Changing Poor Habits & Behaviors Now! Guest Author Interview With Life Coach Maureen Scanlon Shares How…

….

Guest Author Interview By Voyage Phoenix

Voyage Phoenix we’d like to introduce you to Life Coach and Author, Maureen Scanlon.

Maureen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

Just like everyone else, I’ve made some bad choices and decisions that I now know were learning lessons to allow me to be who I am today. I was married at 18, a mother at 19 and found myself in another country away from friends and family. I had chosen a difficult path as I was then alone with a husband in the military and in a domestic violence marriage with an alcoholic. I figured I had “no choice” but to stick it out. I was raised by parents who believe, “You made your bed, now lie in it.” Through the difficult times, I always knew I was worth more, but I didn’t believe it based on my day to day circumstances.
……
One day, I finally got the courage to divorce my husband and raise three children on my own. Two of my children had struggles, one with ADHD and one with Bipolar Disorder. I had financial struggles, emotional stress, and health issues as I tried to parent alone. I continued to be in relationships that served someone else’s needs and allowed the abuse to continue. I had two bouts of cancer (Cervical and Skin), and I was walking with a cane at one point! Through it all, I would always talk to people about their problems. I loved helping people in spite of my own strife. My children used to call me the “counselor” and send all of their friends to me if they needed some encouragement or help.

……
As my children were finally growing into adults, I decided to take my life back! I realized I needed healing from childhood, marriage, and all of the negative experiences I had incurred. It took two years to figure out my worth and realize I had dreams! I met my twin flame, now husband, Dennis and realized what unconditional love looked like for the first time in my life. While on our honeymoon, I noticed people would always come up and talk to me. I love talking to people, sharing their stories and finding similarities in our lives. This is where I had my epiphany… I would become a Life Coach and help people learn to love themselves as I finally discovered I could!

…….

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

We all have programming from our childhoods and past hurts. The human brain is wired to protect us from pain. The hardest part of beginning this dream was getting out of the comfort zone I had created. I had to fight the fear of the unknown and all of the past beliefs that I’d developed throughout my life. Believing in ourselves is the most challenging thing to do! Am I good enough? Will people want to come to me? Am I too old to start a business? Every day is a new endeavor and I have learned to take baby steps and give myself the mercy and compassion I have for others.
……
I learn from those I coach and teach from the experiences I have had. Sometimes, all they need to hear is “You are amazing, and you are enough!” Life coaching is a new concept, so this is how I explain it when asked what I do. Life coaching is a new approach to figuring out who we are and why we act and react the way we do. I don’t dwell on a client’s past, we touch on it, then move forward with positivity, tools, techniques, and goals to help you achieve happiness and peace.

…….
Maureen Scanlon Life Coaching – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

As I started growing my coaching business, Maureen Scanlon Life Coaching, I took photos for the website. One day, I showed my best friend and she said, “I see this picture on the cover of a book.” I have never aspired to be an author, in fact, I always felt my verbal was much better. But… in following where I was being led in my new journey, I simply said, “I guess I’m writing a book than!”
…..
And I did… in eight weeks to be exact and I had published within four months. “My Dog is More Enlightened Than I Am” came to life as I watched my dogs daily and realized what a beautiful and uncomplicated way they live. They love, have fun, and show compassion in amounts far greater than humans. The book is an inspirational and fun guide to teaching us to live from the example of the unconditional furry friends we share the planet with.
….
The most rewarding part of my business is the feedback and responses I receive. I also create retreats, group coaching, and women’s events. From these events and personal coaching, hearing clients say that I’ve changed their life, they are living their dreams, finding their worth, and breaking lifetime habits is such an incredible feeling!
……
My mission and purpose in this lifetime are the moral behind the Starfish Story. A little boy is walking along the beach throwing starfish into the ocean that had washed ashore. An old man tells the child, there are thousands of them, you’re not going to make much of a difference. To which the little boy tosses another starfish and says to the man, “It mattered to that one.”

…….

