just that. It’s very different than, let’s say, marketing or writing for a particular industry demographic targeting a specific readership. Perhaps some novel writers do target a specific readership. A book on writing, for example, would target new writers. That makes sense.

But, for me, I just have stories to tell. There is no equilibrium between what I want to write and what my readers want. At least not yet … and maybe never. I don’t know. But I do know that I like having a writing plan for the future. . . .

WELCOME JOE SICCARDI AUTHOR OF: “WISDOM FROM A FATHER” And His New Book Just Released: “My Name Is Sam”… 1Rad Reader Reviews.

….

INTERVIEW ~ Rad-Reader:  I saw that you wrote your book from your blog.  Any reason you chose the year 2012?

Joe:  That’s when I started blogging, figured I would start at the beginning.

Rad-Reader:  When you first start writing or posting on your blog.  Did you ever think it would take you to publish a book?

Joe: No! Never! I’m just so appreciative people seem to enjoy the little stories about life.

Rad-Reader:  Did you find your posting/writing helped you as you were writing or as you went back to see what you wrote for the day?

Joe:  I went back and updated the information, making sure I noted the circumstances at the time.

Rad-Reader:  Were your thoughts done in the morning or just whenever you thought to sit down that day to post?

Joe:  I wish I could say I was a disciplined writer, but I’m not. Some were written in the morning, but more in the afternoon or evening after my workday “inspiration.”

Rad-Reader:  How did you come up with the catchphrase: Thought to Remember?

Joe:  It just evolved. I wanted to share some positive message with each post, so I started collecting them as I went along. By far, those little add-ons are the most popular part of the book and the blog.

Rad-Reader:  Did you have an idea that you would touch on so many topics when you first wrote your “Thought to Remember”?

Joe:  No. I just wanted to add something positive to each post, even if the post itself wasn’t.

Rad-Reader:  The few entries that you had that dealt with music: “Beer with Jesus” – “The Wonder” by Dion – That whole section about Dion was something I did not know. (Though I did know the song & “The Day the Music Died” – I don’t know what we were to get from that, but I got redemption?

Joe:  I  can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but I do appreciate good music. It’s part of my life. Good music — whatever genre — evokes an emotion. Dion’s story was a story of redemption. A lot of country music is also about redemption or at least pointing to redemption. The entire book is really my journey of blessing, grace, and redemption. Music is part of that.

Rad-Reader:  Was it your idea to put the last one in about the expiration dates with food?  Side note:  I thought the same thing.  My wife and daughter keep telling me, NO!

Joe:  I drive my kids crazy. I guess you could say I’m a hoarder so I ended up collecting food — especially spices — for recipes, using just a teaspoon or so and just adding the remaining container to my collection. I just don’t take life too seriously. As long as it doesn’t smell rancid or have little green fuzz growing, I’m good. Maybe it’s a guy thing.

Rad-Reader:  What does your family think about your daily writings becoming public?

Joe:  They’re generally supportive. Although they may be the focus of a particular story, they know I  would not publicly embarrass them. I love them bunches.

Rad-Reader:  Do you encourage them to do the same in order to get some peace or clarity during difficult times?

Joe:  I do. My oldest daughter actually set up my blog because I was procrastinating. She currently blogs and is in the process of writing her own book.

Rad-Reader: You have five children, 18 grandchildren, and three great-granddaughters. Do you get to see them much?

Joe: Not nearly enough. I’m actually expecting great-granddaughter #4 in the fall. We try to get together at least once a year, although we’ve missed the past few years. December 2017 was spent with me on the road visiting each of them and their families in New York, Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Massachusetts, with side stops in Indiana, Florida, and New Jersey to visit with friends and other relatives.

The kids weren’t particularly happy with my decision to retire to Maine so I was instructed to Messenger them every day to let them know I was fine. I guess they thought I couldn’t take care of myself by myself. We stay connected throughout the day with Messenger so we stay pretty close and try to help each other out through any “calamities” of the day … even if it’s a simple “I love you!”

Rad-Reader:  What is your next project and when is it coming out?

