I wanted to share a very interesting Blog Post by Justin C. Cohen regarding the two recent shootings of two innocent black men just going about their day until they came across encounters with police. WHAT the hell is going on in AMERICA?  When did people become SO immune to this disgusting break down of today’s Society in America? Are we getting closer and closer to the “End of Times” here on earth? Can someone explain this to me?

Here is how Justin sees it . . . .

“Advice for White Folks in the Wake of The Police Murder of A Black Person”…

.

.

Yesterday, Alton Sterling was executed by a police officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The video of the encounter is gruesome, and it should shake you to your core, no matter the color of your skin. The police tackled him to the ground, pinned him, and shot him at close range. By definition, this is an extrajudicial killing. It’s not dissimilar to what happened to Eric Garner, Laquan McDonald, Mike Brown, Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, and a long line of Black people who have lost their lives at the hands of a corrupt and racist criminal justice system. We know their names, and it’s up to us to say them.

I feel an extraordinary amount of anger and sadness today, but that pain cannot compare to what our Black friends and colleagues are experiencing. As a White person, I will never know the extent of this sort of pain. I can, however, offer some modest advice to other White folks who are trying to figure out how to be good allies on a day like today.

1.)  If you’re White, don’t look to your friends of color for answers today. If you haven’t already grappled with the extent to which our criminal justice system – from the police to prosecutors to prisons – treats Black people differently than they treat you, today is not the day to start reaching out. If you’re eager to learn, talk to other White people who have been engaged in this work, as one of their primary roles as allies is to lessen the burden that people of color have for the education process around issues of justice. Now also is a good time to do some independent reading and research. If data moves you, read Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, which catalogs the extent to which the American criminal justice system disproportionately, and unjustly, punishes Black people. Once you’ve spent some time educating yourself, then you should have some conversations with friends of color, but you should spend most of the time listening to them.

2.)  What happened to Alton Sterling is, in fact, about race. If you are tempted to change the subject to something else, please resist that urge. Police kill Black people at a rate disproportionate to both criminal activity and their presence in the population at large. Campaign Zero has done an extraordinary job of cataloging both the extent of this problem and its relationship to race. What happened to Alton Sterling does not happen to White people.

3.)  Be aware of a few standard, and racist, media tropes about Black victims. In the wake of police executions, you are bound to hear a few things that distract from the real issues. One of those storylines is that “he was no angel,” wherein the media will outline the various ways in which the victim behaved inappropriately in the past. None of this matters, and it certainly does not change the fact that the police killed the person outside of any legal process. I smoked pot when I was in high school, such as, and if the police used that as justification to murder me, that would be ludicrous. The second narrative that will emerge is that the killing of Alton Sterling is part of the “Ferguson effect,” wherein police killings are linked to increases in crime. This is not true, as there is no statistical connection between local crime rates and police killings:

.

The “black on black crime” crowd back at it again. No evidence to support their claims, all white supremacist pseudoscience.

They’ll say black people are killed by police because of “crime” when there’s no correlation between the two issues.pic.twitter.com/VaY4zNMKlX

.

The final storyline to avoid believing is the notion that the real problem is “Black on Black” crime. Bringing this up is an attempt to change the subject away from the extrajudicial killing of Black people by the police. Not to mention, the vast majority of crimes are committed in racial groups, so “White on White” crime is just as prevalent as “Black on Black” crime.

4.) As a White person, you are in a unique position to influence the perspectives of other White people. If the illegal killing of Black people by the police bothers you, as it should, talk to your White friends about it. There are many nuances and ambiguities in institutional racism, but the police committing murder is not one of them. In many cases, having these conversations will not be easy. The more you talk about race, however, the easier it will become. You might even change some minds, particularly among family members. If you’re already spending time talking to other White people about race, now is a good time to help other White people develop their skills.

It is never too late to make a personal commitment to being a more active ally in the movement for Black lives. A year ago this month, folks were fighting to take down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state capitol, after the massacre at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. A year ago this month we started wondering what happened to Sandra Bland. Correcting these injustices is the work of generations, not years or months. If you’re a White person on the sidelines, we need you in the fight.

Please raise your voice, particularly today.

