“Set Race Aside Forever” ~ Celebrating The Loss and Life of a Man Who Meant So Much To Civil Rights and Equality For All People. Dick Gregory…

“Dick Gregory believed that within a well-delivered joke lies power.”

“Dick Gregory, the pioneering black satirist who transformed cool humor into a barbed force for civil rights in the 1960s, then veered from his craft for a life devoted to protesting and fasting in the name of assorted social causes, health regimens and conspiracy theories, died Saturday in Washington. He was 84.”
~Couresty of The New York Times

“It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, DC. The family appreciates the outpouring of support and love and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time. More details will be released over the next few days”

Born Richard Claxton Gregory in St. Louis, the Midwest native married his wife, Lillian Smith, in 1959. The couple had 11 children (one of whom died in infancy). His comedy career began in the mid-1950s when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. But after being discharged two years later, Gregory would move to Chicago where he became known among a collective of the up-and-coming black comedians including Nipsey Russell and Bill Cosby.

By 1961, Gregory’s comedy caught the attention of Hugh Hefner who hired him to perform at the Chicago Playboy Club. Often using comedy as a form of social activism, Gregory was a notable voice in the civil rights and black power movements. He also ran for mayor of Chicago in 1967 and launched a presidential bid in 1968 (he ran as a write-in candidate from the Freedom and Peace Party). In 1978, Gregory joined Gloria Steinem and other feminists to lead the National ERA March for Ratification and Extension in Washington D.C.

His extensive resume includes more than a dozen books, hundreds of television appearances, and countless accolades including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which he received in 2015.  He is also noted among Comedy Central’s list of “The 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time.”

I never believed in Santa Claus because I knew no white dude would come into my neighborhood after dark.”  ~Dick Gregory

In 1998 Gregory spoke at the celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Clinton were in attendance. Not long after that, the President told Gregory’s long-time friend and PR. Consultant, Steve Jaffe, “I love Dick Gregory, he is one of the funniest people on the planet.” They spoke of how Gregory had made a comment on Dr. King’s birthday that broke everyone into laughter when he noted that the President made Speaker Newt Gingrich ride “in the back of the plane,” on an Air Force One trip overseas. In 2001, Gregory announced to the world that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of Cancer.

He refused traditional medical treatment – chemotherapy –and with the assistance of some of the finest minds in alternative medicine, put together a regimen of a variety of diet, vitamins, exercise, and modern devices not even known to the public, which ultimately resulted in his reversing the trend of the Cancer to the point where today he was 100% Cancer free. Gregory’s going public with his diagnosis has helped millions of his fans around the world to understand what Cancer specialists have been trying to explain for decades, which is that “Cancer is curable.” Gregory was honored recently at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., by a sold out house and a tribute hosted by Bill Cosby, with special tributes by Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr., Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Cicely Tyson, Mark Lane, Marion Barry and many more.

His most recent book, Callus On My Soul, (Longstreet Press, Atlanta, Ga.) which became a best-seller within weeks of publication, is an autobiography that updates his earlier autobiography (Nigger), because as Dick says, “I’ve lived long enough to need two auto biographies which is fine with me. I’m looking forward to writing the third and fourth volumes as well.”

In 2001, Gregory escaped death once again when a massive tree fell on his car in a storm in Washington D.C. crushing it completely, causing him to have to be extricated from the car by emergency crews. One witness said, “I knew the driver and his passengers had died when I saw the tree fall.” Gregory said, “I knew that God had more work for me to do when I saw the tree falling. ” He saved his own life by driving into the oncoming lanes of traffic. The word of the accident circulated the globe immediately in the media, underscoring the power, influence, and support that Gregory has earned from people of all nations.

Gregory gave the Keynote Address for Black History Month at Bryn Mawr College on February 28, 2013. His takeaway message to the students was to never accept injustice.

Once I accept injustice, I become injustice. For example, paper mills give off a terrible stench. But the people who work there don’t smell it. Remember, Dr. King was assassinated when he went to work for garbage collectors. To help them as workers to enforce their rights. They couldn’t smell the stench of the garbage all around them anymore. They were used to it. They would eat their lunch out of a brown bag sitting on the garbage truck. One day, a worker was sitting inside the back of the truck on top of the garbage, and got crushed to death because no one knew he was there

Doctor’s at George Washington Hospital refused to release Gregory for a few days causing his first-ever “State of the Union Address” to African Americans to be delayed by a month. Gregory gave the first “State Of The Union” address live on the Internet from Los Angeles on April 21st. Now the Internet address is the latest offering on a 3 CD set. Update on our Co-writing Journey. What Personal Info is Too Much Sharing When Writing Your Life Story in a Memoir and Legacy?

Hello and Welcome Readers, Friends, and Bronco Fans!

“Writing a Memoir is different than an autobiography”

A Memoir is a collection of memories that an individual writes about moments or events, both public or private, that took place in the subject’s life. The assertions made in the work are understood to be factual.

