About The Author:

Kim Carter is an award-winning author of suspense, mystery and thriller novels.

She was a finalist for the 2018 Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award and a recipient of the 2017 TCK Publishers’ Readers’ Choice Award for her book; Murder Among The Tombstones.’ This is the first book in her Clara and Iris Mystery series. The characters in this series are a couple of overly curious widows who become private investigators. These funny women were inspired by Kim’s mother and her mom’s best friend. She is also a recipient of a Gold Finalist – Book Excellence Award for her book; ‘And Forecast Called For Rain.’

Her other titles include Sweet Dreams, Baby Belle, When Dawn Never Comes, Deadly Odds, No Second Chances, and her latest, And The Forecast Called For Rain.

Kim’s writing career started after she suffered an illness that made her housebound for a couple of years. An avid reader of mystery novels herself, she embarked on writing as a means of filling her time. She began to share those early writings with friends and family who encouraged her to pursue writing professionally. Her health struggles and successes have been chronicled on The Lifetime Television in early 2000, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Women’s Day Magazine, and Guidepost.

Prior to her illness, Kim worked in many different capacities in county government as her “Day Job,” but ultimately, it was her job as a correctional officer that provided her the opportunities to talk and interact with a diverse group of people. Her experiences ran the gamete of inspiring success stories to tragic endings, much like her mysteries.

She self-published her first book No Second Chances. One of the guest speakers at the launch party she had at the Performing Arts Center in Newnan, Georgia included her close friend retired Atlanta Police Chief Eldrin Bell. This connection would become helpful as she started doing more research for other books, this time working with a small publishing house.

Kim began networking and made connections with numerous homicide detectives, medical examiners, and prison officials. Her research has taken her many places including morgues, death row, and the occasional midnight visit to cemeteries.

Kim is a college graduate of Saint Leo University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She and her husband have three successful grown children and reside just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

They came back to get me and found my sleeping in the hay with the baby goats!”

About Nothing Any Good

Nothing Any Good is a community. Indie publishing is difficult. A love of writing does not mean we will see our work published, nor does it mean we will find our readership. Not in the least.

This site offers advice for writers and recommendations for readers. The site aims to help make sense of the difficult world that is indie publishing. It supports indie authors. It provides compelling content in the form of essays and stories provided by a variety of sources.

In an homage to the most famous writer from my home state of Minnesota, F. Scott Fitzgerald, (with all apologies to poetic songwriter Bob Dylan), “Nothing any good isn’t hard.” This is a difficult path we have as indie writers. I hope I can help.

“Always Remember: Good writing doesn’t come the first time you sit down.”

In short:
1. Don’t worry about whether you have anything important to say. If you are inspired, say it.
2. Write often. You won’t become a good writer unless you’re regularly finding time to write.

Please feel free to Contact Me with any thoughts, questions, or requests. I want to hear from you! Dan Buri, Author

Promote your book outside the bookstore ~ BY ETHAN GILSDORF

attention from a reader

When it comes to promoting your book, you need to think beyond the ordinary book store reading.

Really, you should think beyond the traditional book tour. Your goal is to get your book into the hands of as many potential readers as you can. But people don’t find out about books only on the bookstore shelves anymore. There’s the Internet, and blogs, and subcultures, and niche groups, all to tap into. It’s a whole new world out there. So take advantage of it.

These are all things you can do yourself. You don’t need a publicist or a publisher’s PR person to open doors for you. Get on the phone, send out some emails, press the flesh, and get your promotional campaign rolling.

Think outside the bookstore. Bookstore readings are fun. But if you can appear at more targeted organizations related to your book, all the better. If your novel is about World War II, then send out an email blast to related book groups, Meet Ups, organizations and their various and associated conferences and hoedowns that specialize in that time period. If your book is about kids with allergies, find specialty shops, natural food stores, and parents’ groups where you can appear.

Go back to school. I’ve had a lot of success appearing at high schools, colleges, libraries, teen centers, youth groups, writing centers, and adult education centers. I offer a variety of talks – sometimes regular readings, but sometimes PowerPoint slideshows, writing workshops, “what it’s like to be a writer” Q&As, etc.

Be an expert: Any speaking engagement where you can appear as an expert in a topic related to your book is good. Same with moderating or being on a panel, or pitching yourself to local media (TV, radio, or as an op-ed contributor) to weigh in on some trending issue or news item.

