“Reviewed By Vincent Dublado for Readers’ Favorite
If poetry benefits our well-being, then we should immerse ourselves in appreciating this age-old art form. Reading Dark Tides: Poetic Reflections of Life by Rev. Dr. Kevin T. Coughlin Ph.D. has a therapeutic feel to it. This fifth collection of poetry delves into human struggles dealing with emotional and mental pain with strong leanings toward the healing power of faith. Reverend Coughlin’s poems have relaxing rhythms that are at times hypnotic.
He writes with emotions that reach out to others who are undergoing similar struggles. The Christian undertones blend well with the imagery as illustrated in one of his poems, “Perched.” Here, the tree is used as the representation of life and death, and that these very same trees are used to make coffins—until a Jewish carpenter has set our souls free.
Our lives are filled with stresses that test our mettle to the limit to see how much we can stand, and sometimes, getting through the day is triumph enough. Art and spirituality are potent forces that can help those with the fewest resources to cope and adjust better to life, and Dark Tides does just that. Rev. Coughlin, however, cautions his readers that his poetry is for educational and informative purposes and not as supplementary material for clinical treatments.
Still, after reading this book, one cannot dispute that the themes of isolation, betrayal, self-revelation, and search for meaning contained herein may help to facilitate the transition into a happier way of life. Whether you are personally spiritual or not, this collection of poetry can give you an idea of perspective and wisdom in dealing with the cross that you bear.”

About Cynthia Ulmer
Award-winning Author, Cynthia Ulmer is a medal-recipient writer of her Southern Family Fictional Series, “The Cedar Cove Chronicles” a Christian themed fiction series about family life, love, faith, and endurance. Her titles are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and many online bookstores and released between mid-2009 through mid-2015. Books one and four are Medal-winners by ‘Wishing Shelf Indie Book Awards.’
“Some people struggle with what they are meant to do in life and others just know it all along. I’ve known since I was a small child that I wanted to write–the stories were always in my head.” The Cedar Cove Chronicles is a series set in the fictional community of Cedar Cove, North Carolina, and follows the lives of ‘The Jansan Family,’ their friends and neighbors during the 40’s and ’50s.
Here is how Cynthia describes her fictional light Christian theme drama …

Todd is my first introduction to Ulmer’s work and now understand why it became a fantastic award-winner. I look forward to reading the whole series of ‘The Ceder Cove Chronicles’ after reading Todd as it holds your interest in what is to come next being a family saga and unique enjoyable book!
The story of a fictional family set in the 1940s – 1950s when times were much more straightforward. The Jansan family goes through many trials and storms but holds steadfast to their Christian faith and beliefs as they learn they can endure any storm together as a loving caring family. I am not a big fan of heavy religious reads, but this story has just the right amount as not to be overbearing. Todd is well written, well-developed characters. Watch out for Grandma Cal, a vibrant ole coot!
The story overall pulls you in with family drama, surprises, and a lot of love. Even as you learn about their neighbor, who is a very nasty mean drunk and is a constant that made me feel lucky I don’t live next door to Horace! (I’m not too fond of spoilers) …
I was, however, privy to know that the author had woven in some of her cherished childhood and family memories of family living in the south, which I feel. made this book even more special to read. It has a historical feel to a fictional novel that has you engaged with only an area or two where the flow could have picked up a bit.
While reading Todd, be ready to experience more love, some laughs, a tear or two, and feelings of loss of old fashioned family values and discipline that many of us grew up within like ‘Old Southern Americana.’
Cynthia Ulmer’s novel “Todd, The Cedar Cove Chronicles, Book One,” if it does nothing else, it should make you think. It is a novel about violence: domestic, social, and cultural, against the backdrop of war. I did not see this work so much as a Christian novel as I did a novel about human frailty.
The story is related through the engaging voice of Todd Jansan, a ten-year-old boy living in rural North Carolina with his farming family. Being a “southern” novel it has the ubiquitous southern quirky character, Grandma Cal, who keeps a gun with her at all times in order to shoot whatever she feels to be a threat, i.e., snakes and bears. She’s not a good shot, but that’s part of the quirkiness.