Joe:  I’m really excited. In March 2018 I published a novella — Heaven Shining Through — based on a “community” writing project that ended up being a community of one. It was met well, but often with the comment, “It should have been a novel.” So I started writing a novel based on the novella, “My Name Is Sam … and Heaven Is Still Shining Through.”  It is available at Amazon. The actual release date was June 30, 2019, and a Facebook Live book launch was July 2  and archived on my Facebook author page, @wisdomfromafather

About Author and Show Host Maxwell Ivy Jr.

“While Max may not be able to see with his eyes, he opens the eyes of everyone around him. ”  ~ ‘Super Joe Pardo Show”

Hello; My name is Maxwell Ivey, Max to my friends; and that is what I hope we will become.

.

Photo 1
.

I am a 49-year-old  blind gentleman who grew up in a family of carnival owners. All I ever wanted to do was to continue in my father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and be part of the family business.

As you can tell by reading this, that isn’t where I ended up. I did help in the business over the years, but couldn’t sustain it after the early death of my father (who had lung cancer). I then turned to helping people sell their amusement equipment. I do that on my other site, The Midway Marketplace.

I started blogging to promote that site and met a lot of wonderful people in the blogosphere. They told me that I had an amazing story and many commented on how I inspired them. They finally convinced me that I had a bigger purpose in store for myself.

So, I started this second blog, and in it I share more of my personal journey, struggles, and triumphs. I also got noticed by a lot of people and have appeared as a guest, an interview subject, and a motivator on many different sites. My As Seen Online page lists these places.

I do my best to help others and do so mostly by encouraging them to take steps towards their ultimate goal or to continue on the path they have started. I am now offering coaching to help people who are stuck and frustrated with not being able to find their passion or follow their dreams once they have determined what they want in their lives.

I am also available to speak to groups. I believe that by sharing the story of my personal growth and transformation, it will motivate and inspire anyone who hears it. In addition to starting a new business, I have also lost over 250 pounds through a combination of gastric surgery, diet, exercise, positive attitude, meditation, and prayer.

I believe I can help you. If you have questions for me, just ask them via the contact form. If anything, I am known for being too forthcoming!

I want to get to know you and become friends. I want to hear about your dreams and aspirations as well as your fears and concerns. I want to help you to grow to be that person you were meant to be.

I look forward to speaking with you. Let’s talk soon.  Thanks and take care out there.

I Will See You and Help You

Because I listen with my heart, I will see all of you. I will see those hidden abilities, possibilities, and opportunities.

I will see the roadblocks you put up between you and success. I will show you the lies that you tell yourself. I will correct those lies that the world has told you.

Why Me?

Because I have already done this in my own life.

When my father’s death resulted in the closure of our family’s small traveling carnival, I had to figure out what to do next.

I started by doing the only thing I thought I knew how to do. I helped other people sell their surplus amusement equipment.

Every day brought a new challenge. I had to learn so much. The amazing thing was that every time I accomplished something new, it gave me the confidence to believe that I could do even bigger things.

Since then, I have come so far and still have much farther I want to go.

My Accomplishments

I went from a morbidly obese, failed carnival owner to respected amusement equipment broker in the best health of my life.

I went from a frightened radio show guest to being a prolific online media guest to hosting my own podcast called the What’s Your Excuse Show.

I went from writing my first book on a dare to competing for and winning the Amtrak prestigious Writers In Residence Award. I’m now working on my fourth self-help book.

Are You Ready?

If you are ready to finally accomplish those big goals and dreams, then what are you waiting for?

If you want someone who has been there and done that… and who will see through your bullshit, and challenge you, then who else could you get that would be better than me?

More About My Friend Whitney:

RECOVERY IN THE BIBLE

Whitney McKendree Moore says she writes “campfire stories.” Her books are for any Christian discouraged by a loved one’s alcoholism, especially for those who may not realize that help is available. Twelve-Step recovery led Whitney to discover that a relationship with God can be interactive, up close, and personal. She writes to tell of God’s incredible help in her life three ways:

Divine Intervention: “Whit’s End” is her personal testimony of how God revealed denial and delivered her from it into a whole new life.

Direct Connect: “Downloads from God” and “Contemporary Psalms” are companion volumes — excerpts of what it sounds like to be in Quiet Time with the Maker of the Universe.

