Our Fine Novelist Richard E. La Motte Is Making His Books Buzz Through Media Outlets With This Special Author Spotlight and Featured Article Seen On CNBC, Newsbreak, & Many Others. . .

Author Spotlight & Interview with California
Author Richard E. LaMotte

Author Richard E. LaMotte With His Book The Song of Ramon and MariaPhoto byBookBuzz

Richard E. LaMotte is an accomplished author and writer. Now retired from the film and motion picture industry, Richard is devoting his time to his love of stories and spending time with his wife Patricia in Valencia, California. His newest novel, “The Song of Ramon and Maria” was released in September 2022.

Tell readers a little about yourself and what you do today other than writing.

Aside from writing, I enjoy being retired and doing retired people stuff, reading, working in the garden, going to the gym, and having fun and traveling with my wife. I used to draw and paint more and have some work online at some gallery sites (FASO, Fine Art America), but I don’t do that as much anymore. Maybe this Spring, I will get re-inspired.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I love telling stories. I’ve always enjoyed stories that communicated something, some emotion, or moments of experience from someone’s past that offered insight into something I could never know otherwise. I love imagination also, the world of imagination. Combining events and characters from experience and imagination into a new story that communicates something to others became irresistible.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I think it’s connected to being very young and listening to my father tell me stories about his experiences in the First World War as a flyer or my mother and her sisters talking about the Mexican Revolution. I think those moments, being young and hearing the grown-ups talk about past events, history, about a world gone into the past, conjured-up images that I wanted to write down. Not knowing, years later, I would write a novel about those memories.

Do you have a specific writing style?

No. I studied screenwriting at UCLA and SC extension classes and took a summer of Film-Making at Art Center Pasadena, CA, and I’ve had the opportunity to read dozens of Movie Scripts, so the three-act format is pretty well ingrained in my approach to writing. But my reading ranges from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Elmore Leonard and includes Oscar Wild and even Frederic Remington, so I like to assume the style that I think best fits the material.

I used to outline the story on 3×5 cards; now, I start with an Idea (Theme) and a Character, research a setting (story world) and just start. I know act one will run about fifty to a hundred pages and so on.

How did you come up with the title?

‘The Song of Ramon and Maria.’ During the Mexican revolution, a music style was created in Mexico that reflected the troubled times. It’s called a ‘Corrida.’ A Corrida is a kind of poetic ballad, sometimes a cautionary, heart-breaking story of star-crossed lovers. That’s what I wanted to try and write – a heart-breaking story of star-crossed lovers in the context of Mexico’s revolution, but universal in its humanity. Most people won’t relate to the title as I do, but I tried to reinforce the idea with the illustration I did for the book cover.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

Probably my background in filmmaking. I worked for years helping to bring other people’s ideas to the movie screen, and I love the magic of that kind of idea transmission, but I want to create some stories of my own through writing.

Are experiences based on someone you know or events in your own life?

I get story material daily from everywhere, including my memories and past life experiences.

What books have influenced your life the most?

Early on, probably the Bible. Later I read pulp fiction, Private Detective stories like “Shell Scott” and others, sometimes big historical fiction works. They all impressed me with the enjoyment I received, enabling me to experience worlds outside my own.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Staying off of ‘YouTube.’ (Lol)… Actually, I like the challenge. A good challenge pulls things out of you, strengths you didn’t know you had or reveals weaknesses or areas to work on. Keeps you on edge, awake, and alive.

Who designed the covers?

My wife and I do. I painted the cover for “Ramon and Maria.” The photos used for “Crime Story” and “The Treasure” were pulled, purchased, and manipulated by my wife (who is also my reader, editor, formats, and publisher.) As for my film costume book, “Costume Design 101,” I painted the cover for the first edition (Actually a costume sketch from “The Wind and the Lion.”) and the publisher did the cover for the second edition.

Who is your favorite author, and what is it that strikes you about their work?

Honestly, I don’t have a favorite. I like Oscar Wilde’s humor and word choices, Elmore Leonard’s easy story-telling ability and dialogue, Joseph Wambaugh’s throw-away grittiness, and Stephen King’s slyness. So many others. I can’t pick, but I do love reading!

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Sure. When I do, I try and find the source of the block. Is it, ‘I’m out of ideas?’, I’m just ‘tired’, ‘I don’t like this story anymore.’

From there, I fall back until I rediscover my reason for starting and what I found interesting about the original idea, then try and re-focus my energy on a solution. I have about five or six stories open on my computer, so I can switch back and forth and don’t have to stop writing altogether. Actually, working like that means that a story situation I initially thought worked in one story I sometimes find works better in another.

Did you learn anything from writing your book, and what was it?

Don’t ever give up. If it’s a solid idea, it’s waiting there to be uncovered. Just write everything you know about the idea and keep rewriting, honing, researching, and shaping until it’s what you want. It’s like any art project, it can lead you if you let it.

Where would you choose if you could live anywhere in the world for a year while writing your next book?

