Her titles are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and many online bookstores and released between mid-2009 through mid-2015. “Some people struggle with what they are meant to do in life and others just know it all along. I’ve known since I was a small child that I wanted to write–the stories were always in my head.” The Cedar Cove Chronicles is a series set in the fictional community of Cedar Cove, North Carolina, and follows the lives of ‘The Jansan Family,’ their friends and neighbors during the 40’s and ’50s.

Here is how Cynthia describes her fictional light Christian theme drama …
“Have you ever been to Cedar Cove? Once you visit, life for you will never be the same. You will never want to read about witches, warlocks, and evil forces again. Todd is my first introduction to Ulmer’s work and now understand why it became a fantastic award-winner. I look forward to reading the whole series of ‘The Ceder Cove Chronicles’ after reading Todd as it holds your interest in what is to come next being a family saga and unique enjoyable book!

The story of a fictional family set in the 1940s – 1950s when times were much more straightforward. The Jansan family goes through many trials and storms but holds steadfast to their Christian faith and beliefs as they learn they can endure any storm together as a loving caring family. I am not a big fan of heavy religious reads, but this story has just the right amount as not to be overbearing. Todd is well written, well-developed characters. Watch out for Grandma Cal, a vibrant ole coot!

The story overall pulls you in with family drama, surprises, and a lot of love. Even as you learn about their neighbor, who is a very nasty mean drunk and is a constant that made me feel lucky I don’t live next door to Horace! (I’m not too fond of spoilers) …

I was, however, privy to know that the author had woven in some of her cherished childhood and family memories of family living in the south, which I feel. made this book even more special to read. It has a historical feel to a fictional novel that has you engaged with only an area or two where the flow could have picked up a bit.

While reading Todd, be ready to experience more love, some laughs, a tear or two, and feelings of loss of old fashioned family values and discipline that many of us grew up within like ‘Old Southern Americana.’

I highly recommend it and such an enjoyable read.

As the title of this review suggests, I found the child’s voice narrating this story to be believable, heartfelt, and engaging. Another big plus for this book is the window it provides into family life for a small farming community during World War II. It’s a fresh perspective.
So many World War II books and movies I’ve run across go more into the battles and bombs, the politics, the atrocities of the Nazis, the efforts on the home front in support of the war—all of which are important aspects that help us understand life during that time. This book, for me, is a welcome addition, something else to think about.

Another positive is the ongoing and escalating conflict between the narrator’s family, the Jansans, and a neighboring family, the Hammonds. I was very much emotionally invested as the plot unfolded. Very good read and well-written!

Pre-order Happening Now and New Book Release Coming by Author, Tony Roberts Called “When Despair Meets Delight”…

New Book Releasing Soon By My Dear Friend and fellow author Tony Roberts! It is his second book to release and I can’t wait to give it read! He has been a tireless advocate for those of us who have Mental Health challenges in life.

There is more to learn and the ordering details are at the bottom of this post and shared from his amazing website of Delight in Disorder!

When Despair Meets Delight Goes to Press

The time is at hand. After five years of gestation, and over a year of hard labor (with a week of major complications), I have been assured that When Despair Meets Delight will go to the printers today. From there, it should take two weeks to prepare a review copy. When I am satisfied that all looks good, I will bring boxes of books home. Then comes the delightfully arduous task of mailing out advance orders — now over 100. On September 3, the print and e-book will be released on Amazon and the audio version on Audible.

This has been an incredibly busy week. I contracted with a man from Uganda to design memes for social media. I hired a sound engineer to create a commercial for iHeart radio. I have been reaching out to podcasters, blog authors, pastors, and others to get the message out. I am both incredibly enthused and emotionally exhausted.

FreshHope - God's Second Chances

I know I can’t maintain this pace and I’m happy to say I have much help. Not only from God, but from God’s people. Over 100 people have joined #TeamDelight, praying for me and our shared mission to spread hope for troubled minds, the hope that shines light in the darkness and turns despair into delight.

Many of you know (some more than others) that I am taking a big risk. With my illness, such a frenetic schedule can do me in. One of the only ways to promote a memoir is to promote the author.

For someone with bipolar, this can lead to grandiosity. I can begin to believe my own press clippings. Please pray with me that I maintain a humble heart, even if it means I am humiliated. I’m willing to play the fool, as long as I am a fool for Christ and give God the glory.

