Just in time for the holidays, I welcome my dear friend and now first time Author, Dustin L. John and his book release of: “A Walk in his Shoes” . . .

Now if this is not exciting enough for my best recovery supporter of mine, but he also contributed some of his addiction and recovery story in another new book release with other authors along with Author, Jake D Parent…
It is titled; “Hearts and Scars: 10 Human Stories of Addiction” . . .

.

.About Hearts and Scars:
.
We lose more than 350 people every day in the United States to addiction. This collection of stories shows how the deadly disease is a conflicted struggle, not simply of broken people, but one that encompasses the human condition that affects us all.  The book consists of two sections. The first is a series of short fictional stories that portray individuals suffering from active addiction. The second is made up of real life tales of recovery, written by the people who experienced the journey themselves.
.
For those directly affected by this horrible affliction, these stories will help you make sense of your journey, both where you came from as well as where you are going. For advocates, policy makers, and others with the power to help, this collection will help humanize the issue. Because, while addiction may be a cunning, baffling disease, it is ultimately one that affects real people.

Only by understanding the humanity within those who suffer from it – as buried as it may sometimes seem to be – can we as a society find the courage and will to finally do what needs to be done to end the suffering.

Dustin L John
.

About Dustin The Author:

Dustin John was born and raised in Gallup New Mexico. At age 11, he moved to a small town in Southern Utah. Leading a seemingly normal lifestyle after graduating high school, Dustin’s life took a turn for the worse. A short time after a divorce lead him to bankruptcy, his life began the slow dive into addiction.

By age 22, he was jobless, homeless, running from the law, and searching for his next shot of heroin. Travelling across the western states in search of a safe haven, Dustin landed himself directly in the midst of a massive underground drug ring. After a decade of playing on death’s doorstep, Dustin made a miraculous escape into sobriety. Dustin and his father, Dallas documented Dustin’s drug riddled history in a uniquely written, father/son memoir titled “A Walk in his Shoes”.

Dustin’s father Dallas, passed away from an aggressive illness just months before the book’s final manuscript was published. Dustin has been sober since February 1, 2012 and continues to help in the fight against addiction. He resides in Southern Utah with his wife and their many reptiles.
.

About Dustin’s New Book Release:

Dustin’s life was once full of joy, happiness, security, and success. With a lucrative job, a wife, and a home of his own, he was destined for a life of fortune, prosperity and comfort. That was before heroin. This unique and gripping tale is the first of its kind to tell the story of addiction through the eyes of both father and son.

Together, Dustin and Dallas shine a blinding light on the dark life of a junky. As Dustin decides to travel across the western states in search of a safe haven, Dustin wanders within a few footsteps of his own demise. Instead of finding freedom, however, his addiction cascades into corruption, deceit, and evil. As alcohol and drug abuse continues to ravage every community in America, this groundbreaking memoir offers important insight into the inner workings of an active user, as well as the pain of those loved ones who must helplessly stand by as the family structure disintegrates from addiction . . .

Now of course I am NO James Lipton from ‘the actors studio’ but I had a few burning questions for my old friend to make him feel like he was “sittin on the HOT SEAT” a little bit. LOL.
But he handled the answers pretty damn well! …
.

My Burning Questions for Dustin:

1.) I know you are a fantastic blogger and write there, but what made you come to be a writer and share your recovery? —
“The main reason I became a writer is because I knew my story needed to be told. Studying addiction issues in the US made me realize that my experience with addiction could help other families and the only way I could get my story out to the world was to put pen to paper.”

2.) Who inspires you in your recovery? (Writer, Author, etc.) —  “My father was a great inspiration. He was not in recovery but he co-authored my latest book and told the family side of my addiction to heroin. He died of an aggressive illness months before we were able to publish the final manuscript. He was a photographer and a columnist at a newspaper for many years. I decided to dedicate the book to him.”

3.) Was there any fear around sharing your life in book form for the world to read about your addiction and recovery? —  “There is massive amounts of fear in publicizing my story. Many times in the editing process I felt like minimizing what I did while telling my story. Once I realized that my fear was a boogeyman and a great gauge for honest writing, I began to embrace that fear.”

4.) What can you reveal personally about yourself that readers may not know about you and any advice to others in recovery? —  “As a second hobby I breed exotic reptiles. I can also say my ABCs faster backwards than I can forward. One piece of advice I would give to the recovery community and to everyone as a whole would be to learn who they are and where they came from. There is nothing more helpful for gaining happiness in the world than self-knowledge. Taking an objective view of your childhood is the most powerful practice towards freeing yourself from dysfunction and other harmful human attributes.
Dig deep. Be open and honest. Connect. As Socrates said “know thy self!”