“Now, of course, when my guest posted his blog post, there was another senseless killing of Philando Castile not long after and was live streamed on Facebook to prove that Philando Castile had not done anything to provoke the police. He was reaching for his wallet to get his licence and gun permit when the officer fired on him.
Then? Last night, we have a “Killing Spree” at a protest for the two slain men of Dallas Police officers? More killing and carnage of innocent lives. Wow! I have no words. No words except for what I wrote in the beginning of this post.

Is this what AMERICA HAS COME TO?
Look, there are people on both sides of this tragedy who are not going to agree about this whole mess. But it is NOT about who is right or who is wrong. It not about black or white, it is not about “black lives matter” or “all lives matter” it is about “Human Beings” being killed, lives being taken from families and loved ones.

.

DO YOU really think it matters what the color of your skin is when you are lying in a pine box six feet under the ground? Really? No, what matters is that another human being was killed in another senseless shooting. That is what matters here” . . . .

“My Thoughts, Love and Prayers go out to all the Families whose loved ones were Killed and Hurt in all the senseless killings this past week. This is to ALL LIVES TAKEN” .  .  .  .

“When a great-grandson inherits two aging trunks and a stack of meticulously detailed journals penned by his great-grandfather, he sets out to fulfill his great-grandfather’s last request: to tell the story of an incredible life replete with adventure, violence, and tragedy. The great-grandfather’s name is Billy Battles–a man often trapped and overwhelmed by circumstances beyond his control.”

For much of his 100-year-long life, Billy is a man missing and largely unknown to his descendants. His great-grandson is about to change that. As he works his way through the aging journals and the other possessions he finds in the battered trunks he uncovers the truth about his mysterious great-grandfather–a man whose deeds and misdeeds propelled him on an extraordinary and perilous journey from the untamed American West to the inscrutable Far East, Latin America, and Europe.

As he flips through the pages of the handwritten journals penned by his great-grandfather, he learns of Billy’s surprising connections to the Spanish-American War, French Indochina, and revolutions in Mexico and other Latin American countries. But most of all he learns that in finding Billy Battles he has also found a long-lost and astonishing link to the past  . . . .

“Billy Battles is definitely not in Kansas anymore.”

As Book 2 of the Finding Billy Battles trilogy opens, Billy is far from his Kansas roots—and his improbable journeys are just beginning. He is aboard an ocean liner sailing to the Mysterious East (Hong Kong, French Indochina, and the Philippines), among other places.

The year is 1894 and aboard the SS China Billy meets a mysterious, dazzling, and possibly dangerous German Baroness, locked horns with malevolent agents of the German government, and battled ferocious Chinese and Malay pirates in the South China Sea. Later, he is inadvertently embroiled in the bloody anti-French insurgency in Indochina–which quite possibly makes him the first American combatant in a country that eventually will become Vietnam.

Later, in the Philippines, he is thrust into the Spanish-American War and the anti-American insurgency that follows. But Billy’s troubles are just beginning. As the 19th-century ends and the 20th century begins, he finds himself entangled with political opportunists, spies, revolutionaries and an assortment of malevolent and dubious characters of both sexes. How will Billy handle those people and the challenges they face?

Another one of Ron’s earlier book release’s sounds so interesting.
I know I have used Kikkoman products most of my life as many of us have.
But I had no idea of the history behind the products. But Ron does and
wrote about it in “The Kikkoman Chronicles.”

About The Book:

The Compelling Saga of One of the World’s Oldest Companies.Combining ancient craftsmanship with modern technology and marketing innovations, Japan’s Kikkoman Corporation has quietly become a $2 billion market leader.

The KikkomanChronicles is the fascinating story of how Kikkoman changed the course of international marketing, shrewdly adapting to 20th-century realities while never turning their backs on centuries of tradition; how one man envisioned the future of the global enterprise, spearheading the first Japanese manufacturing plant of any kind on U.S. soil; and how generations of Mogi family leadership have produced one of today’s most formidable global competitors.

More than an authoritative how-to international business, The Kikkoman Chronicles is the spellbinding story of Shige Maki, the tough and resourceful woman who narrowly escaped the 17th-century siege of Osaka Castle to sow the seeds to today’s Kikkoman Corporation. Kikkoman’s survival and adaptation across more than 300 years of social and political upheaval in Japan.