Finally, it is essential that I show integrity; that my actions are consistent with my words. One piece of pastoral advice I’ve given people is — “Receive God’s care, so you can care for yourselves to care for others.” Like the flight instructions often ignored, before we can help children with their oxygen masks, we have to put on our own.

If I deplete my spiritual strength in an effort to manage more than I can bear, I won’t do anyone any good. To avoid this, I’m going to plan each day a schedule that promotes good health — physical, psychological, spiritual.

My primary aim in life is not just to glorify God, but to enjoy him forever. One of the best ways to enjoy God is to appreciate creation. Each day I’m going to do something that better connects me with nature. Whether it is watching the joy of my wife as she plants flowers, taking my dog Briley for a refreshing walk through the park, or going on a retreat at a cabin in the woods. I am committing myself to live more in harmony with what God made and called good.

One thing I know I will continue to do is writing. Writing is not only my vocation, but it is also my primary form of prayer. It is my life’s blood. There is a direct vein going from my heart to my hand that pumps who I am and whose I am onto the page.

When I write, the voices inside and around me are shushed and I can better hear God’s voice. When I read Scripture and reflect on it, I embrace the truth God speaks out of love for us.

About The Author ~ Deena Rae Schoenfeldt of eBookBuilders.com

Deena Rae Schoenfeldt
…..
Deena Rae was born and raised in Texas
— home of bluebonnets, boots, beef, and big hair — into a family that was in the printing and publishing industries. Her father was a computer programmer for major newspapers when the equipment took up whole rooms and her mother has been a publisher for almost 30 years — trying, unsuccessfully, to bring her into the family business.

She was happily living her life, having three third-generation genetically perfected super-nerds herself, but then through a series of events (unfortunate and fortunate), she officially joined The Book Connection — her mother’s publishing and packaging company — as the Digital Director, to create the e-publishing division in 2011. Her computer skills, willingness to help authors, love of literature, no-nonsense attitude, and quick wit have helped shepherd many authors through the maze of digital publishing.

Through her work with E-BookBuilders, Deena Rae has been able to meet authors and writers from all over the world and in every genre imaginable. She has a biting wit, obscure sense of humor, awareness of the absurd, and a love of literature all which led to the creation of Bluebonnets, Bagpipes, and Books, the NSFW publishing discussion podcast she produced and hosted with Janet Wrenn and Peter Burnett.

Her no-nonsense attitude made for some hilarious discussions and plenty of “Oh my God, did she really just say that?” moments. That podcast led to the audio/video podcasts for Badass Book Society – Badass Books & Booze as well as Badass Pub. Sometimes it is as if there is no filter between her brain and her mouth. But if she likes you she tries to be nice — sometimes.

You can find her most hours of every day attached to her computer either researching, coding e-books or flowing print books for her fabulous friends/clients or chasing after the ‘world-famous’ Wee Bossy Baby who is now Wee Bossy Tyrant-In-Training.

Catherine Townsend-Lyon‘s Review

Jun 07, 2020

A Memoir of Addiction, Self-Discovery, and Freedom Within Recovery

Not many of us get a second chance in life after addiction. Not everyone reaches the height of the business world while having a self-imposed problem with opioids until you overdose. That is what happened to Darren Prince as he shares all in his intriguing memoir of “Aiming High.” Being a top sport and celebrity agent while representing some of the most iconic and legendary figures of our generation didn’t mean Darren was not immune from addiction either as he shares in his memoir.

Another lesson you will learn from reading Darren’s book. As a person maintaining recovery myself, I have learned that “Addiction of any kind does not Discriminate of whom it will touch”… Something Darren understands today and brave of him to share his testimony while sharing many memorable stories throughout his career as he weaves his downfall, but most important, how he fought like hell to gain his life back within recovery. He also proves we stay “sick as our secrets.” And that is part of the disease of drug addiction.

I won’t lie; it is impressive to continue working in a high-profile career and hiding a secret of drug addiction. But? The bigger you become? The harder they fall. But Darren got back up and now shares all to help others who may suffer in silence just as he had. He is a real example that if want your life back from addiction? You have to do the recovery work needed, and Darren shares it as well. The fantastic stories alone make the book a great read, but the clear message is there is HOPE after addiction, and recovery is possible for anyone.

“Aiming High” needs to be read by everyone because it has an extraordinary message of endurance, acceptance, and HOPE.

5-Stars!
Aiming High is an identifiable story of self will run riot, the inability to be true to oneself, and the power it took to finally deal with life on life’s terms.