#1.
Anything For Amelia: A true story of...
Release Date: September 3, 2015
Kindle Edition

About The Memoir:
A true story of the challenges endured by two gay men who had the desire to adopt a child.

When Andrew and DJ decided to adopt and bring a child into their lives, little did they know what they were about to endure; yet never did the thought cross their minds to give up. The horrific, pitilessly, and beyond comprehensible hoops one woman would make them jump through demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that little Amelia was going to be much better off in the loving home that Drew and DJ could provide her. Just when you think, how can two people survive such a nightmare and the journey is just about over when little Amelia is born and will be safely in the arms of her loving dads, Sandi decides to pull one more shenanigan that could change their lives forever. . .

Fact:
More than 10 million adults have been adopted or fostered in their childhood. Along with spiraling increases in adoptions comes a growing need to disclose the significant flaws in adoption laws that open the doors to fraud, manipulation, and abuse of the system. “

AMELIA is the first book to explore this dark side of the adoption process through the true story of one couple’s journey through hell. Called “the most difficult adoption in U.S. history” by adoption experts, the book appeals to nearly all families (traditional and non-traditional) interested in adoption, foster parenting, or surrogacy.

About Andrew Branham:

(Andrew, DJ, and Amelia)

Andrew C. Branham was born in the culturally rich town of Lorain, Ohio – a few miles West of Cleveland and on the shores of Lake Erie. He is the son of two educators and has an older sister that lives in Michigan.

Andrew attended Lorain High School and then proceeded to get his bachelors degree from Bowling Green State University. He majored in environmental science with a minor in business administration. He graduated at the top of his class and earned a cum laude degree.  He is a business professional and works as VP/Senior Director Customer Marketing at Dawn Food Products. Here is a bit more of his professional life.

“I specialize in building best-in-class, high-performing category development, sales and shopper marketing departments (including building from the ground-up and reorganization for optimal performance and profit).  High-caliber, seasoned and passionate sales/marketing professional with expertise in internal/external sales, category management, sales leadership, national account leadership, trade marketing, category development, customer marketing, shopper marketing. I have 16+ years of progressive experience with increasing responsibility at top CPG organizations.”

Upon graduation, Andrew entered the business world working for a major food company. He quickly climbed the corporate ladder and was soon promoted. As his career continued to flourish, he relocated to different cities 12 times (all over the United States). Today, Andrew is an executive working for a food company out of Jackson, Michigan. He is married to his long-time partner and they have one daughter.  In his spare time, Andrew enjoys family, cultural dining, reading, writing, Cleveland sports, and exotic travel. He has traveled all over the world to experience other cultures and religions. His favorite destinations are Costa Rica, Oman, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Italy, and Bora Bora. One interesting fact about Andrew is that he once inherited a truffle farm in Froslone, Italy (of which he has since sold).

Andrew was inspired to write his first book, Anything for Amelia after he went through what many industry experts deemed ‘the most difficult adoption in U.S. history’. During his 206 day ordeal he kept a daily journal from which the book is based. It is the first memoir that explores the true dark side of the adoption world. His book has earned high praise from critics that appreciated the ‘dark subject matter’ and candid tone.

Andrew is a large supporter of gay rights, human rights, adoption, and foster care. 20% of his profits from the book are being donated to the foster care system. He also financially supports an orphanage in Thailand.  Andrew is currently working on his first fiction novel which is due to be released in early 2016.

Now as many of my readers know, I only ask a couple of questions of all my Featured Guest Authors, so we can get to know a wee bit more about them.  So here are the questions I asked of Andrew, and what he wanted to share with all my readers. . . .
.