Innovative strategies Kikkoman has followed to become the world leader in the production and marketing of soy sauce – an Asian staple. The Kikkoman Chronicles is a one-of-a-kind corporate biography. By combining anecdotes and stories about Japan’s amazing history wth hands-on tips and recommendations for proven international business success.

Ronald E. Yates has produced an entertaining book that should become required reading for business persons and students throughout the world.

I am very pleased and honored to introduce Author, Ron Yates to all my readers and book blog friends. Ron and I met over on LinkedIn. He sent me an invitation to join him on another social media site, one I hadn’t explored before. But, soon after he sent me a nice email asking about my book promo services. Now, after I took a gander at his bio, I said to myself, “I could I ever promote such a seasoned and professional journalist?” Yes, ok, I will admit and own the fact that I was crazy nervous! Then I thought? I can never make one mistake! LOL. LOL.

The fact of the matter is, Ron is a fabulous down to earth guy. And here I am book promoting for my new buddy. LOL. Let me share more about this fantastic writer and see if we can find out more about him and his new trilogy series. Book one and now book two has just released. “An Intimate Author Interview via SmashWords” . . .

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Probably when I was in the sixth grade. I loved writing stories and I had a teacher (Mrs. Gooch) who encouraged me. My mother also bought me books and took me often to the library–a place that I found mystical and magnetic. She often read to me and I could “see” the story unfolding before me. When I could, I began to read everything I could get my hands on. As I used to tell my journalism students at the University of Illinois, if you want to be a good writer, be an avid reader.

What was your inspiration to write the Finding Billy Battles Trilogy?

I grew up in Kansas and was always fascinated by what life was like there in the 19th Century when the state was still pretty wild. At the same time, I spent a lot of time in the Far East as a foreign correspondent and I was equally intrigued by what life must have been like in the 19th Century colonial period in places like French Indochina, The Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. Then one day I got the idea to blend the two using a character from 19th Century Kansas who goes to the Far East in search of himself.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a published author?

Try to write as much as you can from your own experiences. They are real and uncontrived and if you incorporate those experiences in your fiction your work will have a truthful ring to it. Beyond that, KEEP AT IT! Don’t let anybody (editors, agents, etc) discourage you. At the same time, be willing to accept constructive criticism from those who have experience as authors, editors, agents, etc. Notice I said CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Some people criticize just to be criticizing–or to be malicious. You must believe in yourself, your work, your vision and your story. If you don’t, who will?

What do you think makes a good story?

A good story needs a strong plot and even stronger characters. Otherwise, it falls flat. The writer needs to be first and foremost, a good storyteller. If you build a good story, THEY WILL COME, to paraphrase Field of Dreams. Make readers care about your protagonist. Make readers empathize, cry and laugh with them. At the same time, keep them off-balance. Don’t be predictable and don’t be afraid to do terrible things to your favorite characters. Have you ever known anybody who has sailed through life without some turmoil, some pain, some suffering? I haven’t.

Do you have any writing projects you are currently working on?

I am currently starting Book Three, with Book Two just released of the Finding Billy Battles trilogy. It will be ready for publication in February 2016. Then I will start on Book Three. After that, who knows. I may finally get around to writing about my own life as a war correspondent.

If your book became a movie, who would be your first choice to play the lead roles?

Clint Eastwood as the elderly Billy Battles; Clive Owen as the middle-aged Billy Battles and Ashton Kutcher as the young Billy Battles. I would pick Saffron Burrows for Billy’s first love, Mallie McNab and Famke Janssen for the widow Katharina Schreiber who Billy meets on the boat to the Far East. (Why these choices? They are all tall. Billy is 6’3″ and Mallie is about 5’10,” as is the statuesque widow Schreiber).

Tell us about your new release.

Book #2 in the Finding Billy Battles trilogy begins this chapter in Billy Battles’ life takes him to the Far East of the 1890s and places like French Indochina, The Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore. This phase of Billy’s life finds him mixed up with political opportunists, spies, revolutionaries and an assortment of malevolent and dubious characters of both sexes. In short, Book #2 in the trilogy takes Billy far away from his Kansas roots and out of his comfort zone. How will Billy handle those people and the challenges they present? It’s a question that you will have to read Book #2 to find the answer to.

Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?

