Welcome, John Tracy and His New CD Release Titled “Quintessential.”

I am so thrilled and honored to once again have my dear friend and a fantastic musician and recording artist, John Tracy back with us. Now, your most likely wondering why Cat is spotlighting a musician since most of my spotlights are with authors and about books. Well, musicians are writers too!

Writing music I am sure can have a whole different set of challenges and be very rewarding when a new CD is finished like John’s new one titled “Quintessential.” So this time I am including a little interview with John on just how this new CD came about. Besides, Cat loves listening to music and I enjoy John’s sound of a little it soft rock with a dash of country twang … He makes a difference in the lives of the people who listen to and love his music on our “Journey of Life!” ~Catherine Lyon

My Interview With John Tracy

.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Fort Worth, TX. I actually lived there most of my life until we moved to Virginia six years ago. It was just time for a change. Actually, I think my soul was crying out for a change, but that’s a whole other story. Our daughters moved to the East Coastand Virginia just seemed to be calling our name.

We spent some time in Charlottesville and last year moved to Richmond to put down new roots. I love the vibe in this community – it’s a big city without being pretentious.

What inspired your writing and the new release of Quintessential?

This album is mostly an accumulation of the most recent songs I’ve written. It’s always exciting to get the new stuff out into the world. According to Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of “Quintessential” is “of the pure and essential essence of something” and “of or relating to the most perfect embodiment of something.” When we started out working on this album, I don’t think we had an overall theme in mind. Like I said, these were just the newest songs written and I think they are my best to date.

However, once we got started, I think the overall theme of the songs we put together is the quest to find that pure and essential essence. Perhaps that’s in the love and peace in “Home,” or in the comfort of listening to the “Midnight Moon.” Maybe it is in finding the joy in “Blue Sunny Skies,” or the longing for that healthy relationship in “The Shallow Game.”

Do you have training in music or attended music school?

I don’t have formal music training. I had a couple of guitar teachers early on that showed me the basics. As far as my fingerpicking style of playing guitar, I developed that on my own, playing by ear. I had a reel-to-reel (ok, I’m dating myself here) and I would record favorite songs onto tape and then play them back bar by bar, teaching myself to play every note.

What music and other musicians do listen to and inspire you?

Early on, I was inspired by all of my musical heroes from the 70s – singer/songwriters like Simon & Garfunkel, Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Jim Croce, etc. That was an era to me when music really said something, lyrics were meaningful, and melodies were intricate and interesting.

To be completely honest, I find it hard to be inspired by many mainstream artists in this current musical era. The music is either too electronic or to manufactured (meaning it all sounds the same) and it just doesn’t move me. There are artists that are fun to listen to of course, but I don’t find a lot of inspiration for my own songwriting.

The cool thing about working with Kevin is that he honors who I am as a singer and a songwriter, allowing me to be myself while adding in elements that are modern and current without destroying the integrity of the songs.

How long did this CD take and why?

It took almost a year from first recordings to the final product. We do things a bit differently perhaps than most. We record a scratch or demo of the song (just vocals and acoustic guitar) and send that to our producer, Kevin McNoldy at Cphonic Mastering.

He then lays down the framework for the song – a bass line, drums, maybe some piano or electric guitar. From there, we go back and re-record the vocal and acoustic guitar tracks. Once we’re finished with our parts, it’s back to Kevin for more instrumentation and background vocals. We kind of go back and forth like this, bouncing around ideas, adding or taking away parts until we’ve carved out the perfect song. This is why it takes a little while.

However, we don’t get in a rush. We work the song until all three of us (my wife Teri, who is the co-producer, Kevin and myself) are happy. I have that luxury because I am an independent artist not beholden to a label. It allows me to make good quality music, not music that has to be forced into a formula or rushed through.

Your unique offer to do House Concerts is very different, how did this idea come about?

I’ll be really honest – these are the most fun and rewarding events for me. They are intimate, personal and the audience is really there to listen to what I bring. Unlike a bar or restaurant where there are tons of distractions and so much competing for the audience’s attention. Or like large venues where the audience is removed and separate that it’s harder to feel a connection with them.

My music is a bit more sophisticated than what is typically on the radio. So, it’s best appreciated when you can actually listen to and take in the lyrics and feel the melody move your soul. A house concert is the ideal setting for that. And the audience finds it ultimately more rewarding as well. Not only do they get to know the music, but they get to hear the stories behind the songs and get a glimpse into who I am not only as an artist but as a person.