Andrew Branham

1.) How did you become a writer?
I have always had a passion for writing and find it as a great way to relieve stress. I wrote my first book when I was 25 years old however I never did anything with it. For most of my adult life, I have been very active in writing Op-eds for major newspapers around the country. For the most part they were political columns but I have also done some LGBT and business writing. Recently, I have contributed several business articles to Linked In. Writing has always come naturally to me and it has just become part of my everyday life.”
.
2.) What made you decide to Share Your Adoption process in Book Form?
“My partner and I went through what industry experts called “the most difficult adoption in U.S. history.” For 206 days we were abused, manipulated, and tortured by a very unstable birth mother. We were both under enormous levels of stress everyday. It got so intense that it became nearly impossible for us to sleep or even have a normal life. One night while we were visiting the birth mother in Arizona our stress levels became unmanageable and we were about to lose control. I became so tired of keeping all my feelings bottled up and I started to write everything down in a journal. I wrote for hours without stopping.
.
When I was done I felt like a new person and all the stress was lifted from me. From that day forward, I started keeping a journal with the hope that I would compile it all into a book. Our story was so extreme that I wanted the world to know about what happened to us. I wanted other couples who were hoping to adopt to learn from our mistakes. The ‘business of adoption’ is a taboo subject that most authors are afraid to discuss. There is a true dark side to the adoption process that everyone seemed to want to sweep under the rug. I wanted the world to know that while most adoptions are smooth and most birth mothers are wonderful people – there was abuse going on in the system. Our birth mother made a career of ‘selling infants’ and using couples who were blinded by the promise of a baby. I felt that our story needed to be told so that others did not fall into this trap. I wanted others to see the warning signs and do their homework before making any final decisions about their adoption. I also wanted to use some of the profits from my book to donate to the foster care system.”

3.) What should readers know about you personally and as an author?
“As a person and an author I am very blunt and transparent. My writing is usually bold and candid. I try to state things like they are without ‘beating around the bush’. I am very passionate about writing and I hope to have a long career writing books. I am from a large and very tight Italian family and that is where my values are rooted. Family is very important to me and that is why I was never going to let being born gay stop me from having the family I always dreamed of. Nothing was going to stop me from this dream….not even this birth mother. I am married to my long-time partner DJ and we have a beautiful little girl, Amelia. She is the light of our lives and she always makes us smile and laugh.
.
We both adore being parents and it has made our lives whole. I am a big advocate of human rights and gay rights and I fight that battle nearly every day through writing. I am also a supporter of the foster care system and adoption in general. Since 2006 I have financially supported an orphanage in Thailand. In our spare time we love to travel to exotic locations that involve nature. Recently, we purchased a new home in Michigan that has 31 acres of pristine nature reserve. We hope to adopt another child in the next few years. Lastly, I am in the process of finishing my first fiction novel which should be ready in 2016.”

A Mother’s Day Special Guest Author Spotlight! I Welcome Author, Rusty Blackwood to ‘Lyon Book Promotions.’

Happy Mother’s Day Friends and Readers!

11195265_10155410487455123_1242167820_n
Miss Carson Doan of C.E. Doan Photography.

Today I welcome Author, Rusty Blackwood to my book blog. We have been friends for quite sometime now. She happened to share some special news with me to share with all of you, my fabulous readers! But before we get to the good news, let me share a wee bit more about my good friend Rusty . . . .

About The Author:
Top ranking romantic fiction author Rusty Blackwood believes the flair for fantasy is anything the mind wishes it to be, and she is a master at this. Within her expressive mind is found an endless array of romance, passion, textures and colors to sweep the reader to exotic, faraway places where anything is possible, proving that her words really do leave you breathless.

Canadian born Blackwood grew up on her paternal grandfather’s farm in south-western Ontario, Canada, where she developed her love of writing while still in grade school, entering numerous competitions and writing exhibitions throughout her area, and attributes her love of writing to her late father James, and to Gladys Carroll, her elementary teacher. Although unprofessionally trained in the field, Rusty has always had an affinity for the written word, a gift to express it, and has demonstrated this talent many times since becoming a serious writer in 2001.

She has written an eclectic array of contemporary and traditional poetry, publishing her first collection in October of 2009 entitled, “Feelings: A Rhythmic Journey in Thought,” which was later re-released in a second collection with additional content in 2011 under the title, “Impressions: A Poetic Rhythm in Emotion”. Feelings was followed in April of 2010 by a collection of assorted short stories for children, as well as the young at heart, entitled, “Young Minds,”  which was later re-released as a second collection with additional content in 2012 under the title, “Through the Eyes of Innocence.”  In March of  2012 Rusty released the short-story comedy, “The Misadventures of Derwood Tugbottom.”

Following a previously hard-fought, misguided, and misleading publishing road into the competitive world of main-stream fiction with her first two-part romance/drama, ‘Passion in Paris’– Connections to the Past and Directions of the Heart respectively – Rusty was finally given the chance to accomplish what she had originally set out to do, and this exciting reprieve can be found within the pages of her new heart-touching romance/drama, “Passions In Paris: Revelations of a Lost Diary,”  now available at the online bookstores of Create Space, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon worldwide. This beautiful romance novel is expected to be followed by the romance/drama, ’Willow’s Walk.’