A condo in Waikiki, or a riad in Marrakech, and a place overlooking the sea in the south of Spain.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I hope you enjoy reading my novels as I wrote them for you, the reader. I sure hope more readers will hear or learn that my novels are available. I am fascinated by reading their book reviews and comments. It helps me know if they like what I am writing. Even what they experience as they escape into a new world through my novels and through written words, if only for a few hours.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Brazil?
Brazil is a blend of cultures, religions, colors, and freedom that inspired me to write novels based on all kinds of subjects, from psychiatry to sex, with no bias and no judgments.

What or who inspired you to become a writer?
My legal career, the necessity to tell my clients’ stories for judges made me a storyteller but also my passion for books, I’m a voracious reader and I love a good story. I believe my love for books inspired me to write.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage?
My upbringing was great, my parents always gave me a lot of freedom to do things my way, they were always very supportive of my decisions and that helps a lot when you decide to start a different career like writing. To have a supportive family allows me to fly.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published?
Three years ago, but I have been writing since I was a kid.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process?
To be able to do what I love most in life, tell stories.

What has been the most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Publishing brought new and wonderful friends among writers and readers to my life, people from all corners of the world. That’s the best in my opinion, to have friends.

How many published books do you have?
Three. A legal book published in Brazil and Two Novels.

Please list the titles of all your books: Included in my “Hidden Motives Trilogy is: Behind The Door (Book One) – Lara’s Journal Book Two) and now – The Brilliant Game (Book Three Finale).

Please tell us the genre of each of your books.
All three are Sizzling Psychological Light Erotic Thriller/Suspense …

Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript?
The first one I was in the middle when the name came to me and the second one I knew from the beginning. Now I just finished and released a new novel titled; The Brilliant Game!

.

p&b

.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre?
My genre is a blend of psychological and erotic thrillers with a “dash” of mystery and suspense. I’m a huge fan of mysteries and thrillers because I love to be surprised. I love the unpredictable, so thrillers are my genre. I wanted my novel to have all right ingredients like Passion, mystery, unpredictability, love, and drama that only psychological and erotic thrillers can have.

Which book title would you like featured in this interview?
Behind The Door – the first one of “Hidden Motives Series.” And a New Release Shout Out of my New Release:  The Brilliant Game.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for?
I was traveling with my best friend Alisson and I we were talking about books and he told me: “we should write, we have lots of stories to tell.” And I told him: “Yes, let’s do it!” So that’s how Behind The Door’s idea start to sprout in my mind.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors?
If you want to be an author, start writing for yourself and don’t mind about pleasing people, think about writing for your own pleasure and you will have a masterpiece.

And Lastly, Who is your favorite author and why?
So many marvelous writers inspired me…to start with, the classical ones, such as Emily Bronte, Stendhal, Dumas, Saad Marquis, Margaret Mitchell…and modern ones, such as Morris West, Marc Levy, Tom Clancy, Dan Brown, John Grisham, and Colleen McCullough…but I could list a hundred here…the poems of Alisson Matos—a Brazilian writer, and poetry from Baudelaire to Allan Poe.

SEX and Behind The Door…

Everybody loves sex, to talk about it, to read about it…and I’ve been receiving many questions about my novels and their erotic content.

Behind The Door and Lara´s Journal are psychological and erotic thrillers, but mainly, they are thrillers. Sex in Behind The Door is open, nonjudgmental, and the characters explore their fantasies and sexuality.

Most of the sex scenes in my novels involve Simone’s patients, or they are between Lara and her various lovers, and Simone learns about them while reading an attorney client’s memoir or while analyzing Lara’s journal. Simone is a psychiatrist who treats paraphilia—abnormal sexual behavior—and she writes books on the subject.

After reading my novels, many readers have written to ask about the sexual content, and I would like to answer here, on my blog, some of the questions I’ve received so far:

Question: Is all the unusual sex I read about in your novels real? Do people do those things?

Answer: Yes, I must tell you I research a lot about the subject, and everything I’ve included in my novels is based on things some people actually do—they are all based on people’s fantasies or actual practices, as reported on and researched by psychiatrists.

As I said in a previous post, research is very important for we authors—we need to give our readers information that is credible, and I put just as much time into researching the abnormal sexual behavior as I did studying every other element in my books.

Okay, did I embellish the scenes? Of course, I did—I added touches of humor or sadness—but the acts, the behavior…all those scenes are based on real-life activities.

Question: How do you feel when writing about sex?
Answer: Well, the same way you readers feel while reading about it…you can only experience feelings when reading because I had those feelings while writing.

Question: What is your opinion about unusual sex?
Answer: My opinion is and always will be that anything goes between consenting adults. People find pleasure is all sorts of ways, depending on their tastes and beliefs, but there are two factors that must always be present. One, the participants must all be adults. And two, the participants must all give their consent.

Question: Do you think you are a bad influence on people’s sexual behavior?
Answer: Nobody has that kind of power, and it’s not my intent because I didn’t write a sexual manual, and I don’t teach about sex. Sex is a part of the story…nothing more, nothing less.

