There have been many notable changes in the publishing industry over the last several years, from the steady rise of audiobook sales to the introduction of AI technology in book production.

A global pandemic and calls for more diverse representation shook things up in 2020 and 2021, so what’s in store for 2022?

We’ve analyzed some of the most prominent trends based on recent studies and our own data and observations to get a feel for what’s to come in the year ahead.

Here are 6 key publishing trends and predictions to look out for in 2022.

1. BookTok is a marketing must-have.

In 2021, TikTok became one of the fastest-growing social media platforms and an essential tool for branding and marketing. The publishing industry also caught on, with many authors and publishers turning to TikTok to grow their audiences.

Following in the path of “Bookstagram,” BookTok appears to be here to stay, with all trends indicating that even more authors will join the platform to market their books in 2022. So far, the hashtag #BookTok has garnered over 34.7 billion views on the platform.

We’ve seen the impact of BookTok firsthand with one of our own authors, Maclen Stanley, who has accumulated over 424,000 followers and 6 million likes in just a few months since his book The Law Says What? debuted in July. Many reviewers on Amazon have commented that they bought the book specifically because they enjoyed his related TikTok videos.

Book reviewers have also taken to the platform to share their thoughts on new books in short, easily-shared video clips, making them an influential force that authors and publishers cannot afford to ignore in 2022. To learn more about how TikTok can help you grow your platform, check out our post on TikTok marketing for authors.

2. Audiobook sales will keep growing.

Although they’re still nowhere near topping print, audio, and ebook sales have been steadily rising for the past decade or so, with the audiobook industry, in particular, seeing rapid expansion.

One major development from 2021 was Spotify’s acquisition of Findaway, which likely indicates Spotify’s intent to give more focus to audiobooks, in addition to their current library of music and podcasts. Storytel also acquired Audiobooks.com, so there are now multiple players on the expanding audiobook field.

As we watch these companies implement their growth plans in 2022, audiobook sales are likely to continue their steady increase. Authors and publishers will want to keep their eye on these new and emerging opportunities to market their audiobooks.

As for the industry itself, there are a number of developments that will make audiobook production easier and faster, including rapid technological developments like AI narration.

3. AI will expand its influence.

Speaking of AI, it’s already being used to write fiction that improves almost daily. While it’s far from replacing human creativity, AI can help content creators find inspiration, retrieve facts, and outline their writing.

Of course, you’ve probably already used AI to improve your writing in some form or another—for example, if you’ve ever used a proofreading tool like Grammarly.

But publishers can also use the technology for plagiarism checks, editing, translations, SEO, and marketing. For example, if you’ve ever gotten a newsletter email with content recommendations that match your interests, you can thank AI for that.

Think of AI as publishing’s virtual assistant, and one that will prove increasingly helpful in the years to come.

4. Book prices will increase.

Inflation has caused the prices of many goods and services to rise over the past year, and it looks like book prices will be no exception.

IngramSpark already announced price changes that took effect on November 6, 2021, raising their print pricing by up to 6% in the US.

In a public service announcement to its members, the company explained that the changes are a result of “several cost increases for consumables, such as paper and packaging materials, as well as an increase in the cost of labor.”

So since the cost of producing books has risen, so too will their prices.

And on top of growing costs, there’s also a book shortage. As this Vox article explains, back in 2008, the world expected print books to become obsolete after the rise of the ebook, so many companies invested less in printing books.

But instead, the demand for print books has steadily increased (after experiencing a brief drop in 2008), and printers have not kept up.

The silver lining is that with book prices on the rise for both print and digital formats, special, limited-time promos like Kindle Countdown Deals could prove more appealing, allowing readers to benefit from discounts while authors can sell more books in a short period…

5. Serialized storytelling will continue to flourish.

Serialized fiction on platforms like Wattpad is nothing new, but there are more options than ever for both writers and readers of serials.

Amazon’s Kindle Vella rolled out last year, adding another prominent player to the serialized fiction field.