Divine Connections: “BS-Busters” and “Praise in the Storm” are books of encouragement, urging gatherings where it is safe to “get real” with God, with ourselves, and with each other. Two other titles (“God Can!” and “What the Conductor Said”) offer additional “campfire stories” of God speaking, even through each of us, to one another.

Whitney writes to come alongside other Christians who, like her, have reached the point of saying, “I can’t; God can; I need to let Him.” She has a website called RecoveryintheBible.com and a blog there called The Question Corner.

“Cozy Author Interview With ~ Author, Whitney McKendree Moore”

1. When did realize that you wanted to be a writer and author?
Ever since ever! I remember seeing a TV ad for coffee when I was a girl (in the late 50s) where a woman was typing in front of a roaring fire with a dog at her side. I always thought that was a picture of me.

2. How long does it take for you to write one of your books? It took me a decade to write “Whit’s End.” At one point, the manuscript was 420 pages. Now it’s 112. For me, it was tricky trying to tell my story without doing so at someone else’s expense.

3. How do you balance your work schedule when you’re busy writing?  I am retired now, but when I worked, I spent many nights and weekends and even vacation days writing. I guess it’s true that if you’re a writer you write!

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?  I am very colloquial, and I actually seek to sound as though I am talking. Also, I make up words. A lot.

5. How do you come up with ideas for your books?  I just decided to package up all those pages I’d been writing on nights and weekends!

6. When did you write your first book? 1986. It was called “Where To Next?” and is out of print now.

7. What are your hobbies when you’re not writing? Walking, singing with guitar and others, playing the piano.

8. How do your family and close friends think of your writing? One relative said, “We loved the cover.” And not a peep else!

.

9. What was one of the most interesting things that you learned about yourself when you published your first book?  How reluctant I was to market it myself. I no longer consider “marketing” a swear word. Now I think of it as reaching out to encourage someone with what I have been given to share.

10. How many books have you written? Which one is your favorite?  Twelve books of my own, plus another five helping other people tell their stories.

11. What do you think makes a good story?  The truth, which is so often stranger than fiction. When I wrote for magazines, I would describe my subjects as “extraordinary & ordinary people.”

12. Now lastly, where do you like to kick back and write your books?  My favorite is to take a thick stack of blank white paper to my great big bed with a bunch of sharp pencils and start there. It never goes well for me if I get onto the computer too soon…

I’d like to close by saying “You are amazing, woman. Amazing. Thank you so much for your incredible generosity, interview and ‘CAN DO attitude.” You give me GRATITUDE! Friends and Readers can come connect with me on social media below!  Visit my  Website    GoodReads   Twitter

Cat Welcomes Author, Dr. Mette Mouritsen to The Reading Den and Her New Book ~ “MindFul Medicine.”

Hello, and Welcome Readers, Friends, and all New Visitors…

mindful1

It seems as of late, I have been hired by many authors abroad in different countries to help them with sharing and promoting their books here in the USA. And my dear friend Mette Mouritsen is no different. She lives and works in Denmark. And yes, she is my first client from Denmark. I have had the pleasure to help promote books live in the UK, The Seychelles, Brazil, Scottland, and Thailand, other than here in the US.

It has been a blessing and honor to do so as they all are fantastic writers and authors! Mette has written and published several more books, but her new book is being sold on both Amazon and Balboa Press Books titled; Mindful Medicine: An Inspirational Book on Awakening and Conscious Health.

ABOUT HER NEW BOOK:

In Mindful Medicine, author, physician, and psychotherapist Mette Mouritsen shares her own story of spiritual awakening in order to provide a holistic understanding of the body together with a practical approach. It is primarily based on her own experiences and stories, and it represents a paradigm shift in thinking about the human as a coherent energetic body in a coherent energetic system; it shows instead how symptoms are messages to be understood and not necessarily enemies that must be removed, and it is Mouritsen’s hope that we can transform difficult and common human emotions when we are sick into life-affirming messages that promote our health and well-being.

Editorial Reviews:

“Raw honesty and empathy are consistently on display in the case stories … a very professionally presented, mindful approach to healing that will give guidance and hope to readers.”
~Helle Brisson, MA

“Rather than looking at another person through a learned medical, psychological, and mostly fixed lens, she invites us to stand right at the edge—to explore the other person’s psychological and physiological landscape as totally unknown ground, as deeply unique, in attempt to find meaning and to support what might be called for in the symptom of pain and suffering. Touching and being touched by many hearts, Mette guides us in consciousness. What a gift!”
~Ameyo Katharina Barfred-Dixon, Integrative Transpersonal Psychotherapist, Trainer and Supervisor in Denmark, Sweden, and England.