The 5’1″(154.94 cm) spunky redhead is often asked how much of herself is found in her heroines, and she has been noted to say a fair amount, adding that most writer’s inspiration comes from many different aspects of life experience and reaping from them all that one can to use to one’s best advantage, so in that respect she would have to say that many sides, aspects, and flavors of her heroines derive from her own personality and life.

Rusty has always loved the Arts in their many unique forms and this is demonstrated in the two Interior Decorating and Design diplomas she holds, as well as her many years spent on the south-western Ontario stage performing with her family’s country music band, The Midnight Ramblers, and the country rock – blues band, MIRAGE  respectively as an accomplished vocalist, bassist, and rhythm guitarist.

Rusty firmly believes in going after what she wants, doing whatever is required to make it happen, and turning a deaf ear to anyone who says it cannot be done. She has faced many challenges throughout her life, emerging more determined with each, but make no mistake about her methods, for she is a firm believer in Karma and the adage that whatever you put out in life revisits you, so be sure your intentions are proper.

Ms. Blackwood now resides in the cultural city of St. Catharine’s, Ontario and when not at her keyboard, enjoys art, music, nature, gardening, and spending quality time with family, friends, and her loyal cat, Tipper.

Now here is her most current book titled; “PASSIONS In Paris, Revelations of a Lost Diary.” It has gotten Rave Reviews!
And this isn’t her first rodeo either. She has several wonderful published books released. Here is a little about “Passions In Paris” . . .

.

1.)  How did you know you wanted to become a writer, author, and editor?

I have loved to write since childhood. I always enjoyed English class, both English Comp, and English Lit, but my greatest enjoyment came from English Composition. It was there I could let my imagination soar and take me to wonderful places where anything was possible. I can remember numerous requirements in class with regard to writing a short essay, full length compositions, critiquing one’s work, understanding the reason behind another writer’s choice, that sort of thing, whatever the teacher’s requirement in English was on any particular day, and I well remember my excitement entering whatever piece I’d written into county fair competitions, assorted literature gatherings, and trying my best to hold my own among the imaginative pieces awaiting the judge’s final word. So many talented young writers in my area, and I was just happy to be among them and have my work before those who not only loved to read, but whose teachings and critique meant so much in helping each of us to improve. It all helped to build a better basis for each written piece that was to follow.

As strange as it sounds, writing wasn’t what I set out to do as a career, therefore I was never professionally trained in the field, but because of my affinity for the subject, I developed a keen sense of manipulating written words where I could express my feelings in a much better way than expressing them verbally. I would write assorted short stories, compose poetry, keep a diary, that sort of thing, but in 2001 I decided to try my hand at writing a novel. This decision stayed with me over the course of ten years which resulted in the writing of the original two-part Passion in Paris.

I self-published the first part, Passion in Paris: Connections to the Past in 2010, the second, Passion in Paris: Directions of the Heart in 2011, but I was never satisfied with the final product or the self publishing company that I had chosen to publish it,  so I terminated my contract and pulled my work. In 2012, after finding a new publishing outlet, I had the opportunity to totally redo the story in one book, which was the way I had originally intended it to be done in the first place. The finished novel, Passions in Paris: Revelations of a Lost Diary, which I am extremely proud of, was released  in the summer of 2013. With regard to publishing any of my work, I decided at the beginning to take the self publishing route because I wanted to maintain direction of my work, as well as the Rights to it, and not have to sign either away in order to obtain a publishing contract with a Standard House.

It’s a hard road; then again any road in this field can be difficult regardless of the route chosen because nothing is certain, you just have to believe in yourself, your ability, and be sure you research every aspect of it as well as you can. When it comes to editing, I do tend to feel one improves in this area with each written piece, and I have managed to acquire a fair understanding with regard to it, however I don’t consider myself an editor in any way. I do edit my work to a certain degree as I go, but I leave the main editing to the professionals.

2.)  What is the “Best Thing” you enjoy about being a writer & author?

I love the challenge of a blank page, and letting my thoughts and imagination pull me into it. I very much love creating characters that I can mold and give life to, insert them into a world that I have created for them, and watch them flourish within it. It becomes entirely my own world where I’m in charge — most of the time that is — as characters often have a way of taking over and demanding their own way, their own words, and their own actions.

This often directs a story down a far different road than you started out on. But it’s a great feeling to watch a story that has formed in your head come to life on a page that in turn becomes a complete book. As an author you hope it will bring enjoyment to the reader, hopefully as much as it brought you to write it. I can only speak for myself and what best works for me, but I basically write for myself and my enjoyment. I think a lot of writers do, because without the enjoyment that it primarily provides, the first page would never get written . . .