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
……
I always felt like I was different from everyone else. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I remember swinging on the swings at 6yrs old and pondering about what my life would be like. I felt I didn’t belong in my family, and that no one really “got me.” I always felt like I was a lot of trouble, and honestly, I sometimes was… I was very aware of how everyone felt and would say or do something funny to make everyone laugh.

“I always felt life should be fun.”

Like This Cat Always Introduces My Dear Friend, Amazing Memorist and Prolific Storyteller, Mr. Joe Siccardi …This post will make you smile…

Don’t read anything into this post or between the lines, but the adventures of the past three months have focused on my mortality. I am hopeful there will be many more years of blogging and sharing, but I’m also cognizant, as a septuagenarian, there is more sand in the bottom of the hourglass than on the top. And only the One who knows how many granules are left is my Lord.

One of the issues I’ve been facing is the legacy I will leave behind. I like to think it will be positive, as reflected in my writing and outreach. Whenever I pen a blog post … or share a message on social media as I do daily … or offer messages of hope {and sometimes with sarcastic humor} to family and friends, I try to focus on the positives and encourage all to look Up. I try to be…

Meet My Dear Friend Marsha Friedman of News & Experts and Now Part of The Family of Advantage Media-Forbes Books. I Learn So Much From Marsha …

…..
Hey Authors?

“CELEBRITIZE Yourself” in The Coming NEW YEAR!

And you can by hiring an expert in the media field and she will do that and so much more! Why am I sharing this? Because I have helped many authors through my years of book promoting and marketing and some have needed to take that Next Step and work with a media marketing firm to get them elevated and noticed more so than my little “book promoting” throughout social media.

And they were serious writers and their books are “just that good” to move on to a higher level of media attention. I am only a “One Woman Show” and when those authors were ready?

The only PR Agency, Marketing, Branding, and Publishing firm I recommend is Marsha of News & Experts now part of The ForbesBooks Family. They do it all for your brand and books through Print, Television, Radio, and even have a Satellite TV Tour for Authors! So make you visit Marsha’s News & Experts Website!

…..
SO, PLEASE, MEET MARSHA FRIEDMAN, As she announces some exciting news from earlier this year and just in time for those authors looking to be elevated in the media and beyond. I have known Marsha since I began book promoting for authors almost 7-years ago and I have learned so much from her.

I look up to her as a mentor, as she’s never been “stingy” lol, when it comes to sharing media tips and advice of her “Magic” she uses to help authors flourish. That’s why I love her dearly.
….
So when you are ready to take a step into the ‘Media Big League?’

I’m excited to share this news with you!

For the past few months, I’ve been in negotiation with Advantage Media Group|Forbes Books, to acquire EMSI.  Finally, we signed the papers and our new company name is now officially News & Experts.

EMSI with its News & Experts division (our face to the media) has been “my baby” ever since I launched it 28 years in 1990. It’s my legacy in a way and it’s always been my desire to build the brand bigger and stronger so our work can positively impact more people.  This acquisition allows the growth and expansion to happen in a way that was truly beyond my wildest dream.

“In 2016, Advantage Media Group partnered with media giant Forbes to create Forbes Books, the first-ever book publishing imprint by Forbes.
As they are a fast-growing authority marketing and publishing company that spans the globe, we’re so proud to be a part of their team and able to contribute to their continued success.”

This marriage makes sense on so many levels.  We’ve been representing Advantage authors to the media for many years and have a proven track record of working well together.  As a result, our relationship is one of great mutual trust and respect, and we share a total commitment to our clients.

I want to assure you that absolutely nothing will change in our relationship with you!  Adam Witty, Founder and CEO of Advantage|Forbes Books, has insisted we continue doing “business as usual.”  Our services remain the same, as do our rates and agreements.  But even more important, all of our team remains the same.  They’re each very excited about the career opportunities and growth potential joining the Advantage Family offers them personally.

As for me, I have no plans to go anywhere for quite a long time – I love what I do too much!

This is truly an exciting time for all of us.