####

So I asked Mette to answer a few questions for us so we can learn more about WHO she is and about being an author and writer in helping many find answers within a more healthy and holistic approach and away from conventional medicine. Our bodies are amazing healing benefactors and Mette has learned by herself just how amazing our bodies heal as she shares this with us in her new book! I am half done reading it myself and can tell you it has been eye-opening and informative thus far.

What I know about Mette Mouritsen is she a physician, psychotherapist, and mindfulness instructor, and she uses her comprehensive skills in an integrative way to heal her patients. Since her spiritual awakening in 2010, she started to write and is now the author of six books and now her new release. She also lectures and features workshops for others so you can book her for workshops as well by Email her below Contact mindful.medicin@gmail.com  for booking.

Here is more about her and my interview with her which will also be featured on ilikeebooks.com!

Interview With Dr. Mette Mouritsen, Author

1. When did realize that you wanted to be an author?
I did not see myself as an author until recently. I just had a great urge to write after my sudden shift in consciousness, and it seemed very natural to write and share my knowledge. My first book was meant as an urgent support for the psychiatric patients  I had met on the psychiatric ward in order to make the professional caretakers aware of how it was to be a patient. The following books came one after the other inspired by my  continuously work as a doctor and my new perspective on diseases.

2. How long does it take for you to write one of your books?
One of the books was written in two weeks, I was very inspired.  After writing it I spend months on
modifying the sentences in order to make the messages as clear as possible.  I have written and publishing  one book every  year. One year I did two books.
3. How do you balance your work schedule when you’re busy writing?
Since I started writing more  regularly I have  changed job position, from having daily work on my own clinic to a work as a doctor on duty where it is more easy to schedule my time and to work less, just what is needed for daily living.
When I am busy writing I forget time.  My stomach calls for brakes and of course my family and other important things. I can wake up very early in the morning and start writing.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I play with the original meaning of the words, which may changes the perspective of the topic to the reader. Also I often understand a topic from different perspectives and I am able to present these different perspective  to the reader to open their eyes for other ways of
thinking.

5. How do you come up with ideas for your books?

I get inspired by listening to patients and people I meet. Also I get inspired when sitting in silence every morning and when walking in silence in nature. Sometimes I get an idea and then it just flows from my hands very easy. Other times I get an idea and  write someting and  walk away and return and continue or changes some of it.

6. When did you write your first book? In 2012
7. What are your hobbies when you’re not writing?
Walking and running and staying in nature. Travelling, Meeting  friends, dancing, photographing.

8. What do your family and close friends think of your writing?
My children don’t see me as an author, they still see me as a mom and doctor.  My old mom at 86
years is the only one that comments on my books, she likes them and says I am good at writing. She asks why I don’t write romans and Novels, since this is what she usually reads, and she reads a lot.

9. What was one of the most interesting things that you learned about yourself when you published your first book?
The way I had lost my self  through my way of living and working.  How much I loved my family and how difficult it was for me to express it by words.

10. How many books have you written? Which one is your favorite?
I have written six books in Danish, three of them I have translated into English so in fact it is 9 books.  My latest book “ Mindful Medicine” is my
favourite.

11. What do you think makes a good story?
Well it depends on the type of book. I like fantasy books like Harry Potter but I also like  poetry and authenticity. I like when I sense the passion behind the words.

12. Where do you like to kick back and write your books?
In silence in nature or  sitting by a window being able to look out into the sky, the see or  trees in nature.  Also I get inspired by sitting quietly listening to other people, but I can’t write  when staying together with other people, I may make some notes though.

