Here is a special message and article from a great place I enjoy receiving awesome advice to pass on to all my book clients I promote. As authors and writers, we all know that book sales and reviews don’t happen over night. It takes a long while to build a readership and a social media presence. Many new authors get discouraged so early in their book promoting efforts. But the BEST ADVICE I had ever received was from my own publisher. And? He was exactly spot on of what he shared with me . . .

“It takes many months, days and hours of promoting your books. And it won’t happen overnight. It takes many, many tireless hours to promote ones book effectively.”  I found he was right. It took me a good year of non-stop promoting my first book before it caught fire!  But when it did? So many awesome doors opened. And my social media followings were growing too! So, for those who don’t always take advice at “face value”?

Marsha Freedman is a long-time PR Professional for The PR Insider, and in this article she shares what it takes to promote your books and yourself as an author to get those book sales! My Publicity and Promoting Is Solid, So Where Are My Book Sales?

“I see this scenario played out too often.”

Authors launch a PR campaign, they get a few impressive hits in print, on the radio or on TV, and they sit back expecting the book sales to come surging in. Sometimes they do. But just as often they don’t.

Why? The reason is simple: Getting media and social media exposure is just one element involved in an overall marketing plan. While public relations on occasion can lead to direct sales, it’s really a branding tool, a way to get your name out there so you can then leverage your newly acquired recognition into bottom-line rewards.

That can take time. Even a mention in a top-tier publication, such as the New York Times or USA Today, has limited impact if everything stops right there or you don’t get additional traction out of it by linking to the article on your website or sharing it on social media channels.

While there is no marketing strategy that can guarantee huge sales, there are certainly steps you can take to improve your odds.

  • A professional-looking blog or website: Your website could be your first interaction with readers, and they will make a judgment about you and your book based on what they see. Online is also where the majority of book buying takes place these days. If your website isn’t well-designed, easy to navigate with well-written copy that encourages a visitor to become a customer and want to buy your books, it’s almost worthless. Visit other professional websites & blogs and compare them to yours. Identify the positive elements their sites have that you should incorporate into yours.

  • A marketing plan: Marketing plans cost nothing to create and the simplest plan is better than none at all. Your plan will include answers to these questions: Who is your target audience? When will you start and how long will you continue marketing? What kind of publicity or promoting will you need to make people aware of your book? Will you advertise, and in which media? Is your audience using social media networks and, if so, which platforms?
    .
    A clear message: You need to have a clear message for your intended audience of readers and you need to be able to articulate the essence of that message. By the way, that message should be about what you have to offer your intended audience, not the other way around. Way too often in my experience authors believe their message to the consumer is, “Buy my book.” That may have value for the author, but it has none for potential readers. What do people stand to gain from reading your book? Does the information you provide entertain them, solve a problem for them or assist them in some other way? Your message helps fuel your marketing plan.
    .
    A budget: At the very least, you will need a small budget for things like hiring a website designer if you don’t already have one. You will want to buy books from the publisher to send to the media. Other expenses may include travel, postage and working with a PR professional. Even if you don’t hire a PR firm, you’ll at least need a budget for hiring a book and social media person to help you get the word out.
Just remember, publicity is an ongoing enterprise. The more you keep your name and your book’s title out there, the greater your chances of success will be over the long haul.

IN HONOR OF INDIE AUTHOR’S DAY!

DOG BONE SOUP is the long-awaited “rest of the story” of Shawn Daniels from the original short story, “Pure Trash.” It’s particularly long-awaited for me because as soon as I read the short story, I wanted to read this book. The only problem was, Bette hadn’t yet written it.

But she did it. Dog Bone Soup is available for your reading pleasure. And what a pleasure it is.

Bette has the purest, freshest writing style I’ve read in many a long year. Reading her prose is like peering into an exceptionally clear, deep pool. It looks like the bottom is close enough to touch, but those waters run deep.

Bette Stevens is a class act, an author who knows how to tell a story. Her characters are real, so true to life, they practically leap off the page. In Dog Bone Soup, style and the story are blended to perfection.

I’ve read a lot of books about rural poverty and for some reason, all those stories are set in the south. This is as far from south as you can get. It’s a timely and important reminder that poverty is not a regional issue.

Poverty is everywhere, from the biggest cities to the hidden hamlets where tourists never go. Children pay the highest price.

Shawn Daniels’ story is wonderful. It’s about growing up and coming of age for a poor kid from a dysfunctional family. His world is cold and hardscrabble. A drunken father, a vanishing mother. Foster parents with no love to share, teachers who can’t see past patches and frayed cuffs. Yet somehow Shawn forges a road of his own. Armed with courage, intelligence, humor, and grit, he grows into a strong young man with solid values. He creates his own future.