Some authors are finding serial fiction to be a more reliable monetization strategy than traditional publishing. Self-published authors in particular will benefit from this development, as they’re more likely than traditionally published authors to experiment with these platforms.

Sites like Wattpad, Kindle Vella, Inkitt, Tapas, Radish, and other online reading apps will continue to flourish as more authors experiment with different formats.

6. Calls for diversity will persist.

Calls for more diversity and representation in literature have grown stronger in recent years, and with all the work still left to do, it’s likely that those calls will persist.

In 2020, a study found that just 5% of children’s books published in the UK that year featured a main character who was Black or Asian (that’s actually an increase from 1% in 2017).

Meanwhile, in the US, children’s books featuring racially diverse characters or subjects grew slightly from 29% to 30% between 2019 and 2020.

Since it can take several years for a children’s book to be produced, we can hope to see more of the effects of 2020 and 2021’s intensified calls for diversity in 2022.

And it’s not just children’s books that need more diverse voices—according to a 2019 study, 85% of the people who acquire and edit books for the Big Five are white. This means that the people who decide what gets published by the Big Five, and how the final products turn out, are overwhelmingly white.

One way that publishers have begun to address this issue is by hiring editors tasked with recruiting more minority talent and also enlisting the help of sensitivity readers.

Is Publishing a Dying Industry?

The publishing industry is far from dying; in fact, print books rose 8.9% in 2021 over 2020.

And rather than hurting business, the Covid-19 pandemic actually saw many positive developments and increased book sales in 2020—a silver lining in an otherwise dark year for many.

Regardless of trends, there’s no better time than the present to finally write your book, or apply for that publishing job you’ve been eyeing.

Everyone loves a good story, so while their formats and production may change, books and publishing are here to stay.

Special Article: Clearing the Confusion of KDP Select, Kindle Unlimted, The Global Fund, & KENP Page Reads. They All Enhance Each Other!

I came across a fantastic blog post by Author Dan Tortora that explained the KDP Select program for authors who self-publish their ebooks through KDP publishing and sell on Amazon. He shares how it all works with KDP and Kindle Unlimited and how they enhance each other when you enroll your ebook in KDP Select, and the Kindle Unlimited program for readers, (ebooks only, not paperbacks) will entitle the author to royalties of their page reads.

Those pages read when enrolled and with KU get the author paid from the Amazon Global Fund. It’s like extra sweetness to your royalties from not only your ebooks sold, but when a reader reads any of the pages of your ebook that is enrolled!

It really is that simple. Yes, you can only sell your ebook “exclusive” through Amazon, but the trade-off can be very profitable for the author. I hope what Dan shares within his article clears up any confusion or hesitations by authors when self-publishing your next ebook.

KDP Direct Publishing & Amazon

AMAZON KDP SELECT PROGRAM GLOBAL FUND (USA) ~ Article From Author Dan Tortora and Coaching – What is the KDP Select and the Global Fund Payout? How does the KDP Select Global Fund work?

As a nonfiction author coach who helps authors publish and market their books, I often get questions about this subject.

This information is for authors on Amazon.com (USA). Scroll down to learn more.

If you’re an author with an ebook available on Kindle Unlimited, receive payouts for the total number of pages of your book that Kindle Unlimited members read during each month.

You must be enrolled in KDP Select to qualify for these payments, making your book “exclusive” to Amazon and available through Kindle Unlimited. When a Kindle Unlimited member reads your book, you get paid for every page they read. (See this link for more on payments and the payment schedule.)

These payments will be in addition to the self-publishing royalties you receive from Amazon when your book is purchased on Amazon.com.

There is a 60-day lag between the end of the month and the time you get your payout.

How much does KDP pay per page read? How much is the monthly payout and how has it varied over time?

The author payout to US authors has ranged from roughly $0.0040 to $0.0050 per page read, or $0.40 to $0.50 per 100 pages read.