Darren’s acknowledgment of what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now is so honest, courageous, and inspirational! This book needed to be written and more importantly, needs to be read!

MUST-READ!!!! YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN!!!

As the opioid epidemic continues to worsen in this country, people need to learn more about it, especially if anyone close to you is battling this horrible addiction aka disease of the mind. This story is almost surreal, but shows how it can happen to anyone! This book was extremely well written. One of those rare books you won’t put down until it’s complete!

FORWARD Written by Earvin “Magic” Johnson Former NBA Legend:

Darren and I have worked together for 24+ years. During that time, he has worked 24/7, negotiating memorabilia signings, speaking engagements, appearances, and other services. It’s an honor to write the foreword for his book.

Transitioning from being a renowned athlete to a successful businessman was not easy, and I like working with people who are trustworthy, motivated, and efficient. Darren was all of the above. After the second time working together for one of my signings, Darren told me that his parents were downstairs in the hotel lobby and asked if they could join us. Meeting Darren’s parents helped me realize how important family was to him. His business wasn’t about making money; it was about building relationships and growing extended family. He made me a part of his family, and he became a part of mine.

Two years later, Darren shared his dream to become an agent and start Prince Marketing Group. He was young, but he had a plan and he knew what he wanted to do in life. I wanted Darren to be more than successful, so I continued to work with him as his client. Over the next few years, I watched as he worked with some of the biggest stars in sports and entertainment, such as Smokin’ Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Pamela Anderson, Chevy Chase, Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman, Hulk Hogan, and many, many others.

As good friends, in 2006 Darren talked to me about very challenging times that he was undergoing, the most challenging being an opioid addict. “Earvin,” he said, “I can’t get out of bed in the morning or function during the day without painkillers. It’s taken over my life. Talking, traveling, working out, eating; I can’t do anything without the pills. I can’t stop.”

Nothing was bigger than the painkillers that he was addicted to, which were slowly taking his life. I had seen too many lives destroyed from addiction and knew he needed to get his life in order. It took some time for Darren to reach complete sobriety. After almost nearly losing his life to opioids, Darren overcame the addiction and built a greater life through his recovery.

Through sobriety, he has continued to expand his business, and he is using his testimony to help others fight their addiction. Amidst all the tragedy that has resulted from this opioid epidemic, Darren has the courage and support to share his story and inspire thousands of people in this book. Darren is a survivor!

“Today, Darren doesn’t just represent the biggest stars; he has become a star in his own right in the world of recovery.”

He speaks in schools all over the country, and he is dedicated to Turning Point, where he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at their recent gala. Darren has appeared on Dr. Oz and other national media to share his message on recovery.

Recently, he began working with the White House Commission on Combating the Opioid Crisis, where he plans to educate youth on how they can build self-worth and faith so they don’t go down the same road he did.

Over the years, I have watched Darren Prince grow in his business, tackle his addiction, and now lead a life of spirituality and inspiration. I am extremely proud of the man he has become, and I am honored to be a part of Darren’s family.

I hope his book inspires you to overcome any battles you may be fighting and to be a light unto others.

Even After The End Of A Rainbow? You Have To Take A Break For Some Solitude, Some Writing, and Some TLC…THEN? An Inspiring Message By Author, Tony Roberts.

>>>>
Even though I am blessed to be working from home for my business, many are having to be forced to do so due to this pandemic of COVID-19 …And being isolated as we are is not a normal way to live life. Look, I get that, but, if staying at home means that it could help save lives?  I would choose LIFE over making a BUCK. (Of course, just my own opinion)…

Today everyone is talking about “DO WE OPEN”? or DO WE STAY CLOSED?

The news media outlets are putting a spin on just about every piece of information about this pandemic when it comes out and I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of it. I see how it makes everyone on edge, moody, and I need a break from it all.

I write this because I am ready to take some time off.  Yes, “The Rainbow” is how I feel  being blessed to work from home and love doing what I do to help other authors, but after book marketing, promoting and consulting for many from October 2013 to now with no time off?  The time seems right to do so.

We already don’t watch much news or TV as it just raises my anxiety over this pandemic and since my work is done through some media, social media, and the internet, I see all the articles and heartbreaking stories of families losing loved ones from this virus. Then you have those who are screaming that they are not getting the financial help from the government, so businesses want to open and seem to not CARE that it could make this virus spread even more?