If anyone out there is interested in learning more, just stop by my website
www.johntracymusic.com/houseconcerts.

Where in any state is your favorite place or venue to play and why?

That’s a tough one! I’ve had the opportunity to play all across the US and in Europe. Honestly, anywhere that I have an attentive audience is a favorite for me.

I will share this story talking about house concerts. About three years ago, I met a radio host from Sweden on Twitter. We hit it off in our conversations online. In 2016, I had the opportunity to travel to Europe, so I talked to him about hosting a house concert. It was something he had never heard about before but was intrigued by the idea. So, he set it up, inviting friends and family from all over Sweden. Some came from as far away as Norway. Everyone commented about how much fun it was to get together, have time to visit and then be able to enjoy live music together. They had so much fun, they keep asking when I’m coming back.

Tell us a little more about John Tracy, like, are you married? Have Kids? Pets? Hobbies?

I am married to my soulmate and my best friend Teri. Celebrating and coming up on 35 years together later this year. We have two grown girls, both out of college and on their own journey. We have a family pet – a Dachshund named Princess who has been in our family for 17 years now.

Aside from music, my biggest passions are food and movies. Favorite food is anything that doesn’t eat me first. We’re huge sci-fi fans in our family – Teri and I, our first date was watching “Return of the Jedi” and we indoctrinated our girls early in the way of the Force. Lol.

Lastly, what is one funny “Secret or Fedish” about your fans and new ones won’t read or find out about?

Well, funny and probably depends on who you are asking. I am a bit OCD and can drive my family crazy. I’m not sure if you remember the TV show “Monk” about a private investigator who was intensely OCD, making him a great detective. I’m not quite that bad, though my kids bought me the DVD set of the show for Christmas one year as an inside joke.

############

Well, John, you are in good company as I too have OCD and a few other challenges in that department! Lol. I thank you kindly for allowing me to share you and your new CD! Since fall has arrived and winter not far behind, readers will be gearing up for READING! So I thought I would start a new fun feature on “Spotlighting” bloggers, authors, musicians and more as “the real writers they are.”

A more in-depth profile of their writing as a writer and learn what makes them tick. We all write for many reasons like just writing from the heart in a journal, write to author a book, or even write lyrics for music, or even write as a profession.

So let’s have some fun learning more about the person and their “craft as a writer.”  My First Guest?  I WELCOME Tony Roberts! An author, blogger, writer, and mental health advocate…

About Tony Roberts:

Tony was born and raised in the Hoosier heartland just south of Indianapolis.

“I grew up worshiping high school basketball and once had the honor of playing in a televised “game of the week.”

I went to Hanover College (alma mater of both Mike Pence and Woody Harrelson – go figure). After many detours into sex, drugs, and more folk rock than roll, I wound up at a seminary and became a pastor. It was then that symptoms of depression and mania culminated in a psychotic episode that became pivotal in my life, for better and for worse. After graduating from Hanover, I obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. While there, I did ministry assignments at a state hospital for persons with developmental disabilities, as well as at a women’s prison, and an inner-city hospital.

I served two decades as a solo pastor. I then shifted to writing, speaking, and leading small groups. In March of 2014, I published my spiritual memoir, Delight in Disorder: Ministry, Madness, Mission. Having served in pastoral ministry and gone mad, it’s now my mission to bridge the gap between faith communities and the mental health world.

I now live to write and write to live in Rochester, New York. I also have a “delightful domain” on Lake Caroga, the gateway to the Adirondacks.  My greatest earthly delights are my four children and two grandchildren.

Tony is also an author of his book; “Delight In Disorder” available now on Amazon and Amazon Kindle store online.

“What makes Tony’s devotional so compelling is that bipolar disorder continues to periodically beat the crap out of him, and he still believes.”

– David Zucker, Mental Health Advocate, University Presbyterian in Seattle.

“A Writer Interview With Tony Roberts”

Hello and welcome to Cat Lyon’s Reading & Writing Den, New Writer Interviews.
My name Catherine Lyon, Author…  Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?

Tell us your name and a little of what you do?

Tony Roberts. I am the author of Delight in Disorder: Ministry, Madness, Mission and the co-founder of Delight in Disorder Missions. I write, speak, and facilitate small groups with the aim to build hope and foster compassion for those with mental illness, like me.