Here is a graph of the KDP Select Global Author Fund Payout, per page read, for US-based authors on Amazon.com, from July 2015 through September 2021:

How is the payout determined?

The payout comes from the Kindle Select Global Author Fund (AKA the Kindle Select Global Fund). The fund is based on the subscription fees paid by the total number of Kindle Unlimited members. As KU members join or drop off the Global Fund changes. As Amazon explains, authors receive payouts for the previous month’s page-reads of their book(s).

Those payouts vary based on their home country; “the share of fund allocated to each country varies based on several factors, such as exchange rates, customer reading behavior, and local subscription pricing. Author earnings are then determined by their share of total pages read, up to a total of 3,000 pages per customer per title.” (For more explanation, see “Royalties in Kindle Unlimited.”)

Where is the payout posted?

KDP Select authors can see the previous month’s payout while logged in to KDP in their Prior Month’s Royalty Report. Written Word Media (the book promotion company that runs FreeBooksy and Bargain Booksy) also posts the KDP Global Fund monthly payouts on its website.

Is your book enrolled in KDP Select? If so, what has your experience been with it and with the payouts?

Thanks for reading,
Dan

Cat’s Note: I wanted to add how KDP describes the benefits of KDP Select, KU, and why it’s popular, and it is in reference only to your Ebooks. The program is not available for print books. I hope those authors who visit and read this post find this information helpful.

Meet Zoe The Bark to Writing Yorkie Princess!

This Cat thought she had seen it all from many of our fantastic authors we enjoy working with when it comes to writing. I can now admit I have learned that doggies can WRITE! As a writer, our newest author, Barb Daniels Dena, possesses a “Magical” weapon when she writes her short stories. Her name is Princess Zoe.

Zoe not only helps Barbara write her books, but she is a publisher too! With Ms. Dena’s new release titled “For the Soul,” about livin’ life with raising children, quilts, doggies, and even some of grandma’s buttons, Zoe barks a few sentences here and there to remind the author to add a distant memory or two she may have missed.

Barb and Zoe’s collection of short stories delight readers worldwide and receive rave reviews and a few barks of the “tall tails” in her first published works. Cat caught up with both of them, and here is a little of what they wanted to share with Cat’s Readers.

Cat hopes you enjoy reading their interview first seen on Book Goodies Site. ✨📘📚🖊✏🐕🐾

“For the Soul: A Delightful Collection of Shorts”

CATS New Interview With Best-Selling Authors Barbara and Princess Yorkie Zoe!

About Author Barbara Daniels-Dena:
Barbara Daniels Dena is a new indie author with her eclectic book debut of “For the Soul: A Collection of Short Stories,” released in August 2021. Almost a memoir, this unique collection of inspiring stories of ‘good ole fashioned living,’ along with many of her past and present memories and life experiences that tugs on the heart, warming stories, and fictional tall tails delighting readers worldwide. The book is available now for purchase on Amazon Books, Amazon Kindle, and many fine online book sites.

Barbara began writing at an early age as a lover of “Make-Believe.” Today, her writing has developed from memories of family experiences, various compilations of events in her life, and her love of animals. She is willing to admit her vivid imagination plays a role in her stories.

The author is an Illinois native who has lived in many places; as Barb says, like a free-spirited “Gypsy,” she has lived and worked in Illinois, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, but Ultimately, she came home and settled back in the Quad Cities area.

Barbara is a proud mother of two grown children. She was a business owner of a Temp Agency, then transitioned into her passion for floral design, owned and ran several floral shops. Her favorite flower is the “Casablanca Lily.” Her favorite color is Red, and when she isn’t writing, Barbara spends her free time oil painting, enjoys quilting, knitting, and reading.

Her favorite book? “Death Be Not Proud” by John J. Gunther. Her first love is and always will be playing with her fur baby, a little Yorkie named Zoe. She continues to write from her cozy nook as she gazes over a pond full of geese and ducks. On many days it is more gazing than writing.

