First Sneak Peek Of Trail of Fate~And so it begins!

LATE 1800s – COLORADO FOOTHILLS

REG

The air was crisp and cool, carrying a hint of sage and the constant feel of prairie dust.
I slept as all men on horseback do, using their well-worn saddle as a pillow and the stars as trail companions. The morning light began to show in a cloudless blue sky.

The small fire I built helped keep the morning chill at bay, and the smell of wood smoke and fresh coffee was a pleasant aroma.

I had a hundred memories of times gone by sitting around a fire with a pot of hot coffee, enjoying the fire by myself or with companions. New or old timers, ones from just over the hill or miles away in this vast country, we all had a story to share.

The one thing we had in common was the stories. We kept a few to ourselves, but there were others we gladly shared. Coffee and a campfire were the best ways to gather information, or maybe just by listening to a tall tale that would be passed on for many years. It was the cowboy way to keep a person’s memory and legacy alive.

All my senses snapped into full alert when I heard the report of a gunshot in the distance. Another shot rang out as I strained to look through the early morning’s dim light. Instantly, I determined it was shots from two separate guns.

Every gun carried a specific tune; some were short and snappy, while others played a smoother ring. The shots split the air only seconds apart and rang from what seemed south of my location. I figured the shots echoed up from the valley floor below me, and with the sound traveling uphill, I estimated it to be about two miles down the adjacent draw.

The air and the surrounding area were now as ghostly quiet as a graveyard. I thought about why the shots had occurred. I was in the middle of no man’s land. . .

~ Now Another Special Sneak Peek Excerpt Read Of Trial of Fate ~ Enjoy! 🌵🐎🌵📚🤠

Just as the bounty hunters left town, the stagecoach filled with passengers and luggage rolled to a stop directly in front of the ladies. The make-shift station inside the café was the regular drop-off point in Two Forks.

A clean-cut gentleman stepped out of the coach, waving away the road dust, and greeted the proprietor.

“Hello, I would like to introduce myself, my dear lady. My name is Mr. Asher Lionel,” he said as he leaned on a black walking stick topped by a cut glass knob.

“My charges and I are passing through, and I hope to find a suitable establishment to settle in and rest our weary bones for a few days. Would you be kind enough to direct me and point out a fine eatery, as well?”

“Uncle, have we finally arrived after being delayed an extra day? And for a baby, no less!” said a young lady inside the coach. “I am parched and disheveled from riding in this awful conveyance.”

“That would be my niece, Jaida,” he said. “Well, then, alight and enjoy nature’s bounty.”

Mr. Asher put his hand forward to help Jaida out of the carriage. The teenage lass wore finery that suggested she was on her way to the debutant’s ball in New York City. She flapped her arms and flounced her dress, fussing over the dust on her delicate slipper shoes.

Jetta covered her mouth so the girl wouldn’t see her giggle while Sara poked her in the ribs.

“Oh, my goodness,” Sara whispered.

“Uncle, may I get out of this cage, also?” said a boy looking out of the side window of the coach. “I don’t want to miss watching a cowboy in a gunfight while stuck inside this box.”

“And that voice belongs to her younger brother and my nephew, Chase,” said the impeccable Mr. Asher.

And out of the carriage shot a young boy in a beige linen traveling suit smeared with sweat-dried dust around the collar and handprints on the trousers.

“Nephew, a bath for you before we dine!”

“Welcome to Two Forks,” Maggie said. “My goodness, the dust is thick today,” she continued, blaming her choking voice on the ever-present street dust. “Please step up onto the boardwalk and out of the street.”

“Street? You call this a street?” said Jaida in the most sarcastic tone. “This looks more like a back alley in the slums.”

“Jaida, your manners!”

Maggie stepped off the boardwalk to glance inside the coach to unload the baby, but no one seemed willing to help. Baby, what baby? I thought I heard her say they were delayed because of a baby.

Wanting to assure herself that it was empty, she glanced again and stepped away from the coach, wide-eyed but saying nothing.

She recognized the famous Mr. Scott sitting inside and thought it best to keep quiet until he revealed his presence.

* * * * * *

“Watch yourselves! This here stuff ain’t gonna unload its own self.
Dern! Whacha totin’ in them bags, rocks? Look out under me,” said Bailey, Zeke’s newly hired driver, as luggage pieces rained down off the coach.

“Missy, you best get ya some boots for stompin’ here abouts. Ya getting’ me, ya heah me? Rattlers and such bite mitey hard.”

“My carpetbags are ruined!” Jaida moaned as she saw one had landed in a horse’s road apple.

Interrupting the grumbling, Maggie welcomed the newcomers again and invited them inside the café for a meal.