Yes. I listen to Mozart, Haydn, Telemann, and Boyce when I am in a classical mood. When not, I listen to good “cool” jazz by people like Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, George Shearing, Bill Evans, etc.

How do you develop your plots and your characters? Do you use any set formula?

I write from the seat of my pants. I don’t outline my books and I don’t write down plot scenarios. I just start writing and see where the story and my characters lead me. It’s a lot like life itself. We may have a goal in mind, but the route to it is often strewn with obstacles, surprises, and sometimes tragedy. I usually write 3,000 or 4,000 words a day and I edit as I go. In other words, I may write a few paragraphs and then rewrite them within a few minutes of creating them. I don’t write a ‘First Draft.’ For me, that seems like a waste of time.

When I finish writing a book it is finished. I may make a few tweaks with the plot here and there, or alter a little dialogue, or some action by a character, but there is no second or third draft. I know some authors write a draft and put it away for weeks or months and then go back and look at it with fresh eyes–OR they send it out to be critiqued by professional “readers” or “critiquer’s.” Those strategies may work for some people. They don’t work for me. I guess it’s my journalistic training: see it, report it, organize it, write it and then move on to the next story.

Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
Back to Vietnam, Cambodia, and The Philippines–three countries I worked in as correspondent in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and three countries where Billy Battles is going to wind up living during the 1890s. While I know a lot of those places, having lived and worked in them, I would love to dig deeper into their colonial periods and learn more about life during that era.

If you could have dinner with 1 person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Winston Churchill. He was absolutely brilliant and I would hope by the end of dinner some of that brilliance would have rubbed off on me, though I seriously doubt it. ONE food you will never eat? Monkey Brain Sushi (yes, it is a real dish in China and I won’t tell you how it’s prepared). It is considered a cure for impotence (what isn’t?).

Another dish I will continue to eschew is Balut, which is a delicacy in The Philippines. It is fertilized chicken or duck eggs in which the developed embryo is boiled and eaten from the shell. Yum!

Which brings me to some advice an old Chicago Tribune copy editor named Spokely gave me when I was getting ready to leave Chicago for my first posting as a foreign correspondent. “You are going to places that serve strange food and you will be tempted to say ‘no thank you,’ when it is offered. Don’t do that. It will be an insult to your host. When somebody offers you something to eat that looks or smells horrible, just remember Spokely’s law: Everything tastes more or less like chicken.”

What was the scariest moment of your life?

There have been several. One was during the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. The last day was chaos incarnate. Russian made 122mm rockets were slamming into buildings, 130mm mortars were hitting Tan Son Nhut airport, and the U.S. Embassy was surrounded by frantic South Vietnamese desperate to get out of the country because they had worked for the American military or some U.S. agency. The city was all in full-panic mode. Several of us made our way to the sprawling Defense Attache Office building at Tan Son Nhut and we were finally evacuated by a U.S. Marine CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter. It was a relief until the door gunner told me later aboard the U.S.S. Okinawa that the pilot apparently had to drop a flare to misdirect an SAM-7 (surface to air missile).

Another was during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre when I and several Chinese students were pinned down near the square for 30 minutes or so by Chinese soldiers shooting in our direction. Several students near me were wounded and we were helping them get to a doctor’s house nearby so he could treat them. I was convinced I was going to wind up dead in the square. Then suddenly the shooting stopped and I was able to get my Red and White Sprick bicycle that I had chained to a lamp-post and peddle like crazy for the Jinghau Hotel where I was staying and from where I was filing my stories to the Tribune.

Yet another memorable moment was during the revolution in El Salvador when I and two German correspondents were stopped in our car near the town of Suchitoto by Communist guerillas. They put cloth bags put over our heads and forced us to kneel alongside the road. We were sure we were going to be executed. But suddenly the “jefe” (leader) showed up and we were set free. “Don’t kill journalists–unless they are armed,” he yelled at his troops. I was greatly relieved that I had left the 1911 Colt Pistol I had purchased a few days earlier back in the hotel in San Salvador. I believe it is still there.

Ahhh yes, the life of a foreign correspondent…never a dull moment. But I still believe I had the best job in the world and I wouldn’t trade my career for anything.

What books have most influenced your life?