But it is also a personal essay about a significant memory in the author’s life that uses narrative devices like setting, character, and dialogue. Molding your “chosen memory” and in our case, ‘ How Addictions, Money, and a Shift from God and The Loss of a Son,’  that I am writing for Vance and bringing his story to an appropriate structure, using vivid detail and examining the memory’s significance will help us write a strong memoir

So our writing journey has begun and is moving along. Now I want to be transparent as possible as Vance and I continue to write together. I spoke with Vance yesterday and he is moving forward with working with a marketer and making choices on what type of book cover to go with. Do we do that now? Or do we wait to read the full manuscript first? Your thoughts readers? I also want to share a little about the process of writing and how at times one can be unsure of themselves of what to share about one’s life. We would love feedback from all who visits this post as a ‘Wee Bit of Encouragement’ to my writing partner. We’re exploring the topic and feelings of writing about others in the memoir, but is there a line we just don’t cross?

THE DILEMMA:

When I wrote my book/memoir, and it turned into a book manuscript (all by GOD Intervention), I too was riddled with reservations about some of the personal family drama and dysfunctional episodes that went on in my home I grew up in. I was raised at a time when you never bring “shame” to the family and never talk about what goes on in our homes out in public. Well, needless to say, I felt I needed to share of the topics as those events were a direct link to some of the roots of why I had turned to addiction later in life. NO, I didn’t share to hurt my family or those I spoke of, I did it to give an in-depth look inside one’s life and share how all of the events, abuse, chaos, and trauma in my home had an effect on me. Especially into adulthood. Not all children are raised in a perfect home environment the “Brady Bunch or The Cleavers.”

18740206_1475517262512499_4040642578205985112_n

Now? Vance is struggling a little with some of these decisions as we write. What does he expose or not about his family, events or old memories about growing up as to NOT hurt or offend his parents, sister, or others?

I explained to Vance that his book and the journey are not about them or others, it is about him and looking at the past pain and events that had an effect on his life and had carried that into his adult life and how he made it through to the man “Standing In Grace and Saving Lives from Addiction today.  Am I Wrong?  How do you feel about that? GOD never promised us a Perfect Life without trials and lessons to overcome.  Vance has come through many storms and trauma from addictions.  My own side of the family and I had been estranged for about six years before my book was released. But Vance’s family are in his life, but just not aboard with this book project.

So, do we share the good, the bad and the UGLY? Or do we change direction or not write his memoir chronological and start in a different place? Isn’t this part of Vance’s healing process of taking stock, process and then turn it over to GOD? Or is there a fine thin blue line between the paper your not to cross?

Any feedback, advice, and comments would be helpful and appreciated. It is why we chose to invite everyone to follow our journey. Your voice and advice is important for our project.

About Book One:

Lizzie, a small-town waitress, thought she’d finally met her prince charming in Dr. Grant Chatsworth. She was young and in love, and the quick courtship ended with the four karat diamond engagement ring of her dreams. Now residing in one of Buckhead’s finest estates, Lizzie soon learns all that glitters is not gold. Her handsome husband, a renowned cardiac surgeon, and developer of a new congestive heart failure drug was becoming cruel and controlling. Lizzie finds herself captive in the vast expanse of his estate without a phone or a car, and under the watchful eye of Flossie. When Lizzie discovers that her husband’s drug development company is a Ponzi scheme, she realizes that her life could be in danger if she doesn’t somehow escape the gated mansion on the hill.

With her parents deceased, her only hope is to get to Biloxi, Mississippi and seek refuge with her sister, Maggie. Maggie and her husband Leland quickly find a safe harbor for Lizzie in a house on the bayou. However, the house at the end of the street might not be the quiet retreat Lizzie was hoping for. The confines of her hideaway soon get to Lizzie so she begins sneaking out in the middle of the night to walk in the historic cemetery next door.

One night a damaged, carved lamb on top of the tombstone of a small child catches her eye, and the story of the child immediately captures her heart. Just when Lizzie Chatsworth thinks her world can’t get any more complicated, she finds herself in the middle of a mystery from the 1800’s that is pulling her in and demanding she seeks justice. As her husband’s empire begins to crumble, he’s more determined than ever to find Lizzie and kill her. But, will the mystery of Baby Belle’s death end Lizzie’s life first?

Offer Up Your Own Articles As
A Writer!

One often overlooked means of getting great publicity is to contribute articles you wrote yourself to publications. Not only does your published byline boost your visibility, it provides an excellent credential.

While many of the major national publications don’t accept unsolicited articles, some do set aside space for contributor columns or accept guest columns on their op-ed pages. The New York Daily News and Newsmax, for instance, have published many articles written by our clients. In some cases, these articles have drawn the attention of other media, leading to more exposure for our clients.

Smaller publications, trade magazines, and online publications also may be good places for your articles to land. These publications often have small staffs, so they’re happy to get well-written articles that they don’t have to pay for. Your reward is the publicity you’ll receive because you’ll likely get a credit line that includes your website and email.