And finally, the most common question I get…
Question: Have you ever experienced any of the unusual sexual activities you’ve written about?

Answer: The answer is no, I didn’t, and I don’t intend to… I’m a writer; I don’t need to kill someone to write about murder, and I don’t need to be a masochist to imagine how someone who is might think or behave…

As with every element in my novels—the sex, the mystery, and the murder—I first study and read, and then I imagine who I could use these things in my stories…and then I write about them. That’s how a writer’s mind works.

“An Intimate Author Interview With Romance Thriller Author, A. Gavazzoni Here on Cat Lyon’s Reading Den.”

Hello, and Welcome Readers and Friends,

Today we have Author, A. Gavazzoni as our guest author interview and she has just released her second novel of her romance psychological thriller series. Her first book titled; “Behind The Door: Hidden Motives – book one” has just received a “Golden Box Books Judges Choice” book award! She has released book two titled; ” Lara’s Journal: A Sizzling Psychological Thriller” that I feel will HIT #1 on Amazon Kindle soon.  So let’s read and learn more about this beautiful Brazilian Lawyer by day and writer of steamy suspense by night, Author, A. (Adriana) Gavazzoni . . . .

.

.

(Q) Tell us a little about your new release of Lara’s Journal – book two and how it differs from your first novel ‘Behind the Door’?

“Lara´s Journal is the sequel to Behind The Door, and in this new novel, the reader is going to discover the hidden motives behind Lara´s behavior as an adult. Readers will get to know her, learning about her childhood through her college years.

Simone suffers deep changes in this second novel, thanks to the traumas she endured in the first book. In Lara’s Journey, Simone decides to enjoy life in a different way. The new book contains mystery, murder, and all criminal scenes were checked and endorsed by a former FBI agent, so they are as realistic as possible.

The book is also steamy as hell, so prepare for sex beyond any limits—even more scandalous than what readers encountered in Behind The Door”

(Q) How many books will be in your novel series?

I believe I’m going to write at least three…but I don´t put reins on or apply rules to my imagination; I let it run free!

(Q) What writing challenges did you have with Book Two? Was it more difficult to write than ‘Behind The Door’?

Book two has many criminal situations that required a frequent consultation with FBI agents, and also, I had to study a lot of psychiatry to create Lara and the other characters, but I don´t think writing Lara’s Journey was more difficult than writing Behind The Door, I believe the first novel was more difficult because it was the first one.

One difficulty I really had was to cut the second novel before it reached a thousand pages…and hold on to the rest of the story, keeping it in my mind for book number three.

.

.

(Q) Tell us about yourself?

Well…I am from Brazil…and I am a very active person, or better, I am hyperactive. Professionally I’m a lawyer and a writer…I love to dance, to work out, to read and to cook ( I can cook some amazing dishes and now I’m learning Indian Cook…spicy!!!!). I am also addicted to movies.I love to learn foreigner languages and culture ( I speak English, French, Spanish and Portuguese) and I travel abroad whenever I can. I love art and I’m a museum rat and passionate about history. I love animals. All kind of animals. And I have two dogs, two beautiful girls, Gaia and Juno.

(Q)  What inspires you to write?

Human nature inspired me. I love to observe people and try to guess why they behave the way they do…it’s all about hidden motives and we all have ours.

(Q) Do you have any unusual writing habits?

Whenever I have an idea for a scene I send messages to myself (whats app and e-mails) LOL.

(Q) What authors, or books have influenced you?

So many marvelous writers inspired me…to start with the classical ones like Emily Bronte, Stendhal, Dumas, Saad Marquis, Margaret Mitchell and modern ones like Marc Levy, Tom Clancy, Dan Brown, John Grisham and Colleen McCullough …but I could list a hundred here…the poems of Alisson Matos – a Brazilian writer – from Baudelaire to Allan Poe.

(Q) Do you have any advice for new authors? And what was the best advice you have gotten?

For writers, if you love to write, believe you are going to be a published writer/author and never give up on your dream! Now, the best overall advice I ever heard came from my father; “learn everything you can, Nobody can take knowledge from you.”

.

.

(Q) Now to round out your interview, a few personal detail. What is your favorite color and favorite foods?

My favorite color is red, and I don´t know if I have a favorite food, as I enjoy trying everything, but I really love any kind of spicy food—Thai, Indian, Brazilian Bahía´s food. I take great pleasure in the dining experience and think of it as a sensual activity, so, whenever I can…I try something really different.

(Q) And last, what is one “secret” about you that readers don’t know or can’t find to about you?

I´m an open person, so if someone asks me a direct question, I will answer. I don’t think I have any deep, dark secrets or skeletons in my closet, but there is one thing people might not guess about me—I´m very childlike, and I love to watch cartoons, Disney movies, and go to amusement parks. Nothing is more fun to me than a crazy-dangerous roller coaster that causes me to shout and scream until I’m hoarse! LOL!