Don’t just read. Book events are more fun when your event is as much a party or performance as it is a reading. Partner with musicians or fellow writers. Rent a back room of a bar, or offer prizes or discounts for anyone who attends. Ask a related local business, school program, or club what they think would attract people to your event.

Scale your presence. Sometimes you’ll be asked to speak in front of 500 souls. Sometimes your “event” is just five people sitting in a circle. Sometimes you’re given a table to sit at with a stack of your books, and you’ll need a big splashy banner, a “Meet the Author” sign, and a basket of goodies to get people to stop by.

Be prepared to present. Make preparations for the variety of appearances you’ll be wanting to make. Type up bullet-point lists of topics you want to make sure to hit during an interview or a lecture. Pack your PowerPoint with interesting images related to your memoir, novel, or idea books, and prepare a few versions: one long, one short, one for adults, one for kids. Come up with flexible plans and props for each potential situation.

Hit the Internet. For every niche topic that relates to your novel or nonfiction book — video games, Korean cooking, PTSD, New Orleans — there’s going to be leading blogs, reviews, journals, and other publications. Make sure those editors know about your book. Ask if they’d review it, or offer to write a guest post.  (A version of this article appeared at GrubStreet)

Happy Book Promoting.

Pricing Your Books. Are You Over Pricing Authors? Are You Listing in The Correct Categories?

So my friends over on Book Marketing sure knows about pricing your books so that it helps you gain sales and reviews, not over price readers from not buying. We also need to make sure we are adding our books in the correct categories when we upload them on Amazon’s Create Space and KDP for kindle e-books.

WHY?

Because your category placement also affects your Amazon rankings which can move every hour as does sales and book reviews. You can find a lot more about your listing categories and how rankings work here on Amazon Author Central

Grumpy-Cat-Funny-02

More about pricing:

Many self-published authors tend to price themselves out of sales.

This happens because:
1) You know how much time you spent to write the book, time or money spent on editing, time or money spent on the cover, time spent on learning to self-publish, plus the priceless view you have of your own work (rightfully so), all which combine to make you put a higher price tag on your book.
2) Self-published authors often aren’t making many sales, so they often price their book higher to earn more per sale since their sales are infrequent. We get that… but we’ve always been a proponent of the fact that you can sell more books with a lower price, and while you’ll earn less per book, you will make more in aggregate than you would with a higher price book. Plus, until you have more books to sell, it’s all about getting more readers so when you DO have more books, it’s much easier to sell them with a built-in reader base.

Now we have proof, with numbers directly from Amazon!

Amazon is usually pretty guarded with their stats. They don’t share much, but they recently shared some numbers regarding book sales at different price ranges.
Here is the quote relevant to book pricing:

“It’s also important to understand that e-books are highly price-elastic. This means that when the price goes up, customers buy much less. We’ve quantified the price elasticity of e-books from repeated measurements across many titles. For every copy an e-book would sell at $14.99, it would sell 1.74 copies if priced at $9.99. So, for example, if customers would buy 100,000 copies of a particular e-book at $14.99, then customers would buy 174,000 copies of that same e-book at $9.99. Total revenue at $14.99 would be $1,499,000. Total revenue at $9.99 is $1,738,000. The important thing to note here is that at the lower price, total revenue increases 16%. This is good for all the parties involved.”

This is directly from the largest marketplace in the world, who specializes in e-books. How much clearer can it get?

Sure, we would all love to sell at $14.99 or even $9.99, but that’s not the reality for the self-published author. But, you can still make good money selling at $0.99, $1.99, $2.99. Especially for the new author, with so much competition out there, you don’t want your price to be the reason people aren’t willing to give you and your books a shot.
Once you have a strong following of readers who love your books and want to buy more (you are building that mailing list right?), then, you can experiment with $3.99, $4.99, even $5.99. Many self-published authors are now able to command those prices, but they were not always able to sell their books for those prices. If you try to start at that price, for whatever reason, and you have very few reviews and hardly any fans, you’re going to continue to not sell many books, and you will earn less than you would with a lower price point.

Your goal is to reach as many readers as possible and to get them to want to buy every other book you come out with in the future. The bigger fan base you are able to build now, the easier it will be to sell books in the future with every new book you write.

Get people in the door with a lower price, build a readership, get them to fall in love with you and your books, THEN price your books higher.
Here’s to Selling More Books Authors!
