Editorial Review:
By Author, Ronald E. Yates was a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and Professor Emeritus of Journalism at the University of Illinois.

REVIEW:

“Two crafty septuagenarian widows turned private investigators; a crabby Atlanta cop recovering from a gunshot wound; and a cunning killer who dumps his victims rather appropriately in cemeteries. Those are just a few of the zesty ingredients in Murder among the Tombstones, the latest whodunit by Georgia-based mystery writer Kim Carter. It’s a fast-paced, twister of a mystery that keeps you turning pages until the very end. Readers are going to Rave about this one!”

“LYON BOOK & SOCIAL MEDIA PROMOTIONS”

Authors, Meet Shawn and R.J. From Book Marketing Tools. A Must Website for Authors.

Ok authors, do you know about Book Marketing Tools?
They are a must for all authors to go join free and sign up for their newsletter. Why?
Because it has fantastic book marketing article like this one I am about to share.

.

Book Marketing Tools

.
Now I have known these two guys of ‘Book Marketing Tools’ for a couple years now. Shawn and R.J. have even invited me on a regular basis to write articles and share some the “magic” of book promotions with their readers. Well, they actually invite many to write articles to share on their site as they both have “Big Hearts” and genuinely care about helping authors succeed in selling and promoting their books and teaching them how to do it.

They also have many excellent tools to help authors in submitting their books on many book sites. Like the E-book submission tool. Fill out one form and your e-book gets listed on a big amount of book promo sites. Now that is a time saver!!

So, if you haven’t yet visited and signed up for their newsletter, I highly recommend you do so today right here Book Marketing Tools.  Now let’s see what they have to share with us today about book reviews. Enjoy!

Authors,
we hope your week has gotten off to a positive start!

Recently, self-published author Jennifer-Crystal Johnson wrote a guest blog post for Book Marketing Tools entitled “How to Handle Negative Book Reviews.” In her piece, she really cut to the core of what it feels like to receive a negative review for something that you’ve spent so much time and effort creating. It sucks! But the way you handle negative reviews can set the stage for some real, significant growth as a self-published author.

But what about positive reviews?

Should you just take them for granted?

What, if anything, should you do to maximize your favorable book reviews?

As it turns out, not all authors know how to handle good reviews. Thankfully, if you’re a writer who isn’t sure what to do when the raves start coming in for your latest book, we have some great tips!

3 Tips for Maximizing Your Positive Book Reviews

Tip #1 — Be Grateful!

Whenever possible, reach out to your positive reviewers to say, “thanks,” whether they are friends, family members or complete strangers who stumbled across your book.

As a self-published author, you are running a business. And business is all about relationships. The more you can cultivate positive relationships with people who love your books, the more successful you’ll be in your career as an author.

To write a review takes time and thoughtfulness, so if you’re getting good reviews of your work, it means that people are really connecting with your writing. As an author, there really isn’t a better feeling, so be sure to show your appreciation!

Tip #2 — Start a Collection

Chances are, if you get one good review, you’ll probably get several. Keep a list of your good reviews so you can link to them, post them on your author website or pull quotes from them.

A selection of positive reviews can also be the subject of a “What Readers Are Saying” email to the people on your list.

It’s also good to have easy access to your positive reviews for those times when you’re not feeling so hot about your ability to put words on the page — who doesn’t need a confidence boost from time to time?

Tip #3 — Reflect on What You’re Doing Right

You probably have a pretty strong sense of your strengths as an author, but good reviews can reveal some things about your writing that you may not have even considered. Negative reviews can challenge you to face your flaws, but good reviews can uncover hidden strengths that you can cultivate for your future writings.

For example, maybe you’ve never thought of yourself as a gifted dialogue writer — perhaps your focus has been on plot and narrative — so when reviews appear that show appreciation for the ways in which your characters speak, it’s a chance to take notice of a talent you might not have known you have!

Good reviews give you the opportunity to reflect on and respond to the aspects of your books that really resonate with readers, which can only help you grow as you continue your journey as a self-published author.

Self-Publishing in the News: How an Airline Changed One Indie Author’s Life

If you’re a self-published author, you’ve got to be open to opportunities no matter where they might come from. And you need to be able to think outside of the box when it comes to getting your books in the hands of readers.

Indie author Stephen Holmes created The Great Hot Air Balloon Adventure as a bedtime story for his daughters. When one of his children suggested that he publish the story and turn it into a book, he realized he had the opportunity to do something special.