Where are you from?

I was born and bred in Indiana, where I now live. I spent much of my pastoral career in Upstate New York.

Tell us more about you? Like your education, family life. Etc.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and theology from Hanover College and a Masters of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary.

I am blessed to have four children (ages 25, 23, 16, 13) and two grandchildren who are the delight of my life. My birth family means a great deal to me. We live close and care for each other.

Do you have any latest news?

My blog, delightindisorder.org is growing. I will be featured in an upcoming issue of bp magazine. Plans are underway to develop a podcast with commentary as well as interviews with persons in the faith community and mental health fields.

Are you a writer?

Yes. Writing is my vocation.

When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve written in various forms since I was 7. My first piece, “Ode to My Pet Rock,” was a hit in my family. I wrote satirical stories in high school, college, and seminary. I wrote over 100 articles for school newspapers. I studied Creative Writing and penned a novella called, Life (in obvious places).

Why? For the same reason as Isaac Asimov. “I write for the same reason I breathe – because if I didn’t, I would die.”

What inspired you to write your first book?

It started out primarily as therapy. I had lost much of my memory and I had lapsed in my practice of reflecting on Scripture. This was a way of reclaiming both. I’ve been told that if we first write for ourselves, others will need to read what we write.

How did you come up with the title?

“Delight in Disorder” is a 17th-century poem by Robert Herrick about a dress that is beautiful in its imperfection. The subtitle (Ministry, Madness, Mission) was given to me by a friend when I described the stages of my pastoral life.

Do you have a specific writing style?

No. Sometimes I jot down notes. Sometimes I sketch outlines. Sometimes I start with a Scripture quote, sometimes I weave it in. Sometimes I move right to the word processor and edit as I go.  If there is one “style” is have is a commitment to editing.

~Paul Velery once wrote, “A poem is never finished, only abandoned.” I believe this about any writing. When I read my published work I cringe, knowing I could have spent more time on it.

How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

All my writing is based on my own life.

To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

My memoir only required introspection. I could sit in my basement and stare at brick walls, which I often did.

My current writing is more collaborative. I have traveled various places to meet faith and mental health care advocates and learn more what is going on and how we can improve.

Who designed the covers?

Nicole Miller of Miller Media Solutions.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I want people to read my memoir and find hope in Christ for those with troubled minds.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer?

Tim Keller is currently on my memoir. Favorite all-time would be Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Outside of family members, name one person that supported your commitment to becoming a published author?

Leanne Sype, my editor.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I’m always thinking of changing I would have liked to make. But I now see I’ve given birth to it, it has a life of its own.

Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learned many things — some brought me joy; others, sorrow. The biggest thing, I learned, though, is I can delight in the One who delights in me.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

How about Russell Crowe? He makes a pretty good tortured soul.

Any advice for other writers?

Read. Write. Walk. Repeat.

Share one thing about you that will surprise readers?

In college, I was given my first tour by Mike Pence and later partied with Woody Harrelson.

Will you write another book?

Probably. Right now I am focused on electronic media, but I will likely get back to my first love eventually.

What are you reading now?

Nobody Cares About Crazy People by Ron Powers.

Do you remember the first book you read?

Bible story books from my grandmother’s house.

Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Singer/songwriter John Prine because he is the best storyteller I know.

Do you have any hobbies? Cooking.

Favorite Music?

Americana: John Prine, Iris Dement, Jason Isbell, Zoe Muth, …

Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Listen to music. Cook. Share stories with friends and family.

What do you want to be written on your headstone as part of your Legacy?

“He delighted in the One who delights in us.”

Welcome Talented Song-Writer And Performer, “Rhoda Joy”!

Hello Friends and Welcome New Visitors,

You are all in for a “Beautiful Treat” today! I have the pleasure of sharing with you a “Voice from Heaven” as I Welcome my “Special Blog Guest” and sweet friend, “RHODA JOY”!
.
RhodaJoy_slider4_D2
.
Rhoda and I met through “Twitter” a long while ago, and not to sound “creepy” but I have followed her ever since. I always keep an eye open when she TWEETS a “New Song link” on her You tube, so I can go take a peek and a listen. I also know she is as beautiful inside as she is on the outside!
“Praise The Lord” that God gave her a “Gift” and a blessing of an “Angelic Voice”…..
You can visit Rhoda Joy on her wonderful website for yourself, http://rhodajoy.com
and see just how “talented” of a song writer and performer she really is! Here is a little more about her….
.
An independent classically inspired Pop singer/songwriter, Rhoda Joy performs her music with a voice that is elegant and powerful. Her stirring and soaring vocals combine the range and command of Amy Lee from Evanescence, lyrical and elegant qualities of Anne Haslam of Renaissance, with the emotional expression that compares to Leona Lewis.