The novel takes place during the early forties, during the time of the Second World War. Todd’s Uncle Clyde returns home from the European Front after having been severely wounded. His return is problematic as is nearly everything for this family, but that is understandable. Times are hard. The family lives next door to a most hateful man whose idea of punishing children is brutal.
As the title of this review suggests, I found the child’s voice narrating this story to be believable, heartfelt, and engaging. Another big plus for this book is the window it provides into family life for a small farming community during World War II. It’s a fresh perspective. So many World War II books and movies I’ve run across go more into the battles and bombs, the politics, the atrocities of the Nazis, the efforts on the home front in support of the war—all of which are important aspects that help us understand life during that time. This book, for me, is a welcome addition, something else to think about.
Another positive is the ongoing and escalating conflict between the narrator’s family, the Jansans, and a neighboring family, the Hammonds. I was very much emotionally invested as the plot unfolded. Very good read and well-written!
In this series, TRUDY has finally escaped her torturous marriage to Mark Gideon, with it she brings her son. However, now a new potential flame has entered her life in the form of Todd, the protagonist from the first book in the series. The book details the struggle Trudy and Todd face to be together, as well as Mark’s slow descent into madness due to his realization of his new situation. The subject matter is raw at times, but it’s thoroughly grounded in a situation that could happen to any of us. Bravo! Great read.
A woman finds herself in an abusive marriage after eloping with her sister’s boyfriend. Six years later, she returns home to face her family and mend fences.
This is not my typical wheelhouse, family dramas aren’t something that I’ll read regularly.Still, I liked the concept of the returning black sheep of the family trying to patch things up. The amount of detail in the opening chapter alone really paints a painful picture of an abusive marriage and it’s genuinely chilling.
Ulmer’s writing style is very easy to read and this book seems to stand well-enough on its own so reading the other books in the series doesn’t seem to be a big issue. This is definitely not going to be for everyone but definitely give it a read if you get the chance because it’s most certainly worth your time.
The story begins well with Trudy escaping from her terrible husband and her journey home to her family. I enjoyed the book, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the many errors. In some places, (like chapter 10) there are repeated paragraphs. This was an enjoyable novel
Clyde and Wanda is the 2nd of a 6 book series. I didn’t know that initially but the book stands on its own very well. That said I’m looking forward to going back and reading Todd, book one.
Clyde is a good man. Now.
But he has a past to overcome ad war experiences he must reconcile. He has married Wanda and is striving to live a Christian life. Everything seems to be going well but there is the everpresent fear of his anguish returning. Wanda has her own childhood traumas that keep the reader involved and interested. This is a lovely and hopeful book about family life.

Voyage Phoenix we’d like to introduce you to Life Coach and Author, Maureen Scanlon.
Maureen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Just like everyone else, I’ve made some bad choices and decisions that I now know were learning lessons to allow me to be who I am today. I was married at 18, a mother at 19 and found myself in another country away from friends and family. I had chosen a difficult path as I was then alone with a husband in the military and in a domestic violence marriage with an alcoholic. I figured I had “no choice” but to stick it out. I was raised by parents who believe, “You made your bed, now lie in it.” Through the difficult times, I always knew I was worth more, but I didn’t believe it based on my day to day circumstances. ……
One day, I finally got the courage to divorce my husband and raise three children on my own. Two of my children had struggles, one with ADHD and one with Bipolar Disorder. I had financial struggles, emotional stress, and health issues as I tried to parent alone. I continued to be in relationships that served someone else’s needs and allowed the abuse to continue. I had two bouts of cancer (Cervical and Skin), and I was walking with a cane at one point! Through it all, I would always talk to people about their problems. I loved helping people in spite of my own strife. My children used to call me the “counselor” and send all of their friends to me if they needed some encouragement or help.
……
As my children were finally growing into adults, I decided to take my life back! I realized I needed healing from childhood, marriage, and all of the negative experiences I had incurred. It took two years to figure out my worth and realize I had dreams! I met my twin flame, now husband, Dennis and realized what unconditional love looked like for the first time in my life. While on our honeymoon, I noticed people would always come up and talk to me. I love talking to people, sharing their stories and finding similarities in our lives. This is where I had my epiphany… I would become a Life Coach and help people learn to love themselves as I finally discovered I could!
…….