MARSHA’S NEW YEAR 2020 News Letter and Blog Post

Can 2020 Be The Year That Sets You Apart From Your Competition?

New year, new decade, new opportunity to distinguish yourself from your peers!

I always find the approach of New Year’s Day invigorating because it gives us the opportunity to take a step back, review where we’re at in life (and in business), and consider where we want to go.

There’s something magical about Jan. 1. It’s like the world says to us, “You get another chance!”

So, as you take advantage of that “new chance” and make your business plans for 2020, let me remind you of something that might not be at the top of your priorities list, but can differentiate you from your competition, and if leveraged correctly will open the door to greater success.

I’m talking about getting interviewed or quoted in the media. Each time a newspaper reporter turns to you for an insightful quote, or a radio or TV show host interviews you on the air, you are building your brand as an authority in your field.

You can then leverage this media exposure by sharing links to your press coverage on social media, on your website, and in your marketing materials. Potential clients who are trying to decide whether to hire you or your competition across town are going to be impressed that it’s you – not the other guy – who the media turn to for expertise.

But to accomplish that, publicity can’t be an afterthought.

With 2020 nearing its arrival, let me offer three essential steps that will get you started on this journey and keep you focused:

  • Make a decision.  You have to make a conscious decision that this is the year you will go all in and do what’s necessary to promote your personal and company brand. Then (and this is really important!) stick to that decision no matter how many obstacles you encounter. Publicity is tough sledding at times and success isn’t always immediate.

Maybe you craft what you think is a wonderful pitch for a story idea or radio interview segment, but the local newspaper doesn’t bite or the radio show host never replies. Persistence pays off in the long run, and in the process, you’re learning what engages the media’s interest and what doesn’t.

  • Set a budget.  As with anything else in business, you spend money to make money. How much? That will depend on you, your message and your goals. Do you plan a do-it-yourself publicity campaign? Do you plan to hire someone in-house to execute your campaign? Or do you prefer to enlist the aid of a PR firm? Regardless of your approach, you need to make sure you’ve set aside the necessary funds to accomplish what you set out to do.

    ……

  • Commit to the time.  If you aren’t prepared to carry through on this step, then the first two steps won’t make much difference. I’ve witnessed publicity campaigns fizzle because a client wouldn’t take the time to be interviewed by a journalist from a top-tier publication on short notice, or provide answers to questions from a reporter who’s on a tight deadline.

Yes, it can be a pain and I realize you have other responsibilities, but you must find ways to make the time. If you’re not willing to do that, the newspaper reporters, radio show hosts, and TV producers will find someone who is.

…..
When you think about it, vowing to make publicity a priority in 2020 is much like any other New Year’s resolution. You have to make a decision about what you want to accomplish, make sure you have the resources you need to accomplish it, and then commit to following through.

Do those things and 12 months from now you’ll be able to look back at your 2020 publicity efforts and realize how the recognition you’ve gained has set you apart from your competition.
Here’s to a wonderful and productive New Year!

Literary Christmas Wishes, New Year Resolutions and more From The Cat …

Now that the first day of winter has come and winter solstice at that, I wanted to share some Merry Christmas Wishes from our Author, Rusty Blackwood, and share my literary New Year resolutions with my friends, readers, and all my new visitors. I am very blessed to be able to help and work with many amazing authors who share the same passion as I do when it comes to writing. They may do it as a hobby, a side career, or for many different reasons.

What I enjoy is to see authors become successful and that their books are found by avid readers who may enjoy our authors’ craft as writers and many of whom are independently or self-published. I especially enjoy helping those authors who are new and have published their first books as I get to help them learn just how and where to market and promote their books. It truly is my passion.

As I go into my 7th year doing so, I can honestly say I have much gratitude to be able to this as my little “at-home-business” and came from being very frustrated myself when my first book was published. I had to do the research and learn what I pass on to help other new authors’ and believe me, there was a lot of trial and error.  I don’t think there is a real solid recipe for book marketing and promoting.