Sara served Zeke and Bailey a glass of lemonade before they scrambled out the door to hit the trail.

“Ready to giddyap, Zeke?” Bailey asked.

“I believe I am ready to leave these city slickers in our dust, Bailey,” replied Zeke with a shake of his head.

“Well, don’t leave me here with this bunch,” grumbled the unknown man from inside the coach, who obviously preferred to remain unidentified. “I will take my chances to unload elsewhere if you don’t mind.”

“Hiya, you girls! Giddyap, there!” Bailey called to the team.

Sara stood in the corner, gaping at the three sitting in the dining room. She had never witnessed people act like this anywhere, especially in Two Forks.

Gazing through the oversized café windows, Jaida’smouth worked like a guppy gasping for air as she watched Bailey’s hat fly off her head, landing on her shoulders. Luckily, Bailey wore a rawhide tie on her hat, or she would have lost it in her rush to get the team away from the depot.

“Why, Uncle, that was a girl who drove our stagecoach. How utterly uncivilized,” remarked Jaida.

“What? A girl! Now this I gotta see,” echoed Chase, knowing if this were true, he would have the first of many stories to tell his friends when they returned home.

“Looks like the town could have some excitement coming our way in the near future,” Maggie said, nodding her head with a spring in her step.

No sooner were those words out of Maggie’s mouth than Jaida became even more astonished.

“Here comes some sort of wagon with another girl driving it. Surely you DO NOT expect me to learn the ways of the dust-eating, uneducated, backwoods mountain girls while we are staying here?” she yelped while Maggie’s customers stared in awe.

Maggie looked out the window and said, “Oh, look. It’s Nancy back with the girls, and she let Caty drive. I wonder if they have any news from the ranch?”

Cat’s Special Super Bowl Guest Author, Meet Randy Grimes & His New Book Titled “Off Center: A Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, & Redemption in Professional Football,” And Why Everyone Needs To Read This Book.

Usually, I don’t start my guest spotlights of an author by sharing my book review and other reviews already on Amazon first.

This is not an ordinary special guest spotlight with Randy being a first-time best-selling Amazon Author; I’m kind of excited to get to the good stuff first. Please, meet Randy Grimes, an awesome friend, and I’ll share all about him and his amazing wife with you after the reviews. Since he and his wife are attending their 13th Super Bowl in Calf., I thought I would have him as my Special Guest Author to share his fantastic new book!

Randy Grimes is a former professional football player who played his whole NFL career for the Tampa Bay Bucs. He was drafted right out of college, playing for Baylor University. Just a little boy from Tyler, Texas, who had big dreams of just playing the game and sport of football. But, he never knew addiction was lying in wait years later.

That is a smidge of what you learn while reading his new memoir titled “Off Center: A Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, and Redemption in Professional Football.” It has been a long journey for Randy to get this exceptional book written and to the finish line to release.

And, “how sweet it is” that it was released right before the Super Bowl ~ 2022!

Of course, Randy and Lydia have been busy in California with all the Super Bowl festivities and soaking in the sun while Randy does his NFL duties (lol), like Radio Row at the Super Bowl this past week. Not only to promote and share his new memoir but share a message of HOPE. Also, sharing what he and Lydia and other former pro athletes do through their organization of https://proathletesinrecovery.org/our-story/ that I highly suggest everyone should take a visit!

CAT’S BOOK REVIEW FOR:

Off Center: A Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, and Redemption in Professional Football

by Randy Grimes and (Forward) by Mike Ditka | Feb 4, 2022

CAT’S REVIEW:

I am an Avid Cat Reader!

5.0 out of 5 stars “I Need More Than Five Stars to Rate!

Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022

Off-Center by Author Randy Grimes is a former NFL Pro who played with the Tampa Bay Bucs. Unfortunately, his memoir is not your average read. Randy’s story, testimony, and intervention of another are fine examples of how anyone can be “touched” by addiction, be it a regular person or even as a sports pro.

With big dreams of playing football, a little boy from Tyler, Texas, had no idea that addiction had been lying in wait for years. That is the cunningness of any addiction. Randy’s memoir also shows how this can happen without going rogue with ego or status or being a “Party Guy.” If there is anything he knows best, Texas is known for, “The Love For Family, Faith, Church on Sunday, and FOOTBALL!

While he shares his life, past pro career, while sharing an intervention and part of the advocacy work is some of what you find between the pages of this exceptional book. With “No Shame,” the author shares the real and raw of his downfall, how he crawled on his hands and knees into a treatment center, and another example of how many athletes end up having addiction problems later in their career afterward.