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We all have programming from our childhoods and past hurts. The human brain is wired to protect us from pain. The hardest part of beginning this dream was getting out of the comfort zone I had created. I had to fight the fear of the unknown and all of the past beliefs that I’d developed throughout my life. Believing in ourselves is the most challenging thing to do! Am I good enough? Will people want to come to me? Am I too old to start a business? Every day is a new endeavor and I have learned to take baby steps and give myself the mercy and compassion I have for others. ……
I learn from those I coach and teach from the experiences I have had. Sometimes, all they need to hear is “You are amazing, and you are enough!” Life coaching is a new concept, so this is how I explain it when asked what I do. Life coaching is a new approach to figuring out who we are and why we act and react the way we do. I don’t dwell on a client’s past, we touch on it, then move forward with positivity, tools, techniques, and goals to help you achieve happiness and peace.
……
……
……. Maureen Scanlon Life Coaching – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition? …
As I started growing my coaching business, Maureen Scanlon Life Coaching, I took photos for the website. One day, I showed my best friend and she said, “I see this picture on the cover of a book.” I have never aspired to be an author, in fact, I always felt my verbal was much better. But… in following where I was being led in my new journey, I simply said, “I guess I’m writing a book than!” …..
And I did… in eight weeks to be exact and I had published within four months. “My Dog is More Enlightened Than I Am” came to life as I watched my dogs daily and realized what a beautiful and uncomplicated way they live. They love, have fun, and show compassion in amounts far greater than humans. The book is an inspirational and fun guide to teaching us to live from the example of the unconditional furry friends we share the planet with. ….
The most rewarding part of my business is the feedback and responses I receive. I also create retreats, group coaching, and women’s events. From these events and personal coaching, hearing clients say that I’ve changed their life, they are living their dreams, finding their worth, and breaking lifetime habits is such an incredible feeling! ……
My mission and purpose in this lifetime are the moral behind the Starfish Story. A little boy is walking along the beach throwing starfish into the ocean that had washed ashore. An old man tells the child, there are thousands of them, you’re not going to make much of a difference. To which the little boy tosses another starfish and says to the man, “It mattered to that one.”
…….
Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up? ……
I always felt like I was different from everyone else. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I remember swinging on the swings at 6yrs old and pondering about what my life would be like. I felt I didn’t belong in my family, and that no one really “got me.” I always felt like I was a lot of trouble, and honestly, I sometimes was… I was very aware of how everyone felt and would say or do something funny to make everyone laugh.
“I always felt life should be fun.”

…….. ABOUT THE AUTHOR ~ By L. Scott Pishko:
Dave Howard: Learning The Hard Way
Inventive, determined, inspiring.
Award-winning local children’s author, David Howard could be considered all of these and more. Born on an unusually hot spring day in 1974, Dave M. Howard came into the world and before long he was struggling to see what the world had to offer. He was prescribed glasses at age four and his world changed from a fuzzy, confused world to a world that was clear, but somehow still confusing. His humor was an outlet as he asked such questions as “Wow, is that what aunt Verna looks like?” and “Is that what grass looks like?”. Dave was soft-spoken, but an easy-going child who took to art and storytelling as an escape from the world of restrictions to a world where he could become a superhero, dragon or whatever his imagination put on paper.
Once Dave started school, he had trouble reading and writing and was placed into a special class that catered to children with learning disabilities. What the school did not know was, he had A.D.D. (attention deficit disorder) Asperger’s and dyslexia. The combination of disabilities and attending the special classes at school left him open to harassment and bullying by other students within the confines of his personal prison. The walls closed in around him as he knew he was too smart for these classes, yet couldn’t pass the mainstream curriculum presented to him. Dave’s hindrance was he couldn’t spell correctly because as he puts it “ I would get things backward in my mind”.
“His life was about to change with a gift from Father Christmas himself, Santa Claus.”
Every kid, young and old alike, anticipates Christmas. That magical holiday where anything can happen and dreams come true. This was especially true for young Dave Howard in junior high school. He trudged down the stairs to find many glossy wrapped presents with bows and strings. The sparkle of the Christmas tree reflecting from young Dave’s eyes as he tears into the first few presents.