I Welcome Authors, Shaaren Pine and Scott Magnuson and Their New Book Release, Torn Together.

Torn-Together_books
New Book Release . . .

I am so honored to welcome ‘Two New Authors’ here to Lyon Book Promotions!

Please meet Authors, Shaaren Pine and Scott Magnuson. Now to be honest, we all will learn more about their amazing new book release, and a wee bit more about them together. Scott happened to reach out to me to see if I could help promote their fantastic new book, and of course I said yes. Why?

Because it is a wonderful book about addiction, recovery, and about one family who thought they were not strong enough to weather this storm, but they did! And with the family in tact! It is an inspiration to share their story of ‘Triumph,’ and help promote their new book release.

Now most all my readers know, I live life in recovery as well, and I enjoy sharing these types of reads. So lets learn more about the book titled, Torn Together: One Family’s Journey Through Addiction, Treatment, and the Restaurant Industry.

Now your most likely wondering why the topic, and the word ‘Restaurant’ is in a book about addiction and recovery right? So let me start there, and I will tell you why, by sharing with you a wonderful newspaper article about them, about the book, and the restaurant, and how they give back to help others from addiction through their business.
.

Argo_00129

“Recovering addict and Washington, D.C. entrepreneur is dedicated to challenging restaurant culture. Owners of The Argonaut Restaurant & Bar, (In DC) fight to support restaurant workers struggling with addiction.”

WASHINGTON – Scott Magnuson and his wife Shaaren Pine co-own The Argonaut tavern.
After twice being recognized as one of the city’s best bars in Washingtonian magazine and twice finishing runner-up in the Washington City Paper’s “Most Family Friendly Restaurant” award, it is obvious that they know what they are doing. What is not immediately obvious is that one of the best bars in the nation’s capital is run by a recovering alcoholic and drug addict.

In their new memoir, “Torn Together,” that the couple has co-written—Magnuson and Pine describe the bumpy road that led to Magnuson’s recovery after battling addiction since he was 14 years old. Their two perspectives join together to form a very real and intense testimony of struggle to save both their family and their business.

“We need to take the shame and stigma off of addicts,” said Pine. “Addiction is a medical condition, not a moral failing. Unfortunately, it is also a disease that infects everybody in its path. Because of that, everybody caught in addiction’s web needs help – not just the addict.”

Now that Magnuson and his family are in recovery, he and Pine have mounted a double pronged attack in the battle against addiction. They are doing what they can to let people who are struggling know that they are not alone. They are also trying to bring attention to restaurant culture’s permissive attitude with regard to drug and alcohol use in the workplace.

“Those who work in the restaurant industry know that there is a lot of use of drugs and alcohol,” said Magnuson. “Not everyone does it, of course, but those who do are often allowed to by their managers and bosses. Ignoring this behavior not only hurts these people and their families, but often ends up hurting the business as well.”

In addition to changing the culture within their own restaurant, Magnuson and Pine have also created a nonprofit called Restaurant Recovery that seeks to assist restaurant employees who would like help in finding and paying for reputable drug and alcohol treatment programs. It also helps the families of restaurant workers, seeking to both challenge and change restaurant culture.
– – –
So now we know why the word ‘Restaurant’ is part of the book’s title, and how Shaaren and Scott give back through their business to be of recovery service to others. Now more about their new book and as authors.

About The Book ~ Torn Together:
Torn Together is a memoir, written by recovering alcoholic and addict husband, Scott Magnuson, and codependent wife, Shaaren Pine. Torn Together chronicles Scott’s addiction as his illness infects everyone around him, his eventual treatment, and the recovery process the whole family undertakes. It is also the story of The Argonaut, one of revitalized H Street, NE’s first restaurants, the struggle to get off the ground, rebuild after a terrible fire, and to keep going as the family is falling apart.

About The Co-Authors:
Scott Magnuson has been doing two things longer than most: Working in bars & restaurants, and drinking & drugging. An addict at 14, Scott got his first job in a bar – an industry that would allow him to focus on his first true loves, drugs and alcohol.

It was a good life, for a while. Evading the law, skirting the consequences of his actions, and leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. His world finally started crashing down around him 18 years later, and he was on the verge of losing his family, his business, and himself.

That was July 12, 2011.

Now, with several years of recovery under his belt, Scott is continuing his career in the restaurant industry, and is dedicated to helping others out of addiction’s darkness. He is also the president of the CHAMPS, the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce.