I tell my clients (friends) that marketing a book will only go as far as it was written and edited and some genres just sell better than others. It is what’s between the pages of well-written words. It is why I enjoy reading books. A great story, be it fiction or nonfiction, needs to be able to pull in the reader and transport them into another time or place. But I will always stand by my motto … “that any book that has been published, no matter how long that book has been released and not read by a reader? It is still a new book!”

So as this year comes to a close and a new year is dawning, here is what I wish as my New Year Resolution for all the authors I work with past, present, and future. And my new year message to all those avid readers too … PLEASE CONSIDER placing a little book review when finishing a book. Think about the hours it took the writer to bring that story and some enjoyment of reading a book brings. And we look forward to all reviews regardless if they are good or “not so much”… WHY? It helps writers know what a reader likes, dislikes, or helps our craft as a writer.

THAT is this CAT’S New Year Hope! I wish you all who visit here a blessed and very Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎁🎄✨🥰😺📚📚

A SPECIAL MERRY CHRISTMAS WISH Video From Author, Rusty Blackwood!

……
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Top ranking romantic fiction author Rusty Blackwood believes the flair for fantasy is anything the mind wishes it to be, and she is a master at this. Within her expressive mind is found an endless array of romance, passion, textures, and colors to sweep the reader to exotic, faraway places where anything is possible, proving that her words really do leave you breathless.
Canadian born Blackwood, who chose her plume de nom by combining both the colour of her russet hair with her estranged husbands’ great, great, Scottish grandmother’s maiden name, grew up on her paternal grandfather’s farm in southwestern Ontario, Canada where she developed her love of writing while still in grade school, entering numerous competitions and writing exhibitions throughout her area, and attributes her love of writing to her late father James, and to the late Gladys Carroll, her elementary teacher. Although unprofessionally trained in the field, Rusty has always had an affinity for the written word, a gift to express it, and has demonstrated this talent many times since becoming a serious writer in 2001.

Miss Blackwood is a bronze medalist winner in the 2006 Annual International Library of Poetry, sponsored through PoetryPoem.com, for her 2005 poem, Desire.

She has written an eclectic array of contemporary and traditional poetry, publishing her first collection in October of 2009 entitled, “Feelings: A Rhythmic Journey in Thought,” which was later re-released in a second collection with additional content in 2011 under the title, “Impressions: A Poetic Rhythm in Emotion.” Feelings were followed in April of 2010 by a collection of assorted short stories for children, as well as the young at heart, entitled, “Young Minds,” which was later re-released as a second collection with additional content in 2012 under the title, “Through the Eyes of Innocence.”

In March of 2012, Rusty released her first short-story comedy, “The Misadventures of Derwood Tugbottom.”

Following a previously hard-fought, misguided, and misleading publishing road into the competitive world of mainstream fiction with her first two-part romance/drama, ‘Passion in Paris’ – Connections to the Past and Directions of the Heart respectively – Rusty was finally given the chance to accomplish what she had originally set out to do, and this exciting reprieve can be found within the pages of her 4-star, heart-touching romance/drama, “Passions In Paris: Revelations of a Lost Diary.”

‘Passions in Paris’ is followed by the riveting 5-star award-winning romantic fiction drama, ‘Willow’s Walk.’

In July 2017, Miss Blackwood released her second installment in the Derwood comedy series, titled, Derwood Returns. In this hysterical follow-up to The Misadventures of Derwood Tugbottom, the bubbling and pretentious Englishman, known for his staunch outlook and demanding ways, decides to return to the picturesque village of Vinehaven on the Lake, where he takes up residence in the swinging Sunset Villa Retirement Center, located directly across the road from the infamous Anchors Away, of which he hastily departed two years earlier. Now he is back, with a hard-learned lesson beneath his belt, and hopes of finding the life that escaped him on his initial try.

Rusty currently released the third installment of the Derwood Tugbottom comedy series, entitled, Derwood Goes Caribbean, on January 27, 2019.