With Christmas music playing in the background, he thinks he’s finished when his dad states“ “There is one more present left, check it out.”He pointed out a white envelope nestled in the tree. Dave opened it and saw a clipping of a word processor. “where is it?” Dave asked. His dad pulled the processor from the back of the couch and handed it to the youngster. Dave opened what would become the catalyst to open up his confidence as a storyteller and creator of children’s books.
This machine turns his imperfections into a workable palate, a clean slate to turn into whatever he wants it to become. This machine was a word processor. This word processor had spell-check and became the answer to all of Dave’s creative prayers. He was able to use this machine to do his homework and as Dave said: “It opened a new avenue to my world and it was one of the most influential presents I received”.
Before that point in his life, the only artistic thing he did was draw and paint. He began to create new worlds and stories, as he puts it “The stories just flew off the top of my head and on to the keyboard”. He says this with a smile and not a little relief. By the time he graduated from Ringgold High School in 1992, Dave had produced stories in many genres including westerns, science fiction, horror and his current work, children’s stories.
With his newfound confidence and with amazing talent to tell a story he traveled to Pittsburgh, PA to attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. While attending the school, he found a love for the editing program Photoshop, which he will continuously use for his illustrations for his books in the future. After he graduated with an associate’s degree in Visual Communications in 1995, he looked for several jobs, but they kept telling him he needed job experience; even though no one would give him a job to obtain that experience.
Frustrated, Dave then attended the California University of PA and joined every creative class he could. He excelled in classes such as illustration, stained glass, sculpture, printmaking, and pottery – not bad for a guy who was “learning disabled.” All was going well for Dave and then the first tragedy in his life would strike as he was just building his confidence as an artist. His best friend committed suicide in April 1999 and send him into a downward spiral that would take a long time to pull himself out of.
In 2009, his niece was pregnant with her daughter and was celebrating by having a baby shower. Dave remembered he had a poem about a dog set aside and he thought that would be a cool present to give to her. The more he thought, the more he wanted to turn it into a children’s storybook for her baby shower. The book was a big hit and was appreciated very much giving Dave a shot in the arm to continue his talented storytelling.
Sadly, his great-niece passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (S.I.D.S.)when she was two months old. In an effort to cope with the loss, Dave put his nose to the grindstone and rewrote the book that became “Lady’s Day To Play”. The book became a talisman for Dave and he dedicated the book to his great-niece and donates a portion of the sales of his books to S.I.D.S. research. Once Dave regained focus he became driven to create more and more stories.
…….. ……
After“Lady’s Day To Play”he wrote numerous books. He produced“Mouse In The House”, “Baby Ben Did It Again”, “ The Cloud That Couldn’t Cry”, “Sandy Claus the Christmas Cat”, and he published “Morgan To The Rescue!”written and illustrated by Morgan Barnes. He also illustrated “Legend of Rain Day”for Isabel Linnie Fox.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Dave”, he tours local schools, libraries, festivals, and universities reading to the masses and giving children advice on how they can create books from their imagination. Uncle Dave was reading at Monongahela Library when a woman walked up to him afterward crying. He remembered her quickly; she was his Learning Disability teacher from high school. She was so proud he persevered and overcame his disabilities.
Recently, Uncle Dave Howard read at the Barnes & Noble store in West Virginia and is making progress on his next volume of books including a Halloween book and rewriting his Christmas book “Sandy Claus the Christmas Cat.” He also was featured on the Waynesburg University television program “Greene Room” and was a finalist in the Best Books Awards for Children’s picture book softcover fiction.

I am so excited to have been invited by Coffee Time Romanceto take part in their interesting Blog feature surrounding me and my work, answer your questions – hopefully, you will have lots to inquire about in different areas – and I will be most happy to accommodate you as best I can.
I have loved to write but did not get the chance to seriously do so until 2001, when I threw my hat in the ring and began to write with the intentions of seeing where it might take me. I am not professionally trained in the field, but I have always possessed a natural flair for expressive written word accompanied by an endless imagination to support them. I self-published my first title in 2009, my first poetry collection, titled Feelings: A Rhythmic Journey in Thought. This title – which unfortunately is no longer available – was the first of twelve titles thus far.
I write in four genres, poetry, children’s short stories, adult comedy, and romantic fiction drama – my favorite genre and the one for which I am best known.