Shaaren Pine has learned the ins and outs of the restaurant business since starting her first restaurant job in 2005. Now, as a manager and business owner, and with help from her Earlham College education, she is committed to bridging the gap between business and community, and changing restaurant culture. Shaaren is passionate about adoptee rights, and advocating for the families of addicts. She writes about her adoption from a social justice perspective, and about addiction through a spousal lens.

Together, Scott and Shaaren run two businesses, have created a non-profit*,  and serve on two boards, and are raising their daughter, Ara. The family lives in Washington, DC, and this is their first book.

Amazon Reviews:
By Claude Labbe on March 11, 2015 Format: Paperback

“If you thought your life is going through some drama and the prognosis is hopeless, then you’re ready for this roller coaster read. Most rides have ups and downs; Scott and Shaaren’s story is simply down and down more. This is an autobiography which was the only hope I had that the story would work out well. Life doesn’t tie things up in neat bows, especially for addicts and alcoholics, but life and this book did get much better at the end. If you, or someone you love is living the hell of addiction, grab this book to share the struggle and the victory Scott and Shaaren speak of.

Media Book Reviews:
– Rishard Rashke ~ Author of “The Killing of Karen Silkwood”

“Torn Together is a brutally honest, courageous and uplifting story about the descent into drug and alcohol addiction, and the determination to save a marriage. It’s painful and funny. It will make you cry, laugh, and cheer. And it will draw you into a world you hear about but rarely get the chance to see. Highly recommended.”

–  Joe HeimWashington

“This hard-to-put-down book is a scaring, unrelentingly honest and touching portrayal of lives in the balance. Scott and Shaaren tell the tough and wrenching story of their lives together, their battles with fierce demons, their determination to see their marriage and business work and their realization that recovery is a never-ending process, not a destination.”

A Special Blog Review ~ Mom’s Choice Award Winning Book Titled “Failing At Fatherhood” By, Jack Barr.

.
Failing at Fatherhood: A book for the imperfect father
.
MY BOOK REVIEW FOR MOM’S CHOICE AWARD WINNING BOOK:

My breath was taken away many times while reading Author, Jack Barr’s book titled: Failing at Fatherhood, A book for the Imperfect Father.
While reading this book, it took me back to 2011 when I was writing my own now published book. It was a way for me to heal, inform, and raise awareness of what I felt I had failed in life with addiction. Jack to has done a similar thing here in his own fantastic book about his reaction to the news about his beautiful daughter Marley.

It is a raw, honest, and open look at one man’s faults when learning that his 3 day old ‘Marley’ has Down Syndrome, and how he reacts to this news. Even those with a strong “faith” can be rocked by such news.
We then tend to feel and think it was our fault some how that this has happened to “my child”.
Jack’s book shows us all as the human people that we are. We are not perfect by any means, we do at times react before we think things through, and we are a work in progress for a lifetime.

His open heart, spilling out all his faults is a very brave thing to do, even in our society when men are taught or raised to be strong, not to show feelings or emotions. Jack is like any other man.
My heart hurt many times of his deep sharing, and raw account of his story. Like one reader mentioned in their review, this book will take your on an in-depth emotional journey. And that is how I felt when done reading this well written book. I enjoyed his writing style, and like I did, take the reader on a journey.

And you could read the rawness when he wrote of Marley. She is now a vibrant, sweet little 3 1/2-year-old darling that you will also fall in love with!! If she doesn’t to it by her photo on the front cover of the book?
Reading more about her in Jack’s book will!

Jack has done an exceptional job at Raising Awareness of Down Syndrome with his first book. I hope he continues Marley’s story, and the families in future books. It truly is worth the time to read. And why I give it a 5 Star * * * * * Review.
.
About The Book:

Winner of a Mom’s Choice Book Award”

“Why do I fear her so much? Marley is my own flesh and blood, yet I lie here silently as a new father wondering if I will be here in the morning.”

When Jack Barr and his wife, Jana, had their first child, they were overcome with joy and excitement. Three days later, as they prepared to leave the hospital, two doctors entered their room debating whether newborn baby Marley, had Down syndrome. Mixed in with the confusion of whether or not their daughter was chromosomally different, Jack and Jana knew their lives would be changed forever.

Failing at Fatherhood embraces Jack’s honest struggles as a father, after receiving his child’s diagnosis of Down syndrome three weeks after her birth. He excavates the past, examines the present, and explores his future life in a sincere attempt to understand his personal failures as a father during his first year of parenthood. Throughout the book, Jack wrestles with the decision of divorce, suicide, and the existence of God. However, with His ultimate direction, Jack is able to understand the significance of fathers being committed to their children.