A Burning Fire; A Wisp of Smoke

Writing, then, was a substitute for myself: if you don’t love me, love my writing & love me for my writing. It is also much more: a way of ordering and reordering the chaos of experience. ― Sylvia PlathThe Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

I keep a daily journal of happenings in my life. Some of these things emerge in my public writing. Literary quotes. Character sketches. Story outlines. You will also find less assuming material in my journals. Financial profiles. Schedules. Contact information. To call these daily journals is generous at best. Sometimes weeks go by without a single entry. Then I’ll go on a binge and nearly fill a book in a week.

If my journal could speak in those gaps, it would cry out in anguish, wail in sorrow, moan in despair. But the pages are blank. Like my mind. Unborn words. Aborted sentences. Silent stories. Flannery O’Connor once said,

I write to discover what I know.

…..
When I don’t write, I can’t think. This is one reason I’ve found such delight in chatting. I write much better than I talk. It’s not that I can be more impressive, but more authentic. There is a direct vein from my fingers to my heart that pumps life into my words which represent me better than what comes out of my mouth.

I have never been one to keep a private diary. On the contrary, I am eager to be read, for people to like what I write, to be liked for what I write. I want people to find meaning in the way I string words together, knit sentence after sentence, stitch a story quilt that is not only beautiful, but will keep them warm in an often bitter cold world.

…..

A great fire burns within me, but no one stops to warm themselves at it, and passers-by only see a wisp of smoke.  ― Vincent van Gogh.

……
Writing is a blessing and a curse. I am blessed to work alone, on my own schedule. And sometimes I am cursed with loneliness. As I write, I stare at the blank screen, my fingers hovering over the keyboard, searching for something inspired to say. At times the words flow.  But not tonight. Tonight they are buried in a forest of wispy metaphors and burned-out analogies.

van Gogh’s analogy about the fire burning within works for me at least two levels. The fire is both the passion to create and the dangerous drive to destroy. Creativity sparks my lit desire to make sense of a nonsensical world. Even when no one finds warmth in its flames. Even if it is only viewed as a vaporous puff.

On another level, the fire is self-destructive. Moving with no clear path, ravishing my mind, slashing through my relationships, burning out my desire. No one stops to absorb my heat, contain my flames. They see little else than a faint, indistinct cloud.

It is a celebrated fact that van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime. Some see this as a testament to futility. Maybe he should have given up and become a house painter to better earn his keep. Some say this points to society’s failure to recognize genius. It is a tragic shame we only acknowledge an artist’s worth after his or her untimely death.

I instead choose to look at it from the perspective of Vincent’s patron, his brother Theo. Theo van Gogh was an art dealer who absolutely adored his older brother. Not only did he make it financially possible for Vincent to pursue the art of painting with his whole heart, Theo was also generous with his praise and encouragement for his brother to see to his health.

Vincent wrote many letters to Theo (see The Letters of Vincent van Gogh) expressing his views on art, nature, God, friendship. This work is a thick brush stroke of simple beauty, such as this line Vincent directed solely at Theo,

… money can be repaid, but not kindness such as yours.

….
Success such as van Gogh’s is not measured in receiving popular acclaim, but in the loving appreciation of one person. This makes all the difference in the world. It makes all the difference for the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I  first sensed a calling to be a writer at the age of nine when I composed my first poem, “Ode to My Pet Rock.”

I was born and raised in the Hoosier heartland just south of Indianapolis. I grew up worshiping high school basketball and once had the honor of playing in a televised “game of the week.”

I went to Hanover College (alma mater of both Mike Pence and Woody Harrelson – go figure). After many detours into sex, drugs, and more folk rock than roll, I wound up at seminary and became a pastor. It was then that symptoms of depression and mania culminated in a psychotic episode that became pivotal in my life, for better and for worse.

After graduating from Hanover, I obtained an Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. While there, I did ministry assignments at a state hospital for persons with developmental disabilities, as well as at a women’s prison, and a inner-city hospital.

I served two decades as a solo pastor. I then shifted to writing, speaking, and leading small groups. In March of 2014, I published my spiritual memoir, Delight in Disorder: Ministry, Madness, Mission. Having served in pastoral ministry and gone mad, it’s now my mission to bridge the gap between faith communities and the mental health world.

I now live in Columbus, Indiana, with supportive family and faithful friends who keep me honest and encourage me to be who God created me to be. My greatest earthly delights are my four children and two grandchildren, with one more on the way. “The soul is healed by being with children.” (Fyodor Dostoyevsky) Book is available on Amazon …