To help get you started on the path to publication, here are some do’s and don’ts:

  • Look for submission guidelines on the publication’s website – and follow them! Some publications post their rules for submitting unsolicited articles. They may outline the topics they’re interested in, minimum and/or maximum word counts, and the style. If you find guidelines, stick to them! The No. 1 mistake people make is going over the maximum word count. That will very likely get your article rejected. And, since editors often don’t tell you why they’re rejecting the article, the writer keeps repeating the mistake.
  • Pitch your ideas before writing a full article. While with some publications you can submit a full article, you can save yourself time if you first pitch a few ideas to gauge whether the editor would have any interest. Send a short email offering three or four topics, with a one-paragraph synopsis of each. Add a brief bio highlighting your relevant credentials. The worst they can do is say “no,” and if they do you won’t have wasted your time writing an entire 700-word article, or whatever length was the target.
  • Be prepared to offer exclusivity. Many publications state up front that they will accept only articles that have not been previously published. They may also require the writer to promise that the article won’t be submitted to other publications until a specified number of days pass. Be sure to check the fine print! Or, the editor may tell you it’s OK to publish in magazines that it doesn’t directly compete with.

Sign up for Google Alerts. Don’t assume that the editor will contact you to let you know when the article has actually published. One of the best ways to track that is to sign up for Google Alerts, so you’ll be notified when the article is posted online. Once that happens, be sure to share the link on your website and in social media to get the most out of the moment.

Bylined articles help you establish your reputation as an expert, build your brand and gain visibility. They may lead to an invitation to be a regular contributor, as has happened with a number of our clients. And bylined articles can generate even more interest from other publications whose editors see your work and approach you wanting their own interview or story.

Freedom to SERVE one another…Happy July Fourth

As we pause to celebrate the many freedoms that we enjoy this July Fourth, may we too pause to reflect on how we serve our fellow man, regardless of those things often taint our view of each other. Pause for a moment and reflect on how you express your love for others, even the unlovable, by serving them in grace. May we ALWAYS see freedom as the opportunity it is to not serve self, but one another, the way Jesus would, setting aside pride and embracing the real gospel of love and grace.

We have the freedom to love because LOVE freed us, and we are challenged to LOVE our neighbors, and that means all of them, (even the ones you disagree with.) It’s only in freely loving each other in grace, that we walk out as real witness what the Gospel of Jesus was all about.

Enjoy the fireworks. Enjoy the picnics. Enjoy the celebrations of freedom and reflect on what it really means to one who has been made FREE. It was and never will be about you.

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

SEX and Behind The Door…

Everybody loves sex, to talk about it, to read about it…and I’ve been receiving many questions about my novels and their erotic content.

Behind The Door and Lara´s Journal are psychological and erotic thrillers, but mainly, they are thrillers. Sex in Behind The Door is open, nonjudgmental, and the characters explore their fantasies and sexuality.

Most of the sex scenes in my novels involve Simone’s patients, or they are between Lara and her various lovers, and Simone learns about them while reading an attorney client’s memoir or while analyzing Lara’s journal. Simone is a psychiatrist who treats paraphilia—abnormal sexual behavior—and she writes books on the subject.

After reading my novels, many readers have written to ask about the sexual content, and I would like to answer here, on my blog, some of the questions I’ve received so far:

Question: Is all the unusual sex I read about in your novels real? Do people do those things?

Answer: Yes, I must tell you I research a lot about the subject, and everything I’ve included in my novels is based on things some people actually do—they are all based on people’s fantasies or actual practices, as reported on and researched by psychiatrists.

As I said in a previous post, research is very important for we authors—we need to give our readers information that is credible, and I put just as much time into researching the abnormal sexual behavior as I did studying every other element in my books.

Okay, did I embellish the scenes? Of course, I did—I added touches of humor or sadness—but the acts, the behavior…all those scenes are based on real-life activities.

Question: How do you feel when writing about sex?
Answer: Well, the same way you readers feel while reading about it…you can only experience feelings when reading because I had those feelings while writing.

Question: What is your opinion about unusual sex?
Answer: My opinion is and always will be that anything goes between consenting adults. People find pleasure is all sorts of ways, depending on their tastes and beliefs, but there are two factors that must always be present. One, the participants must all be adults. And two, the participants must all give their consent.

Question: Do you think you are a bad influence on people’s sexual behavior?
Answer: Nobody has that kind of power, and it’s not my intent because I didn’t write a sexual manual, and I don’t teach about sex. Sex is a part of the story…nothing more, nothing less.

And finally, the most common question I get…
Question: Have you ever experienced any of the unusual sexual activities you’ve written about?

Answer: The answer is no, I didn’t, and I don’t intend to… I’m a writer; I don’t need to kill someone to write about murder, and I don’t need to be a masochist to imagine how someone who is might think or behave…

As with every element in my novels—the sex, the mystery, and the murder—I first study and read, and then I imagine who I could use these things in my stories…and then I write about them. That’s how a writer’s mind works.