Since that day, Jack and Jana have rerouted their plan to align with God’s plan. They started, If They Had A Voice, an awareness campaign that focuses on Down syndrome abortions. Their story has been featured on CNN, CNN Mexico, Life Action News, and The Insight Channel. Jack has also released his first book, Failing at Fatherhood, which has been endorsed by Bob Russell, S.A. Now they have a voice!

“When my daughter was born, I told my wife I did not want her. I spent an entire year depressed because I believed everything society told me about having a daughter with Down syndrome. Now she is the joy of my life. She is not a monster, she is not ugly, she is not retarded, and she is not a burden on our family. She is a beautiful little girl that brings joy to our daily lives. I understand the fear of having a child that is different, so I want to encourage you to consider taking the road less traveled, and see the beautiful things a child with Down syndrome can show you.”  Award Winning Author – Jack Barr .  . .

Write to Serve Others – A Writers Write Interview with Jack Barr

“If you have ever struggled with the path your life has taken, if you love someone who has Down Syndrome, if you doubt the reasons you life has come the way it has, I think you’ll appreciate the words of Jack Barr” . . .
.
1. Tell me about your latest project.I have recently written my first book, Failing at Fatherhood.  It was released this past November.  A publisher contacted me about two years ago after he read my article about our family on CNN.  He encouraged me to write a book and share my story with a broader community. That led me to writing Failing at Fatherhood.

2. What role, if any, did books, writing, and reading play in your childhood?

I was not an avid reader growing up.  My parents encouraged me to read, but I was more interested in outside activities.  After I became a Christian in college, reading became more important to me.  One author that encouraged me in my journey was Tony Campolo.  His book, Carpe Diem, opened my eyes to our calling as Christians and the needs of others around us.

3. What is your writing practice, your writing routine?

Since I have finished my book, I occasionally blog.  Usually I blog when something in the news or my life strikes me as an interesting story to share with others.  Recently I wrote about Brittany Maynard and Lauren Hill.  I shared my own thoughts about their stories and my personal experience of watching my father die of cancer when I was eighteen years old.

4. Who are you reading now?

I have three authors that I follow on a regular basis: Michael Connelly, John Gresham, & Ken Follett.  I enjoy “getting lost” in their stories and taking a break from my other responsibilities.  I also read various Christian authors when I find a topic interesting to me.  Right now I am working through a devotional book entitled, Conversations, by Brian Rice. . . .

*Now for the rest of this wonderful interview by, Andi Cumbo? Please visit her fabulous ‘writers website http://t.co/xz909i0u6M the rest of Jack’s interview is really interesting.*

I hope you enjoyed my new review for Author, Jack Barr, and make sure you connect with The Barr Family and see how they are helping many parents and families who also have children with Down Syndrome, and sharing Hope with them!

Update of Author, Jack Barr Along with Jana & Marley Barr’ Raising Awareness of Down Syndrome One Book at a Time.

Hello and Welcome Readers, Friends, and Visitors,

.

Failing at Fatherhood: A book for the imperfect father

.
A while back I had shared a ‘Author Spotlight’ of Author, Jack Barr, and his wife and daughter, Jana & Marley Barr.
Jack’s book had just released on Barnes & Noble, and on Amazon. This is a very special family, and close to my heart as well. Jack & Jana’s little girl was born with Down Syndrome. And Jack’s book is about sharing his feelings when he came to find that little Marley had this disease. Here is how Jack describes the feelings he felt a few days later when their Doctor told them Marley may have Down Syndrome ….

About The Book:

“The day my daughter Marley was born, I went straight to the nursery and held her for well over two hours. I just held her and cried because I had never experienced such a love for anyone or anything in my life. I think the nurses thought I was crazy because eventually they told me I needed to go be with my wife. Three days later, before we left the hospital, the pediatric doctor told us she thought Marley might have Down syndrome. My reaction: Are you freaking kidding me? I immediately had a panic attack.”

Thus begins the brutally honest account of a new father who struggles with his faith, his family, and mostly himself as he comes to grips with the prospect of raising a child with a disability.

The author, Jack Barr, does not hold anything back as he shares his questions and his pain. Through a process of understanding, love, prayer, faith, and support from others, the author’s perspective changes and he comes to realize the beautiful blessing that has been given to him and the privilege it is to be a father.

“Failing at Fatherhood” is indeed a book for the imperfect father and it will help any parent who may be struggling through a crisis of faith. By sharing Jack’s story, one will grow in their perspective on life and God so that they may better understand their own role as a parent and spouse”.

.