It seems that when you play pro sports and have the best doctors and sports medicine professionals helping you stay in the game, and it’s over? All the author wanted to do was get rid of the pain from all the injuries he had. So sad he had no guidance after he left pro football.

Then the true miracle of faith begins to work within his life after losing just about everything he worked so hard for and to provide for his family, as he went from being lost, addicted, and spiritually broken to a man who stands tall today within redemption! And that is only the tip of the iceberg you’ll read within this fantastic memoir.

I have read many memoirs from other sports pros, and this one is not your standard braggy sports stats and facts. Everyone should read this book and learn how anyone can change and turn their lives around after addiction. Randy and Lydia help many athletes gain life from addiction while healing the whole family through several foundations.

I highly suggest parents read this memoir/book, and I enjoy reading a great book that can teach you something while cheering (for Randy) simultaneously! It’s what makes this book a must-read.

Now, this Cat has been in the business of book promoting and marketing for an extended time. That means I’ve read many memoirs from everyday folks to many high-profile people like celebrities, sports pros, and others.

I can honestly tell you there is a little something within the pages of this book for anyone who enjoys reading.

So with that said, here is more about Randy’s book and a few more reviews for “Off Center” that share “The Why” you need to read this fantastic memoir. Since the book was released on Amazon Books and Amazon Kindle a few days ago, Randy’s biography has HIT #1 in over 6 different categories.
Now that is priceless and a darn good read!

ABOUT THE NEW MEMOIR of RANDY GRIMES

Randy Grimes quickly learned one important truth as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers top draft pick: play through pain or get cut.

This is just part of being a pro athlete, he told himself.

Growing up in Tyler, Texas, Grimes’s life was very much on center. A childhood spent in church on Sundays and on the gridiron all week turned into a football scholarship to Baylor, marriage to his college sweetheart, and a coveted NFL roster spot.

When the Bucs’ starting center began piling up brutal hits, he determined to do anything to stay in the game. If the pills prescribed by the team doctors could help, Grimes would take them.

“All in a day’s work,” he told himself.

Even before Grimes left the NFL, his life began slipping off center. Eventually, he lost almost everything he owned, the respect of his children, and very nearly his life, before tumbling out of the car and crawling on hands and knees into a treatment center—literally—into a life-changing miracle.

Off Center is Randy Grimes’s riveting story of having it all, playing the sport he loved, losing almost everything, and ultimately finding redemption and hope. Witness the addiction trap that binds millions and claims thousands of lives each year—and the steps Grimes took to reclaim his life and guide others.

Today Grimes and his wife, Lydia, stage drug and alcohol interventions for professional athletes, celebrities, business leaders, and everyday Americans to find recovery from addiction.

Recovery has become his playbook. His treatment center colleagues are his team. And those with addiction are his community.

Above all, Randy & Lydia Grimes want people to know: “Even when the world seems to be yours, there is room to fall. And even when that world seems to slip away, there is hope.

A Few More Book Reviews For “Off Center.”

Off Center Book Image

“I saw something very special in Randy Grimes while recruiting him from high school to Baylor University. I saw a leader, a warrior, someone who would battle through any obstacle to reach his goals. The pages of this book just reaffirm what I already knew. Nothing, not even addiction, could ever keep Randy Grimes down. A great comeback story!”
—Grant Teaff; head coach, Baylor University 1972-1992; executive director, American Football Coaches Association; College Football Hall of Fame

Off Center Book Image

“I’ve seen athletes who wanted to be great but were unwilling to do the necessary hard work over the years. Recovery is similar. Some want to be sober—but are unwilling to do what it takes. Not only did Randy do the work, but his story is the perfect example of the fruits of recovery. This book is one of those fruits!”
—”Sudden” Sam McDowell; MLB pitcher, Cleveland Indians 1961-1975; six times MLB All-Star; author, The Saga of Sudden Sam

Off Center Book Image

“I played during the same time as Randy and shared his conference and in fact, faced his team twice a year. I know firsthand the pressures he faced to stay on the field. I also know the play-at-all-costs mentality that existed then. Randy accurately describes the dark side of the NFL, and what many were and still are willing to do to be the best. Great job, my NFL brother!”
—Eric Hipple; NFL QB, Detroit Lions 1980-1989; mental health advocate; author, Real Men Do Cry

I sure hope all my readers, friends, and visitors have enjoyed reading this Special Super Bowl Guest Author Spotlight all about my friend and call Randy a fellow author too!

The image above is the most memorable day I hold dear as my hubby, “Big Tom,” and I finally met Randy and Lydia’s beautiful wife.