Travel with Derwood, and his best friend, Robbie, as they board The Travelling Minstrel on a swinging single’s cruise to the Caribbean. Christmas 2014 is fast approaching and an intrepid Derwood talks Robert into taking a single’s cruise to the Caribbean with him., which sens them on another eccentric adventure. Will they find what they hope to aboard ship? Will happiness presents itself in one the ports of call, or will it avoid them altogether? Find out, in this third Derwood adventure, certain to make you laugh as you cruise right along with him.

Rusty’s third novel, The Perils of Autumn, is a 5-star award-winning romantic fiction drama set in the early 1970s at Landon Lawns Stables, a fictional thoroughbred racing stable in the posh community known as The Meadows located just outside Lexington Kentucky. This enthralling story centers around heroine Autumn Leeves, a twenty-four-year-old newly graduated RN, who is sent on assignment to Landon Lawns to care for the terminally ill wife of English equestrian master, Cyril Landon.

However, once there, Autumn encounters a world filled with intrigue, wonderment, and a well-kept secret. The Perils of Autumn was released on January 17, 2019, and is available in paperback, hardback, and Kindle editions at all Amazons, and in Kobo at Chapters. Paperback and Hardback editions may also be ordered at all Chapters, Coles and Indigo. This novel is also a FINALIST in Romance in both the 2019 International Book Awards and The American Book Fest Best Book Awards.

The 5’1″(154.94 cm) spunky redhead is often asked how much of herself is found in her heroines, and she has been noted to say a fair amount, adding that most writers inspiration comes from many different aspects of life experience and reaping from them all that one can to use to one’s best advantage, so in that respect, she would have to say that many sides, aspects, and flavors of her heroines derive from her own personality and life.

Rusty has always loved the Arts in their many unique forms and this is demonstrated in the two Interior Decorating and Design diplomas she holds, as well as her many years spent on the south-western Ontario stage performing with her family’s country music band, The Midnight Ramblers, and the country-rock – blues band, MIRAGE respectively as an accomplished vocalist, bassist, and rhythm guitarist.

Rusty firmly believes in going after what she wants, doing whatever is required to make it happen, and turning a deaf ear to anyone who says it cannot be done. She has faced many challenges throughout her life, emerging more determined with each, but make no mistake about her methods, for she is a firm believer in Karma and the adage that whatever you put out in life revisits you, so be sure your intentions are proper.

Miss Blackwood now resides in the cultural city of St. Catharines, Ontario and when not at her keyboard, enjoys art, music, nature, gardening, and spending quality time with family, friends, and her loyal cat, Tipper.

Cat’s Blog Hosting Author, Joe Siccardi and His New Book “Sam,” Book Tour, and Holiday Sale ~ Presented By Enticing Journey Book Tours and Sponsored By Lyon Media Services…

SPECIAL TOUR AUTHOR INTERVIEW
With Author, Joe Siccardi
Courtesy of “Author Voices”

……

Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?
..
Born and raised in Paterson, NJ. Currently retired and living in Romulus, NY.

If you currently reside somewhere besides where you were born, what’s the story that lead from there to here?

I started a 52-year newspaper career (reporter, editor, owner/publisher) at the Paterson News with stops at newspapers in Newton, NJ; Belvidere, IL; Toledo, OH; Washington, DC; and Seneca County, NY. I retired to Dover-Foxcroft, ME, where I wrote three books. I am currently visiting my children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren.

….

What made you decide to write and publish your first book?

After selling my newspaper, I had the time for “fun” writing.

…..

How would you describe your books to first-time readers?

They are Christian-based, but not directed exclusively to Christian audiences. The novella (Heaven Shining Through) and latest followup novel (My Name Is Sam … and Heaven Is Still Shining Through) are fiction dealing with real life. The non-fiction is a collection of short stories (Wisdom From a Father … one dad’s thoughts on life) also dealing with real-life issues.

…..

Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?

I think just about anyone can relate. The stories are affirming. I think young women and mothers could relate to the fiction; dads the non-fiction.

…..

What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?