.
Now, through his new book, Jack has been able to help, mentor, and share his story as a fathers point of view when getting such devastating news of a child, his child with a life threatening illness. I know what it is like getting that type of news myself. My husband Tom and I have a niece on his side that was born with Down Syndrome. And she has had a pretty tough life with surgery’s and leukemia. But today, she is doing well and brings all of us such joy!

So I know how difficult it is for the Barr family. They have done a such an awesome job Raising Awareness of this disease, and have helped many families that to have kids with down syndrome. So I wanted to share some important updates on what they have been up to, and some really wonderful things have been happening since the release of the book as well. Here first is a little about the Barr family. And if you have not yet read Jack’s book titled; Failing at Fatherhood, A book for the imperfect father … I urge you to order yours today and be inspired how a tragic illness can bring Faith and Blessings to a family like the Barr’s …

Jack and Jana Barr are missionaries in Bangkok, Thailand.  Before their first date, they both knew God was calling them to serve overseas.  After completing their undergraduate degrees at Johnson University, and their graduate degrees (Jack M.Ed. Regent University, M.Sc. Canisius College/ Jana M.A. Lee University) they flew to Bangkok for the first time.  For the past nine years they have served God by teaching at the International Community School in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Jana and I wanted to be self-supportive and earning our graduate degrees provided us with that opportunity.  But beyond that, the graduate degrees we earned prepared us to teach and live cross culturally.  Our college courses forced us to step outside our comfortable environment of teaching first language learners and embrace second language teaching.  Most importantly, our professors prepared us for a chaotic life of change that accompanies living overseas.”

Now, … A New Publisher Press Release For “Failing at Fatherhood” Author, Jack Barr …

F o r  I m m e d i a t e   R e l e a s e —- …

Failing at Fatherhood: a book for the imperfect father to be released by Trinity Grace Press in November

Orlando, FL / October 13, 2014 – Trinity Grace Press is proud to announce the forthcoming release in paperback and as an e-book for the Amazon Kindle, the Apple iBookstore, and the Barnes & Noble Nook, of  Failing at Fatherhood: a book for the imperfect father  by Jack Barr of King, North Carolina. The release is scheduled for November 10th.
.
Starting with an article on CNN, the author, Jack Barr, tells his deeply personal story as a new father who learns that his child has Down syndrome. The resulting fear and anxiety quickly overwhelms him to the point where he takes drastic actions that are vividly recounted in his book Failing at Fatherhood. His calling to be a missionary in Thailand alongside his wife serves as the backdrop to this story of failure—but also one of redemption because the glowing embers of his faith compel him to change his path and become the father that he is meant to be.

Dr. Woodrow Kroll, former president and senior bible teacher of Back to the Bible International had this to say:

Raw.  Emotional.  Honest.  That’s Jack Barr, wearing his emotions on his sleeve, in his book Failing at Fatherhood.  If you’ve ever been traumatized by the birth of an imperfect baby, if you’ve ever found yourself in the pit of despair questioning God and wondering how you will cope, the story of Jack, his wife Jana, and their precious little Marley will not only touch your heart, it will wrench it.  But there is hope in their story—the hope that only a good God can bring.  Read Failing at Fatherhood and prepare to be changed.

John McClure, senior editor of Trinity Grace Press, states, “When I first read about Jack’s story on CNN, I knew that we had to help get his story out –one of redemption through God’s grace. For we have all failed but Jack is just more honest about it than most of us. The key is not giving up and to accept God’s mercy and to go forward with our mission in life. Jack’s book helps us all see that and understand it better.”

Failing at Fatherhood  (ISBN: 978-1-940145-30-3, Trade Paper, 164 pages, $13.99, Non-Fiction/Christian Life/Family) from Trinity Grace Press, will be released November 10, 2014 but is available now for pre-order.

About Jack Barr Jack and Jana Barr started the If They Had A Voice awareness campaign that focuses on the beauty of Down syndrome children. Send The Light Product Stocking Philosophy:

Send The Light is a ministry that attempts to serve the reading, listening and teaching needs of the diverse Body of Christ.

There is but one Body, there are also many members with varying needs and Biblical interpretations. Therefore, not always knowing what may benefit a believer or further the Kingdom, we seek to carry a wide variety of religious, inspirational and even theologically neutral products (e.g., many children’s titles and reference works).

Some members of the Body (including our own employees) may strongly disagree with some of the items we carry, but we will not intentionally carry any item that is patently anti-Christian in its authorship or its message. We agree with the often quoted 17th century tract written by theologian Rupertus Meldenius which says, “In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.”