The amazing part of the story is that Holmes — on a whim — decided that he might have a shot at making some new fans by sending the book to Virgin Atlantic Airlines. Well, the right people at the airline loved the book, and they promptly ordered 2,000 copies to be given away during night flights to parents and their children.

In addition to the initial order, Holmes is sure to make many more new fans!

One important takeaway: because Holmes wrote and published the book himself, he was able to get the ball rolling and catch the interest of the airline in a matter of days! Would this be possible in the traditional publishing world? Maybe, but it doesn’t seem likely.

Check out the full story on The Guardian website!

Have a wonderful week, authors!

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written?

I am a retired librarian indulging my long-held dream of writing novels. I live in beautiful Southern Oregon with my little dog in the country. I have two published books,” Split Second” is a psychological thriller mystery novel and ‘Finding Faith.” Both of these books center around relationships and family, redefining or broadening the definition of ‘family’ with some twists and excitement.

I am currently at work on my third novel, “Willa.”  It will follow the same general theme but is a total departure from the first two works; “Finding Faith”  and  “Split Second.”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

My most recently published book is “Finding Faith.” It was inspired by my own life experiences and those of people close to me. It looks at the question of appropriate care of the elderly from a fictional setting. I’m certain that my inspirations for this work were my own advancing age, the experiences I have had with the elderly, both in my family and my work, and our social norms.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?

Probably not so unusual, but I tend to write copiously when an inspiration hits me and then will let a day or two go by without getting anything written. During this time I’m mulling over the theme, characters, direction and possible outcomes of the tale, and allowing them to prepare me for next time I commit to writing it down.

What authors or books have influenced you?

Almost all of them. I have been a copious reader since I first discovered that those strange squiggly marks in a book represented words. The authors who inspire me have changed over the years but I still hold onto some of the earliest memories and use them when appropriate. Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorites, both for her story-telling skill and her engagement with causes.

What are you working on now?

My next novel, working title ‘Willa’, will again be about family and about strong women. The question I ask myself about strong women is “How do we moderate between our own ego and need to be self-assertive and the needs of those who enter our circle of life?” Are our own egos paramount or is nurturing others more important? Do we have a responsibility to sacrifice our egos to those entrusted into our care? What happens when our needs and the needs of others clash?

FindingFaithSplitSecondCovers.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?

My best method is my publicist/book promoter Catherine Lyon of Lyon Book Promotions here, having waited so long to begin this new career, I find myself outdated in terms of electronic communication and she has ably taken on that role for me. She does a great job promoting my books throughout social media, book and readers websites, and even made and released Press Releases for me for the new novel. She can do it all and runs her business as a one-woman show. Don’t know how she does it! Lol. But she is good. Additionally, I blog, belong to a local authors group, attend book fairs throughout the state, and do book signings at a local independent bookstore. All of these work together.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Don’t give up!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

Keep refining your craft. The first book may be okay, the second should be better, the third should be even better, and the next will be exactly what you dreamed it would be!

What are you reading now?

I always have several books going at the same time. I’m reading a biography of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, an inspirational book on tweaking life in small increments, a novel about the inquisition in Spain, children’s books to add to my Little Free Library, and a book on the craft of writing.

What’s next for you as a writer?

Not sure. Just starting out on my current title and will be focusing on that for a rather long time. I would love to write a children’s book and may try that next.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would have to have my whole library with me; could never limit it to 3 or 4 books.

‘Lyon Books Promotions’ Presents Book Review Shares For Author, Ronald E. Yates and His Trilogy Series, “Finding Billy Battles.” Because The Trilogy Is Just That Good!

.

Author Ronald E. YatesPresents(1) (1)
.

REVIEW by Apex Book Reviews  ~ Official Apex Reviews Rating: * * * * *

The second volume in the Finding Billy Battles trilogy, The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles picks up right where its predecessor left off. This time, author Ronald Yates’ intrepid protagonist finds himself on a steamship en route to the Far East, trying to assuage the pain of losing his beloved wife. It isn’t long before Billy is immersed in a tumultuous world of action, adventure, and danger, all set against the backdrop of ever-unfolding cultural and political events.

Featuring superb plot and character development, the most salient aspect of Yates’ tale is his inimitable storytelling style. Though he’s chosen late 19th century Asia as the subject of his latest offering, one gets the sense Yates could write about any number of different topics with the same compelling skill, and the result would be the same: a rich, eye-opening yarn that proves impossible to put down. In an era where the average attention span is as long as the next Snapchat video, this ability is a rare trait and indicative of true literary talent.