Sometimes, very little can be enough.

There’s nothing depressing about this story. How come? Because Shawn Daniels hasn’t a shred of self-pity in him. Despite the challenges he faces, Shawn is never down. Not depressed, discouraged, broken, or beaten. This kid has grit. Determination and a solid grip on his own worth.

Where does it come from? Mom, sometimes. A few others who see Shawn’s value and give him a hand along his path. A personal, hard-wired toughness that lets him see past the life he is living it to the life he wants — and for which he is willing to work. Mostly, it is Shawn’s own sharp intelligence which enables him to understand his world. It lets him trust his judgment without bogging down in unearned guilt. He makes smart decisions.

It’s a great story — and it’s far from over.

I read a wonderful kindle short story recently by J.A. Owenby about a girl whose mother has clear mental health issues. The story is not a lecture. It offers no diagnosis or cure. It instead depicts the struggle faced by its protagonist, a teenage girl named Lacey, and presents a very real and poignant picture of the frustration and ambiguity that can threaten to immobilize anyone a conflicted, ultimately chaotic predicament. It’s very short, only 99¢ when I downloaded it, and well worth the read. . . .

This book, a collection of short stories, is something different. During the past two years, while writing the three novels now published as E-books on Amazon.com/books, my mind was constantly plagued with fragments of ideas for short stories. Some were so demanding, I had to push aside the novel I was working on to write that particular short story. During these two years, I’ve written 48 short stories. The stories themselves are quirky extracts, partly from my own experiences and partly from people around me. Most have a surprising twist at the end, which probably confirms how I see life. About The Author
I am a writer, currently misplaced in Northern AZ. I grew in North Jersey.I’ve been writing for about ten years on and off. I’ve sold several short stories and articles and I have my blog. I’ve just recently self-published my first novel, Jersey Justice.

I have one child left who hasn’t escaped yet. I like to read, watch too much TV, wear my heart on my sleeve, and over examine situations that haven’t occurred yet.

Oh, and I eventually want to save the world, but lack of super powers are making that a difficult job.
Have you always wanted to be a writer? Why?
I always loved the thought of being a writer, but never imagined actually doing it. One day I saw an ad on Craigslist for short stories and I thought, what the heck. I submitted and it was bought. That lit my spark again.Then I wrote the book and couldn’t find a publisher or agent. Several years passed and self-publishing became so easy that it was time to take another shot.

So I did!

About The Author and Writer:
Rod is a new indie author that is a native of South Carolina. He started writing in 2012 and enjoys writing stories and decided in spite of coming from a place where it seemed few people dared to dream big, he would fulfill his dream to be a published author. So he finished his first published novel, “The Confessions of a True Womanizer,” earlier 2015 and immediately sought ways to spread the word of his first Romance Novel.

Rod was featured on the talk show, “The Logan Power Show,” in September 2015. He talked about his childhood growing up and how he was introduced into writing. Rod is committed to health and fitness and living a positive life. It is his personal belief that the way you keep yourself up on the outside reflects who you are on the inside. In his spare time he enjoys reading, writing and listening to music of various styles, but favors Smooth Jazz and R&B. He also commits to motivational speaking and anything that has a positive role in his life and the lives of others.

And sorry ladies, his committed, . . . to his two little daughters. LOL.

1.) How did you decided to become a writer and publish your work?
Well, when I was a little kid, I had always written short stories in Comic Book form. As I got older in my teenage years, I wrote music. Eventually I got back into writing stories and didn’t publish my first Novel until May 2015.

2.) What is the most challenging part of writing books as a writer?
My most challenging part from personal experiences, is trying my best to get the reader to vision what they are reading.  My writing style is different from others.  I’m so cautious on producing the best work that I critic myself so hard on making sure my readers are visualizing and enjoying what the novel.

3.) Have any advice or words of “wisdom” to share with new authors? My word of advice to any new authors is to NEVER give up on what you are doing. I have felt like giving up plenty of times, but I kept going hard. Your book sales are not going to happen over night,  but it will come if you stay working hard. Success isn’t handed to you. It’s all about staying consistent and working hard. Your time will come. Only the strong survive as writers.

4.) What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you since becoming a published author?
Well, one of the most exciting things that has happened for me is being apart of a book club that featured my book.
I was a host at their book club meeting, signed books, took pictures and all. That was the first time in my life I experienced something like that so that’s the most exciting so far! It was fun.