In her dramatic style of writing lyrics and music, one hears her Soul’s vulnerable, raw emotions. For the listener, it generates a surround-sound of deep feelings that allows for the listener to connect to their own heart-felt emotions. “I create music that heals, connects you to yourself, and reminds you of an awareness of who you are,” says Rhoda Joy…

“LET IT BE – THE BEATLES” (RHODA JOY -…

“Now I just happened to go listen and watch her video for the “Cover” she did of “The Beatles” classic song, “Let It Be,” and you really need to go take a look yourself! *Fantastic*! Here is a little from her website’s blog on how she did the cover on this song”….
.

My version of “Let It Be” is somewhat of a melodic departure from the original Beatles’ version. It’s diffucult to fully describe the creative process that I utilized to create my “original version”; but singing a cover song involves integrating a vocal signature sound and musical flavors, re-imaging the song and singing it in a way, as if I had written it myself!

“The pacing of this re-take is refreshing;
her voice breathing new life and meaning into the lyrics.
Rhoda Joy shares this song in a way that pierces the soul as
she re-captures the clear intent of the original song;
inspiring, touching, comforting, and soothing…
With the chords, the lyrics, the acoustics and her voice
delivering this fresh new version,
‘Let It Be’ has a new heartbeat.”

I have eclectic musical influences, combining my love for and study of classical and pop music, merging and weaving my interpretation of ‘Let It Be’, encompassing the contrasting yet overlapping styles of classical and pop. I drew on all my musical background and training for the musical arrangement of ‘Let It Be’. Whatever “grabs” and moves me int the moment is what comes out in the arrangement and recording of a song. If I can bring in different elements that are tastefully done, work musically, and emotionally sing from my heart, the song and message will sound believable to other people. If a song touches a person’s soul in an honest way, that’s the most important thing an artist can do! Music is a very emotional form of communication.

“Showcasing her etherial performance, as she intimately intertwines her musical skill and ability with the artful backdrop of nature, Rhoda Joy will delight you, inspire you, and she will deliver!”

“Now I  ONLY ask TWO questions of all my “Blog Guests,” and here are the two I asked my good friend Rhoda, and here is how creatively she answered them”!
.
1.) How did you become a songwriter and performer?
The answer to this question is an evolution of myself as a person and as a performer. My love affair with music began at age 5, taking piano and voice lessons for 8 years, and attending The Academy of Performing Arts in Ontario, CA, post high school graduation. I performed in multiple choirs and participated in the production of 2 albums with my church choir, as well as entertained audiences in schools, churches, special occasions, and special events.
.
However, once I returned home from Canada, I decided to attend college to become a physical therapist, and all my creative pursuits and talents were lingering in the background. After listening to my soul whispers over a period of 10 years, I finally listened to my intuition and accessed all the courage I possessed to abandon all fears of the unknown at the door and pursue a different pathway. Physical therapy did not allow me to live the creative expression my soul craved, and I decided to listen to my heart’s voice, empower myself, and return to school to become a board-certified music therapist.
.
However, working to support myself during my pursuit of a music degree, I endured a tragic accident, which left me in intense physical and emotional pain for 7 years. I broke my neck and my back, and during that time, I lost my ability to sit, stand, sing, walk, and talk.

During a time where I could do nothing but solely listen to the voice within, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I had to pursue my love of singing and songwriting. As I physically began to improve and heal, I began to fully embrace and intensely go after my love of music and creativity, with full expression of my entire being!
.

2.) What’s the most exciting thing that has happened in your journey of music?
I have had the privilege of studying under Cari Cole and glean insider information about the music industry and vocal techniques, and I have also had the privilege of working with a vocal coach trained by Seth Riggs. If you are unfamiliar with these names, both vocal coaches have a long list of many famous/star clientele!
.
Presently, the most exciting thing for me is coaching others to write songs they have always dreamed of writing, and writing and rehearsing for my debut album.

“I can’t wait to share my own original work with the world”!
.