Guest Author Interview Courtesy of “The Book Trail” ~ Talking Books in China with Author, Andy Smart…

I always enjoy sharing other Book Bloggers when they have fantastic author spotlights of my books I have read and about “Author Friends” of mine. My buddy Author, Andy Smart lives in China and has a fabulous book out about his moving there and much of his travels through the country that I think readers will find a great read and fascinating! He shared a new interview he had done, so I wanted to share with my readers and visitors to learn more about my friend and his wonderful book!  :-)

.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

When Andy’s redundancy money clears in the bank, and with middle age fast approaching, the only realistic course of action is to wave goodbye to the UK and start again. A one-way ticket to China, please! This is one man’s light-hearted three-year account of his numerous attempts and failures of settling down and creating a new life in a different culture.

Wanted: A traditional house with sliding screens and curved roofing in quiet Eastern suburbia. Single guy avoiding mid-life crisis seeks gorgeous thirty-something Chinese girl to live with forever in perfect bliss and harmony. Instead, with the influence of tourism and modernization, any romantic preconceptions of how things should be like in the East quickly go out of the window.

With zero Chinese speaking ability and minimal planning, Andy’s story starts with a disastrous online romance played out in South China and his great escape. From the first Chinese haircut to encountering the most fearsome waitress in China, to Chengdu and its Famous Napalm-like hot pot, the journey winds its way from Tibet into Yunnan via one of the most dangerous bus journeys in the world. Across borders, he foolishly goes ghost hunting in Cambodia and to the DMZ’s ‘no man’s land’ in South Korea. We also take a visit to the eagle hunters of Western Mongolia and the Russian border where Andy manages a Mongolian holiday camp.

These are just some of the many dynamite stories, anecdotes, and descriptions written in Andy’s streetwise style that will make you choke on your breakfast.

“THE BOOK TRAIL INTERVIEW

Talking books with Andy Smart…

Andy Smart is the author of Just Turn Left At The Mountain – a very personal, poignant and very witty tour of China and Asia. Andy lives and works as a teacher in China and on Chinese New Year plans to be giving some books to his friends.

I’ve just returned from a 10,000-mile solo drive across China, east to west. It took me months so despite downloading some new reads onto my Kindle, have been really out of touch with reading.

Right now I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things.

Before my trip, I read an amazing book called Midnight in Peking by Paul French. I normally support indie authors but as it was recommended to me by a Chinese colleague I thought I’d give it a go. This is the true story of a teenage girl called Pamela Werner in Beijing just before the takeover by the Japanese in WW2 and his attempt at finding the real truth of her unsolved murder.

It’s easy to see why it’s a best-seller as Paul French writes on many levels pulling the reader’s attention right into the center of the story. Indeed it was one of those books I got through in a few days. I think what’s most impressive is the writer’s ability to paint such a vivid picture of what it was like in Beijing back then. Being that I live and work here, I often go past the places referred to in the book. There’s actually a tour you can take which visits some of the areas relevant to the story. I loved Paul French’s attention to detail. The book is the result of years of tireless work in coming to his conclusions about the murder and just shows us what research you really need to do to write convincingly.

Sharing books with Chinese colleagues

I actually just gave a Chinese colleague A Short History of Just About Everything by Bill Bryson as it shows the crazy side of Western history. Like Midnight in Peking, you can tell that it’s another labor of love with years of research before the book was written.

I am particularly interested in real-life tales of overcoming hardship. Recently I discovered Addicted to Dimes, (Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat) by Author, Catherine Townsend-Lyon. This is the true story of someone’s gambling addiction and recovery. Actually, I fancy reading it now, Ha Ha. Just a fascinating read really.

A novel which has made an impression

Definitely, “Vote for Murder” by Jaqueline Beard. Based on a true story, this is the tale of one of the author’s relatives and how they became involved in a tale of a woman who was wrongly executed for a murder they didn’t commit. I met Jaqueline online as she lives in the same area that I grew up in and got chatting. Once again, I especially enjoyed her professional attention to detail and well thought out and research.

My Favorite story as a child?

Actually not the typical story as you would expect. My father could remember London in the Second World War and my grandparents were ground keepers to a Canadian airfield around that time. On my Mum’s side, her dad survived the Somme by a whisker having being rescued by his friends from no man’s land during the cover of darkness. During this time, the soldiers from France, the UK and Germany met in the middle for an unofficial cease-fire and spent Christmas together exchanging gifts and some even playing football together. I often wonder what it must have been like for the soldiers and what my Granddad was doing at that moment in 1914. To me, this is one of the ultimate stories.