I don’t think it was unexpected, but the amount of rewriting surprised me.
While writing you’re constantly re-writing…
refining… adding… deleting.

…..

If you could, what advice would you give to your past self before embarking on this journey?

Write for yourself. Enjoy the process.
Don’t get discouraged.

……

How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?

Obviously, we all want to be best-selling authors, but I would
be happy if my message-oriented books
touched just one person and made a difference in their life.

….

What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?

Marketing. Definitely marketing. Getting the books to the right audience.

…..

What are your biggest strengths when it comes to a book ) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?

Being in the writing business for 50+ years, my biggest strengths are editing and story flow. I also understand the publishing aspects (terminology, processes, etc.) and I know how to market.

…..

What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to a book ) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?

The biggest weaknesses are recognizing when a rewrite is necessary, choosing a publishing platform (traditional vs. self) and reaching the right market.

…..

When do you think you will write your next book?

I’m actually working on Volume 2 of the non-fictional short stories… Wisdom From a Father… one dad’s thoughts on life and the follow-up.

….

Lastly. Are you self published or did
you use a hybrid publisher or a traditional publisher?

I’ve used all three…Traditional (Xulon) for Heaven Shining Through; hybrid — cover and niche marketing (Higher Ground Books & Media) for My Name Is Sam … and Heaven Is Still Shining Through)– I self-published for Wisdom From a Father… one dad’s thoughts on life. My new release of “My Name
Is Sam” I also self-published.

Sit down with a cup of coffee or a nice wine and visit with Sam as she shares a lifetime of memories in this new Christian-themed fictional memoir. My Name Is Sam … and Heaven Is Still Shining Through is a follow-up to the breakout novella, Heaven Shining Through. It introduces Sam (Samantha), her family and friends in more detail than the original, and picks up where the novella left off. I hope readers get to know Sam as a friend, a life long friend. Share her life … complete with some drama, some humor, some heart tugs. Just a free-willed suburban Jersey girl trying to figure out this journey called life with the presence of God in her ordinary life as the underlying theme.

Kate stayed with me after the funeral to temporarily close the house.

We knew we would have to come back to make arrangements to sell the house and make final decisions about what stays in the family, who gets what, making a donation pile and what has served its purpose and usefulness. We took a final inventory as we covered the furniture, adjusted the heat, and set the alarm. On the ride back to Ohio, I thanked Kate for staying behind and helping. She politely responded, “Wouldn’t have had it any other way, Mom. You know, we girls have to stick together.”

“Thanks, Sweetie.”

It was small-talk for a while, but as we merged onto the Ohio Turnpike with the sun starting to set, Kate turned to me. “Mom, can I ask you something?”

“Sure! Anytime! Anything!”

“Mom, I’ve never seen you at such peace. I mean, usually comments like Father Pat’s would have made you …” her voice trailed before adding, “… uncomfortable.”

I smiled. “You’re right, honey. Normally, being singled out like that would have made me squirm. I may have even challenged some of those comments. But I sat with Grandma over those last hours and I knew, I just knew, Father Pat was spot on.”

“I’m glad you made peace with Grandma. I know you didn’t have such a great relationship with her.”

“It wasn’t so bad. We had our ups and downs, kinda like you and me.”

“Downs?” protested Kate in mock surprise. “We had a great relationship growing up!”

“Yes, we did, but there were those times… like when you wanted to date Billy … and stay out all night with your friends at 14 … or when I caught you smoking in the basement …”

“That wasn’t me,” Kate mockingly interrupted. “That was JR. I was just holding the cigarette for him.”

“Yeah. Yeah. Yeah,” I said. “That’s why I love you guys!”

“That’s why we loved you too, Mom. You were always so cool.”

I squeezed her hand as we focused on the road ahead. There was a storm brewing ahead of us, but all of a sudden a single ray of sunshine found its way through the clouds.

Kate reached out her hand, pointing to the sky. “Look, Mom. Heaven is shining through!”

“You remembered. Yes. Yes. That’s heaven shining through! Isn’t it hopeful?”