What inspires you to write?
The world around me. I watch people and animals. I am always on the lookout and continually ask myself, “what if?” and I go from there. I enjoy entertaining myself with the scenes I develop in my mind.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
My bookshelf is filled with my current favorite authors, and all are indie authors and are on Amazon.
My list is eclectic and varied and covers many genres.
Diane Olsen, without a doubt, is at the top of my list.
J. Schlenker
Dave Lager
Mark Nolan
Anne Fifield
Mary Kingsford
Dana Brown
Violet Patton

Tell us about your writing process.
Once I have an idea in mind, I scribble; no matter where I am, I scribble a note, a setting, a conversation, a character’s name, or a trait. I admit I’m a “pant-ser.” I write by the seat of my pants. I am not a plotter. I do not plot out my stories. They evolve.

I write a little every day with my Yorkie sitting on her pillow in my lap. She will be the first to tell anyone who will pay attention that she is the writer. I only listen and put her words into the computer.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, of course, I do. They’re my imaginary friends. They guide me on the path of my storytelling. I talk to them all the time—their opinion matters.

What advice would you give other writers?
Take writing classes. Offer to swap Beta reading with other authors. Read as many books as possible. This way, you will see the good and the bad in writing. And write something every day; a paragraph or two is still writing. Do not throw away the stuff you don’t like. Save it. One day you will pull it from the shelf and either see the errors or find it wasn’t so bad after all.

Do not have family/friends critique your work. They love you. Their words will always be filled with praise. Persevere.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
So many friends urged me to publish my stories, so I did. I self-published under my doggie, Zoe’s name.
“Magical Zoe Publishing.”

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
There is no doubt in my mind that indie publishing is the wave of the future. The big houses will remain for the ultra-famous writers, but with the influx of people who want to write, whether they will be famous or not, indie publishing is the way it will go.

What genres do you write?: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Memoirish in Short Stories

What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print

About The Author

Anne Fifield is the creative visionary and best-selling children’s author of “The Princess Caroline’s Adventures” book series. Written for ages 7 to 12 and the young at heart, she is delighting kids worldwide. Her books are unique as she weaves in the elements of her rescued doggies, specifically basset hounds, into each of her stories and book covers.

Her first titled ‘The Princess’ Hand’ was released in August 2019, book two titled ‘Trip to Lake Ahrooo’ released in September 2020, book three followed in November 2020 with ‘The Hunt for the Jeweled Swords,’ and book four newly released in August 2021 titled ‘The Missing Knight.’ All are available on Amazon Books, Amazon Kindle, & many fine online book sites.

Anne is the youngest of three siblings and was born and raised outside Oklahoma City, OK. She met and married the love of her life, Tom, and they have been married for 24+years. Their kids are the four-legged variety who had adopted them over the years.

Anne’s career was also her passion. She was an ‘American Sign Language Interpreter’ for over 25-years and taught ASL at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Since both were her passions, she says she felt like she never worked a day in her life. In 2006, she became heavily involved in basset rescue and co-founded another one in 2011.

Anne, now retired, decided to move on to her next passion, the love of writing. She and her husband have rescued and fostered basset hounds for 20-years, so as Anne shares, “it felt natural to write children’s books with bassets as the characters. Our hounds provide the comic antics and inspiration for all my books. Thus, “Princess Caroline’s Adventures Series was born.” All the characters in her books are actual rescue dogs. Their pictures are on the back of each book.

Anne and her husband enjoy retired life and reside in the ‘Great State of Texas.’

“The Bassets are at it again and this book is as good as royal gold when it comes to an old fashioned medieval mystery. Except the characters are all dogs, mostly Basset hounds to be precise led by their fearless….most of the time…leader Princess Caroline. Even though these are middle school novels, I enjoy reading them as they tickle my funny bone imagining the situations the dogs find themselves in. Plus we are able to see the pictures of the real dogs after whom the characters are named. Look in the back of the book”…