Scoop, by Evelyn Waugh; The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck; The Quiet American, Graham Greene; The Jewel in the Crown, Paul Scott; Kim, Rudyard Kipling; Huckleberry Finn, Samuel Clemons (Mark Twain); A Passage to India, E.M. Forster; Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser; The Naked and the Dead, Norman Mailer.

Do you have a Website or Blog?

Yes, I have both. My website is Ronald E Yates Books and I am constantly updating it. My blog is http://ronaldyatesbooks.com/category/foreign-correspondent/ I try to post to it at least once or twice a week.

I also have an Amazon Author  page and a Facebook Author Like Page called Ronald E. Yates Books. I am also on Twitter @jhawker69 … Readers can also follow and connect with me over on GoodReads as well.

Do you have any advice for inspiring authors?

Don’t let anybody discourage you from pursuing this work if it is really what you want to do. Don’t be discouraged by rejection. You must believe in yourself, your ideas, your stories. If you don’t, who will? Certainly not that dense editor or literary agent who couldn’t see your potential or grasp your book’s storyline.

Is being a writer a gift or a curse?

It is a wonderful gift if you allow the process to come to you and don’t force it. However, don’t let anybody tell you it is not damned hard work. It is. The joy of writing for me is telling a good story. I don’t care about imparting a “message.” Nor do I care about creating any hidden “meanings” that some literature professor will hold forth about in a writing class when I am no longer around to rebut him/her. I just want to tell a good story. That, to me, is the ultimate gift of writing.

The curse is that writing can take over your life, isolate you from family and friends and turn you into a kind of sophistic recluse if you are not careful. Writers need to take breaks from working. If they don’t I believe they run the risk of becoming stale, self-absorbed, and misanthropic.

Where do you like to write?

I have taken over the upstairs bonus room in our house. It is about 500 square feet. In it, I have my rather prodigious library, a good sound system for playing classical music, a large screen TV for watching sports, the Discovery, History, and National Geographic channels when I need a break from writing. My window looks out onto a plant and boulder-strewn foothill that rises in front of my house. Another window looks down onto the Temecula valley some 2,000 feet below. It is quiet and soothing. Couldn’t have a better place to write.

What do you typically drink while writing?

Very cold iced tea.

What has been the toughest criticism so far?

None, so far. Though it is still early in the process. Someone did say they didn’t like the fact that the book is part of a trilogy because now they have to wait for Book #2. I like THAT kind of criticism.

And lastly, what has been the best compliment?

There have been several, but I will list just four here. You can find these and other reviews on the book’s Amazon page: “The is easily the best work of fiction I have read in some time.”

“There is something about this book that is almost impossible to explain, but it takes it from being a *good* book to a GREAT one.”

Is Your Company’s Social Media Expert Really an Expert? Here’s How to Know? By John White

.“So, You hired a social media expert for your business. But how do you know you hired the right one?”

It would seem that there are a lot of “social media experts” out there today.Social media arose quickly as a prominent way for businesses to showcase their brand. Anytime, a product or service enters into the marketplace quickly there are opportunists that move into space and become largely self-proclaimed experts. Hence, the rise of the social media expert.Just last week I had a college senior reach out to me over email about working at my social media marketing agency, Social Marketing Solutions. When I checked this person’s LinkedIn profile, there was no profile picture and it looked like it had been pieced together in between games of beer pong. Yet, when I scrolled down there it was, social media was listed as a skill.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of true experts within social media marketing. Many of whom I’ve met, been mentored by, and had the pleasure of seeing their work up close. These are the true experts that let their work speak for itself and their reputation as a guru spreads organically.

I’ve also come across my fair share of pretenders or self-proclaimed social media experts. These people talk a big game about their social media prowess but don’t back it up with results.

The problem is many entrepreneurs are unfamiliar with using social media as a marketing tool for their business. So, they may not be able to tell the difference between a true social media expert and someone who is hoping to fake it until they make it.

.

.

Can’t we just hire an intern for that?

Whether your company is going to hire someone or bring on an agency to do your social media, there are specific things to consider to make sure your social media expert is indeed an expert that can deliver results for your business.

What were they doing before becoming a “social media expert?”

It has been my experience that the best social media marketers have a background in something related to marketing or business development. People without it, have a harder time understanding ROI. They may not have the analytical skills needed to monitor the metrics that directly affect the company’s bottom line.

