Despite The Devil is a work of fiction in the women’s fiction, contemporary romance, and interpersonal drama sub-genres, and was penned by author Shawna James. This compelling and emotional tale focuses on the central couple Stephanie and Andrew, whose initial romance seems ideal and a true match made in heaven.

But Andrew has skeletons in the closet from old mistakes, and both he and Stephanie always have one eye on the past, consumed by the fear that it might come to destroy their future. What results is a poignant, romantic, and emotional tale about finding love and fighting for it, with faith and perseverance.

Author Shawna James has crafted a romantic drama that delivers clean content suitable for readers of all sensitivities, and with a deep sense of passion and devotion from its central pairing. More than this, the work smacks of realism thanks to the grounding of the characters and their realistic dialogue. When faced with adversity they react in ways that we as readers can really relate to, and it compels us to go with them every step of the way on their journey.

One of the things I particularly liked about the work was the plot structure, which keeps things interesting as different elements being revealed. We get some great highs and lows as we see how Andrew and Stephanie deal with the bumps on the road. Overall, I would certainly recommend Despite The Devil for its realistic approach to contemporary drama. A well-written work indeed.

Rose City Reader 5.0 out of 5 stars moving WWII history
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2021.

They Called Him Marvin is the intimate history of one family caught up the War in the Pacific during WWII. First Lieutenant Dean Sherman was one of some 570 Allied airmen captured by the Japanese. His wife Connie was home in Utah, raising the baby Dean never met.

Roger Stark’s new book tells the story of Dean and Connie Sherman in all its historical context, using their own letters as well as primary source materials. I’m impressed by the research the author put into the book and the way he used the letters and personal story of Dean and Connie to tell the bigger story of the airmen fighting the war in Japan. The book really brings to life the story of the brave men flying B-29 fighters and the harrowing effects the war had on families on both sides.

I am reading this story, and am riveted. The author has a way of telling the story that is enjoyable as well as enjoying what the story is about. I’ve felt happy, sad, glad, horrified, and enchanted by the story and by the way it is written. I recommend this book to anyone, as it appeals to several aspects of human nature/real life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that will leave you crying
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021

A book that will leave you crying, with a heart full of both longing and love. A reminder to hold those you love close while you can. The window into a true love story through Connie and Dean’s letters surrounded by the realities of horrendous war both broke my heart and filled it with hope.

Showcasing their joy and love while describing what life inside the war was like, what lead to each war action and how the air battles transpired is no easy feat. However this book tackled them all with an engaging narrative that added levity at just the right moments. A difficult, tragic topic to share with the world and so worth reading!

About The Author

I would describe myself as a reluctant writer. But when a story comes along that demands to be told, you pick up your pen.

Six years ago, I heard the story of a friend’s father in World War II. I was so moved by his telling of the story that I asked if he would allow me to write it. The result is the soon-to-be-published “They Called Him Marvin.” My life has been touched in so many ways by being part of documenting this profound story.

My career as an addiction counselor (CDP) lead me to write “The Waterfall Concept; A Blueprint for Addiction Recovery” and co-author “Reclaiming Your Addicted Brain.”
After my counseling retirement, I decided I wanted to learn more about the craft of writing and started attending classes at Portland, Oregon’s Attic Institute.

Another Book Reader and Reviewer Said This About “Despite The Devil”

The story of Despite the Devil is a phenomenal book because it encompasses everything good about literature. It has a brilliant plot, enthralling characters, and an incredibly well-thought-out story that will keep the reader wanting to read for hours on end. Despite the Devil is a unique and special book; it is exceptional for the apparent reasons… that it encompasses everything great about the written word, but it is unique because of the plot. The plot of this novel is unique for the romance genre in my opinion and it reads like a movie, and you can imagine the details in perfect glory!

Shawna James, the author does an incredible job of piecing together romantic elements with exciting and suspenseful moments and seamlessly integrates themes into one book of intrigue. James’ is a phenomenal writer because the author is dedicated to her work as well as passionate. James’ passion for the written word shines off the page and into the reader’s mind; her sometimes lengthy, beautiful descriptions will send the readers mind into visual overdrive, the reader will be able to perfectly imagine every detail the reader comes across and that in my opinion, is a sign of a talented author.

Reviewed By Scott Cahan for Readers’ Favorite

The Weeping God and the Book of Hope is part three in the Rising Wind series by Diane Olsen. This book is actually a prequel to the first two books, so it’s not necessary to have read those first. The two lead characters, Sage Dalton and L.W., are the parents of the main character in the other Rising Wind books.

Although the characters are different and it is set in an earlier time period, the tone of the book is very similar. This time they discover an ancient text in a Mexican desert tomb that leads Sage, L.W., and a group of fellow explorers to Tibet where they find themselves in the middle of a war. Even with danger at every turn, they still manage to discover secret caves that lead them toward an elusive yet powerful Book of Hope.

The Weeping God and the Book of Hope, just like the other books in Diane Olsen’s series, combine three strong story elements to make for a fun, exciting, and educational read. First, and foremost, her books have a superb cast of characters that readers can easily relate to. They care about each other, work together to achieve a common goal, laugh together, and cry together.

Second, her stories revolve around rare ancient discoveries found all around the world. Much like the great Indiana Jones films, each new discovery comes with an element of danger. Sometimes the danger comes from a person or an organization that wants to keep the discovery for themselves, or the danger comes from the object itself, or sometimes it’s a little of both. The third common theme is an embracing of all world religions.

Religion is somehow intertwined with each rare find that the characters make. I appreciate the way Ms. Olsen always characterizes the religious elements in her stories in a positive light, as the hope of mankind rather than the way most works of fiction portray religion in a negative sense as mankind’s biggest problem. This book is a fun read filled with colorful characters and lots of action.

I highly recommend it for fans of character-driven adventure who like to learn about science, ancient civilizations, and world religions along the way.”

“Reviewed By Jon Michael Miller for Readers’ Favorite

“In the thought-provoking and enjoyably engaging Collection of Short Stories and Essays: “Of Humans and Animals” by Peggy Hinaekian, you will meet an amazing array of characters from a variety of locales and points of view. Direct, guileless, with ironic humor, Peggy Hinaekian demonstrates her virtuosity as a writer and a visual artist.

There are 29 easy-to-read and much-to-think-about stories, most preceded by enigmatic Picasso-like drawings, an ideal volume to keep by your side or on your coffee table to fill those idle spaces in your daily life. There is even a piece written by a zoo gorilla named Bella, and two poems penned by house cats. And every presentation opens an area that we often think about but seldom have the pluck to express.

A common theme is sexual unease, whether in marriage or simply the malaise of relationships turned tepid without romance and adventure, of bored partners quietly seeking replacements, of erotic unfulfillment. It might be a man thinking about picking up a woman in a coffee shop, or vice-versa.

Or a lonely traveler, or a disgruntled housewife, or an erotic dream. Nothing very graphic, but strong feelings, a woman seeking her “Rhett Butler,” or a wealthy man searching for a suitable mother for his imagined child. There are several child personae too. But every story is a challenging gem of frank insight into our tightly held but seldom spoken viewpoints.

Taken all together, we find a fine writer speaking profoundly about the loneliness and yearning of being alive. The slices of life in Collection of Short Stories and Essays: “Of Humans and Animals” by Peggy Hinaekian is like a huge bouquet of hidden truth that will amuse and sometimes sadden the reader, but always enliven one’s inner joy at exuberantly expressed reality. Every story hits its target.”