Rife with eye-opening action and engrossing details, The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles treats the reader to the highly intriguing travels of a seasoned journeyman. Highly Recommended.

My Three Years Blogging On WordPress? FABULOUS!

HELLO RECOVERY FRIENDS AND WELCOME ALL!

.

065.JPG

Happy Anniversary Catherine on WordPress.com!!!

You registered on WordPress.com 3 years ago. Thanks for flying with us.
Keep up the good blogging.

3 Year Anniversary Achievement
.

So, it has been 3 years ago today that I started this little thing called “Blogging.”

All I wanted to do was continue my recovery journey with others who may be suffering from gambling addiction like had. It was my way of sharing and continuing my recovery journey from my book titled,  “Addicted To Dimes, Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat.”

It was MY way to advocate, raise awareness, and inform the public about the dangers and devastation of this addiction, of this cunning disease. But when I started out I had no idea how others would take my blog about gambling addiction. There were very few blogs here on WordPress about addiction and recovery that I could find, and I was scared if people would “judge me?” I figured, “what the hell,” my whole life is out in the world in book form, so I had no secrets anymore.
.
recovery pic
.

I felt it deep within my heart and my faith that it was the right thing to do. To blog and advocate about this awful addiction and see what kind of feedback I would get. I can honestly say, everyone in the past three years that have come followed my blog here and left comments have been mostly Spectacular! The WordPress community embraced me with open arms, open hearts, and understanding. So, what more could I ask for?

Well, I will tell you. Currently, my recovery community is at 7,414 followers and my visitor count as of today is 34,964 Visits! SO, in the words of “Sally Fields at The Oscars? They Love Me! They really, really love me!!” LOL …

Now, of course, I am NOT that vain, but I feel that my recovery blog here on WordPress is an important blog. Again, there are many recovery blogs here on WP, but very few are about Recovery from Gambling Addiction …

As the first year or so went on, I finally also opened up and shared here on my WordPress blog about my mental health challenges as I am “dual diagnosed,”  meaning I live in recovery from addiction and battle mental health challenges. I was getting tired of reading about how STIGMA was hurting and holding back many from seeking treatment for mental health issues. Not to mention all the news reports of mass shootings that were happening all over the US. So I decided to step out of the shadows of shame for having mental/emotional disorders and challenges. And again? My WordPress community embraced me once more.

.

.
Again, I wanted full disclosure as to my mental health so I could advocate that there is no shame in being diagnosed with mental health illness. Be it mental or medical, it is time for those who don’t suffer have more empathy and understanding of what is like living with mental and emotional disorders. It can for many be very debilitating and painful.

So we don’t need to add more in the mix by having to include shame, embarrassment, or stigma, to make those who suffer feel worse. I always say, “kindness is a choice” and takes much less energy than HATE. Because sadly, those who don’t understand or even want to, and there are many, need to back off  ….

So many recovery blessings have happened here while I have been blogging here on WordPress! After my book released, so many awesome things have come. Too many to list, but a few are:

.
A Four Part Article Interview about my me on MyAddiction.com: My Gambling Story & Recovery

.

Now year two here on WordPress was a growth year as I took on the world by storm with a new venture into  Lyon Book & Social Media Promotions here on WordPress!

.

“Sharing The Magic Of Written Words Within Your Books!”

.

And what a year it was! My little online bookstore and promotions business keep growing and growing. I now have over 17 authors I book promote for and more on the way! So drop by my book promo blog here on WP above and come meet your new book!

I offer a little something different from other book promotions. I enjoy helping and teaching authors how and where they need to promote their fabulous books. I do all the social media legwork for them by setting up authors social media accounts, add their books to many free book sites for exposure to large readerships.

We also have loads of good things for readers too like books reviews, excellent new book releases, and author spotlights so readers learn more about our fine authors I promote. Let’s face it, many of us brand new authors are not always computer savvy, and navigating the inner works of social media sites to sign up maybe intimating to some authors  …

So I do that and much more for affordable pricing that won’t “break the bank.”
And WordPress gave me everything I needed to get my new book promotions blog up and going by using all the free services they have here. So I would never host my blogs anywhere else!

So I will wrap up this WordPress Celebratory Anniversary post by saying a very Big Thank You to WordPress and to all my WP friends, family, followers, and all new visitors!!
Thank you for making my 3 years here on WordPress Special …

CHEERS!