If you’re hiring them to support social media campaigns in a B2B environment and they don’t have B2B experience, it should raise a concern no matter how great that person claims to be at social media.

Check their personal pages for signs of influence

I’m always surprised by how many companies don’t actually do research into the person or agency’s social media pages. If your company is hiring someone to manage your Twitter account, and that person hasn’t tweeted in a month and only has 200 followers. Here are some red flags:

  • Their posts have low engagement levels. If they have low engagement on their posts, how will it be different for the posts they do for your company?
  • They don’t have many followers. If you are hiring them to grow your community and they don’t have one themselves, it should be a big warning sign.
  • They don’t have any recommendations on LinkedIn from clients for the services you are hiring them for.
  • They have a ton of Twitter followers but when you click on to see who is following them, they have a lot followers that are egg heads (no profile pic). This is a sign that they have bought their followers. They may lack the skills needed to create an authentic online community.

What do their client’s pages look like?

Also, ask to see examples of their client’s social pages. If they have examples of clients either in your industry or a parallel industry it is even better.

Read Their blog:

“Chances are if you are hiring a social media manager, they will also be doing some content creation for your company as well. Make sure to read their blog posts and get examples of content they’ve written for clients. Ask about where they’ve been published beyond their personal blog and where their clients have been published.”

Content marketing is not a fad and has disrupted the advertising world in a big way over the past few years. Your social media expert must be able to create compelling content that gets read.

Companies know that they must have a social media expert on hand within their marketing department to compete in today’s market. However, clearly, not all social media experts are created the same. The person or vendor you hire will make or break your company’s online presence  .  .  .

Which The Hell is it Jason? LOL. LOL. So, I am hoping you will learn a wee bit more about this interesting man of mystery we all may not know! Let me start with a few “Hot Seat” questions I asked Jason . . . .

*Hot Seat Interview Questions*

Cat – I and many readers know you are a very popular blogger, what is something readers may not know about you?

Jason:
“I think new readers may not realize that I am not popular at all. I have simply taken the time to meet and associate with a lot of bloggers. That is how you form online relationships and a community of your own. Popularity is just a word, in reality. you only get back what you give.

Cat
 – How did you decide to start book promoting for authors? Do you enjoy reading books?
Jason: “I do enjoy reading books, but specific books and authors. I simply felt it was easy to offer some authors a little help through my platform and I do sometimes feel bad for those caught in the struggle to get noticed.”

Cat
 – Have you ever considered writing a book? If so, what genre or type would you write?

Jason:
“I’ve considered it. I have a few in mind, but the first book would probably be a memoir in format.”

Cat – Tell readers a little about yourself?

Jason:  “I was born in Pusan, South Korea and was left on a street when I was 3 years old. I was adopted and lived my early childhood in Jackson, Mississippi which was… interesting. I moved to Memphis, TN around the first grade and although similar in some ways, Memphis was very different in others. My adopted parents are white. My mom is a writer and my father is a doctor, I have an adopted sister who is Korean as well, and I have a white adopted brother. I am the middle child.

I grew up playing competitive soccer, golf, and gymnastics. I hate baseball so I guess I will never be “American.” Something about small hard objects being thrown at my face does not appeal to me. I was never tall enough when I was younger and did not get picked often to play basketball. They would say “we will takkkkkkeeee… Cindy!!!” “DAMMIT!!!

Growing up with all white friends and black school mates was a bummer because I was generally in the lower 25% in height and weight. A fact that was readily apparent in physical altercations, but I will say that I gave as good as I got. I grew up white which really is simply the truth. I didn’t even eat Asian food, and yes I say Asian here because I wasn’t Korean at the time.

I attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and quickly went from a good student to a below average student. Mainly because for some reason to do well in school you have to attend class, a concept that passed me by. I did not do well in college mostly because of anger at my birth mom, which I discovered in 2000. I still have not met her or talked to her and she has kept me from ever meeting my older sister, whom I didn’t know existed till 2000 as well. It took me 12 years to move past that. I still like soju, though… so at least I have a comforting companion.
I enjoy writing, poetry, history, animal shows, ESPN, a few regular shows, and I also LOVE Anthony Bourdain. (CNN ) If I could meet him I would, he has inspired me in many ways. I would also love to meet Robert Jordan, W.E.B. Griffin, and Raymond E. Feist, my three favorite authors. Unfortunately, I will have to wait a bit to meet Jordan, RIP we will always miss you, Robert. Your light still shines.