They were gracious to come and speak for an event I pulled together for a friend at the Arizona State Capital to raise awareness of all addictions to share our recoveries, and it was the BEST DAY EVER! (Lol).

Randy and I have supported one another’s recovery for almost four years. Randy and Lydia have been amazing friends and kind mentors to Tom and me. We have advocated and have networked together several times. So when I call him while I am helping someone in need of recovery or intervention advice, he is always the first to answer my call…

So we are blessed to call them both our friends.

CAT’S BOOK REVIEW and RATING: Solid 4- STARS

Hauntingly Dark and Mysterious … Is The Watchful Dead

I will start by being transparent as this is not my normal genre of choice. I am also not a spoiler of any books. And, when I first read Mr. Pawlowski’s book title, my first thought was “Pirates”… far from it!

However, what a real ebook page-turner from the first few pages. A little too “gothic” for my taste, but this read had all the elements of dark thrilling mysterious suspense that holds your attention and keeps you deep within the pages and storyline.

Exceptionally written with unearthly characters, an end you really don’t see coming, and as a writer, I have no clue how this author kept up with all that goes on with Ring’s deeply disturbing and dysfunctional family and the full storyline unfolds.

And Oh the twisty weaves of dark magic, ghostly characters who passed on, fantasy and so much more within this great read.

I would suggest it to those who do enjoy a darker gothic thrill ride!
Definitely worth the read.

Meet Author, Johnnie Calloway and His New Book;”Dragons to Butterflies: The Metamorphosis of a Man” This Month’s Book Pick!

“A journey of tragedy to triumph, from the broken heart of an abused child to the beautiful soul of a man…”

A true-to-life story by Johnnie Calloway .  .  .  .

Publisher: Balboa Press (April 3, 2016) ~ Author, Johnnie Calloway.

About “Dragons to Butterflies”

Johnnie Calloway is a gifted storyteller and has written a superb personal account of his harrowing childhood and adult life. Although he retells his experiences of emotional and physical abuse, neglect, heartache, and betrayal, and later his own addictions and struggles with mental illness, he manages to keep the reader thoroughly engaged and inspired by his strength and wisdom throughout this page-turner.

Johnnie’s willingness to be soul-bracingly honest in this book as he traces his earliest memories into his teens and then adult years is truly unlike anything I have ever read. I have no doubt that his display of courage and his determination to go to any lengths necessary for his own healing will serve as a guiding light for countless readers. It is a story of hope and love, forgiveness and healing. I only wish it had been available when I was a practicing addictions counselor. I would have made it required reading!

Johnnie Calloway has spent much of his life fighting one battle after another. A long train of unfortunate events carried him from a violent childhood to an equally unstable adulthood. Calloway chronicles his journey to create a promising future from an oppressive past in “Dragons to Butterflies: Metamorphosis of a Man.”

Calloway recounts his endless struggles in “Dragons to Butterflies.” He narrates his early years with an emotionally and physically abusive father, which led to substance abuse and mental illness as an adult. Calloway provides a detailed history with his demons, using his trials and tribulations to propel him towards growth and strength.

“It was incredibly painful to relive some of the moments that I wrote about in Dragons to Butterflies,” Calloway said. “But in order to inspire others, I knew I would need to be open about all that I have been through. My hope is that others will be motivated to move beyond their abuse and use the past as motivation for the future.”

“Dragons to Butterflies” takes one man’s true story of cruelty and transforms it into one of love, forgiveness, and hope. For more information on the author and book, please visit website and blog: http://www.dragonstobutterflies.com. Connect on  Facebook and

Still, Johnnie always wanted to be the “good guy.” The conflict between his personal desire and his sense of obligation to his dad’s/family’s reputation created a great torment that was oddly accompanied with an insatiable yearning to learn.

Eventually, Johnnie became a seeker of truth. And has now devoted himself to sharing what he is seeking has taught him with others. Awareness of the issue
Format: Kindle Edition

“Steve / (Bert) really drills down to the one “addiction” we can all associate with (unless you’re in denial). Control.

Speaking for myself; I have always wanted what I want and when I wanted it. But how can we control anything? To a large extent we can’t; we’re really mostly powerless, which leads to so many of societies and individuals social, financial, sexual, etc. ….. problems.
This book will not solve these issues or your own compulsive and controlling behavior. It will, however, make you keenly aware of where humans (not monkeys) are using such behavior. Once you are aware” ………

A Mind Opener
Format: Kindle Edition

“LOVE THIS BOOK! Well written, concise and very insightful. Think anyone would benefit from reading it – and it’s very easy to read. Really glad I found Steve’s blog, and grateful he put all his thoughts together in book form. If I could, would give Monkeytraps more stars than five!!” **********