Currently, I work in information technology under the yoke of ‘Corporate Rule’ … but maybe one day I will be able to be a real writer. Right now I do not consider myself a writer at all, in fact, I would say I am an amateur pretending to be a writer. I will accept the title of blogger though, that I suppose I have earned. I enjoy scotch, 12 years or even older if I can afford it. Famous Grouse is my favorite brand because it is cheap, but if I could drink Macallen every day I would. Unfortunately, my Crohn’s keeps me from drinking too much of that, probably a good thing.

What else… this is beginning to sound pretty frivolous. I like to debate and I admire conviction and passion in anyone. I dislike people who throw facts around without basis, or that try to validate themselves by throwing up hypothetical statements. That to me is the most annoying thing ever. I guess I am more human than I thought.
I currently live in Colorado with my wife and two daughters. It snows here. I hate snow. Anyways, that is pretty much me.

GOTTCHA JASON!!! LOL
.
Jason is such a good sport!. One last thing that is important I did ask Jason.

Cat – Where and how can readers and authors find what you offer with “Book Promotions” and how readers can find the books and author’s you promote?

Jason:
“I list my book promotion terms on my personal blog at https://aopinionatedman.com/book-promotion-terms/. I also show my current promoted books on my WordPress blog at https://aopinionatedman.wordpress.com/

YOU can also find Jason on social media too! On Facebook: Opinionated Man – -Opinionated Man Jason C. Cushman … – Facebook  And on Twitter: @SmokeNdust

.

So I thank Jason Cushman “WordPress Blogger Extraordinaire” for letting me put him on “Lyon Book Promotions Hot Seat” for a little while. I met Jason on WordPress years ago. He was actually a very nice blogger pal to me when I first started visiting his blog three years ago. Has really been that long? Wow. I took to his funny sense of sarcastic humor when some just “didn’t get it!” I love that he never holds back and shares just what he feels, and he shares a lot of his personal life through his blog like this post that touched my heart because I know how Jason felt:  Struggle To Feel “Accepted”  …

He knows I too suffer from a few mental health challenges myself and have also been in that complete “dark hopelessness” as he has. When he writes and shares about that part of his life, that truly is the “human side” of Jason. Not many can do that in an open forum like he and I both do on our blogs. So when I need a pick me up, all I do is go to Jason’s blog and find something there that takes me out of “myself” to me feel better!

So know this Mr. OM,  ….  my best-est “Cape Crusader”? Thanks for being such a great friend. Thanks for doing a ‘Fantabulous Job’ in your new venture of promoting my book and many authors I am sure “Thank You” for giving them a new book promotion platform for their books so readers find them. You really are appreciated in the “Blogging Community!!!”  XOXO

.

Author, Roger Stark writes addiction/recovery books, with two under his belt so far. His first release is titled;  “The Water Fall Concept, A Blueprint for Addiction Recovery.” His most recent new book has just released early June 2016 titled; “Reclaiming Your Addicted Brain: A Recovery GPS:  How to find your path to recovery and not get lost.”  Both books are available in e-book and paperback and sold online on Amazon.com, Amazon Kindle Store, and on the author’s websites: The Waterfall Concept  &  Reclaiming Your Addicted Brain .

Now one of my favorite social media places believe it or not is over on LinkedIn! This is where Roger and I connected. He sent me a message ‘begging me’ to help him promote his new book, well, …. OK, he didn’t quite beg, but he did ask about my promotion services! LOL. LOL. Here is more about both of his books and a wee bit more about him and his co-author, Irwin Morse  ….

About The Book Waterfall Concept:

This is an addicts owner’s manual. It is truly a blueprint for recovery. It is a practical description of addiction and what must be done to recover. Whether the struggle is drugs, alcohol, gambling, pornography or any other sexual addiction, it is all covered in this book. It is written with the understanding that only an addict/clinician can have It is the book I wish had been given to me the day I realized, I was in fact, an addict.

In my own recovery from addiction, in my studies which qualified me to practice as an addiction counselor and in my ensuing work with addicts, I have been taught. What I have come to understand is presented here.

Are you seeking to understand addiction or looking to find recovery? Please, let us help. Our goal is to help you understand the mess addiction is.

The Waterfall Concept, A blueprint for addiction recovery, is the new standard in LDS addiction recovery books. It provides insights that give understanding to addiction and well as solutions that lead to recovery. It was written by a recovering addict and trained addiction counselor who combines his life experience, education, cases studies and clinical best practices to produce a truly unique recovery guide.

About The New Book Reclaiming Your Addicted Brain:

Inexplicable logic is normal fare in addict land. Friends and family are baffled by the behaviors, antics, and thinking of the addicted one. Their patience, tolerance, and love are depleted quickly. Eventually, their empathy and compassion exhausted, they say the inevitable, “He will just have to hit bottom,” as they shake their heads and walk away.

The tool of self-destruction so effectively wielded by the addict is his own mind. The addict takes a perfectly good brain and, by relying on thinking errors, rationalization, justification, and every form of denial known to man, creates an addict where a person used to be.

“Reclaiming Your Addicted Brain” reviews the return journey from addict land, the learning of how to leave our thinking errors behind. Written around the recovery story of one man from alcohol and sex addiction, clinical notes, and comments appear throughout the story helping the reader to understand this baffling disease. Addicts report being able to see their own behaviors that were previously hidden from them when they are manifest in someone else. Reading George’s (the book’s addicted character) story and misadventures creates ‘aha’ moments of understanding that can open the doors to recovery.

This is definitely a “How To” book. George presents his “legs of a stool” analogy that eloquently describe the needed steps to recovery. The clinician’s voice adds step by step directions on how to gain the key ‘Skills of Recovery.”

“Reclaiming your Addicted Brain” is Irwin Morse’s first writing effort. Irwin writes about addiction and recovery from the perspective of his first-hand experiences. This book includes events from his life including his 26-year journey of recovery, some of those events successful, many not. He shares his experiences in an effort to be true to Step 12 of Alcoholics Anonymous: to reach out to the addict who still suffers. Irwin was born and raised in New York and has traveled extensively, including living overseas. He currently resides in the South and is an active supporter of both the AA and SAA communities there. You can learn more on his website: Reclaim Your Addicted Brain  . . . .

Now, I have been working closely with Roger for past the few weeks, and I can tell you he has a great sense of humor and down to earth. I just finished reading his first book, Waterfall Concept and my is it truly a guide to a successful recovery for those who are in early recovery. Great advice and resources in this book!  I also have just started his new book with Irwin, and so far it is an exceptional read. Here are a couple book reviewers take on just how well written and fantastic both books are!

Book Reviews:

WaterFall Concept:  Packed with helpful suggestions

Format: Paperback

“This is an excellent book, filled with information and suggestions to help someone as they struggle with addiction recovery.

Roger Stark is not only an addiction counselor and a recovering addict himself. He approaches this book with the same attitude required of anyone attempting recovery — humility. He offers so many tools in this book and covers all the bases: spiritual, emotional, physical. His suggestions progress from the easiest to follow early recovery techniques to more challenging techniques in later stages and the maintenance phase.

Stark clearly defines what an addict is and describes how they got to their place of addiction. I found it to be a good book for any parent who may have a child that is beginning to use drugs or alcohol as a coping technique for their feelings. I think many of the suggestions could be used as preventative tools, not only as recovery tools.

Stark is positive and encouraging throughout the book. He helps put relapses into perspective so they can become learning experiences rather than stumbling blocks.

What I loved most about his book is that many of his techniques are helpful overall life skills. Anyone can benefit from learning and incorporating the suggestions for coping, self-care, and expressing feelings.

The book had a lot of grammar and punctuation mistakes that made the reader have to work a little too hard. But it was well worth the effort. I strongly recommend this book to anyone, those who are currently in addiction recovery, parents, or anyone looking to become healthier emotionally.

Review of Reclaiming Your Addicted Brain:  “Great Resource

Format: Kindle Edition

“This is a great book about the addict brain and the crazy rationalizations. The book does a great job of helping everyone see how an addict convinces him/herself to act out and not see anything wrong with it. The author offers great advice and sound steps on how to combat this faulty thinking and behavior. I would highly recommend for anyone suffering from addiction.”
