“We are honored to share a brand new author and his new book with all our friends and readers! Please meet Author, Aaron Emerson, and his new book release, “To Hell and Back: Heroin and Recovery” . . .his personal story.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
.

I was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania but have lived in Mason, Michigan since I was two. Mason is a small town outside of Lansing and is a place I have grown to love. I have a dog named Charlie that is around 11 or 12 years old and I love sports and reading. I have a girlfriend named Alison, a five-year-old daughter, and a wonderful, supportive family.

My fascination with books began about five years ago, actually. I started out reading a lot of mystery books, mainly James Patterson. I really got interested in them and now I am an avid reader. It was around that time that I started journaling, as well. I really fell in love with the ability to put my thoughts on paper and it became a positive outlet for everything I felt and thought. My interests are all Michigan sports, again, reading and all about Recovery.

A lot of people don’t understand that addiction to drugs is a disease, and the person that’s addicted turns into someone different and almost unrecognizable. Though the decisions to take drugs in the first place are usually horrible, life changing mistakes, no addict goes into experimenting with drugs thinking they would become addicted.

My addiction took me to jails, rehabs, and almost killed me several times with overdoses and accidents. I lived a life of regret, but I finally turned to God and made the decision to do whatever was necessary to get sober. It was a very long, intense, and hard journey, but I pulled through. I really hope my new book will help people not make the same decisions I made, raise awareness on addiction, and show readers that if you are alive, hope is alive, as well.

Aaron Emerson grew up as the son of a successful minister in Mason, Michigan. Blessed with a loving, caring family, he had the makings of a great life. At 14, however, his dad was unexpectedly fired from the church he helped build, right after the tragic passing of his cousin.

Aaron turned to marijuana and alcohol, finding pleasure in covering up the pain he was experiencing. A year later, he was introduced to prescription pills and eventually became addicted to oxycontin. Once oxycontin became too expensive and hard to find, he made the decision to switch to a cheaper, more potent drug: heroin.

Heroin would take Aaron through a life of hardcore addiction, lengthy jail stints, and several near-death experiences. After years of addiction that saw a once middle-class teenager turn into a felon and become homeless, a journey to find recovery transpired.

That journey took Aaron to several rehabs and through many heartbreaking relapses. However, recovery from his addiction was ultimately found, and now he shares his story around the state to raise awareness and spread hope.

Throughout his addiction and recovery, Aaron journaled and wrote about all of his experiences. He has now published his journal entries full of addiction, jail, rehab, overdose, relapse, and recovery. This book is the collection of all of those writings that shaped his life for several years . . . .

So, many of my readers know I just ask all my authors a few questions about them and about their writing, and here is what Aaron had to tell us.

1) How did you become a writer, and made you decide to write, publish, and share your testimony of addiction and recovery in written form?
“About four or five months into my recovery from addiction, I got an overwhelming desire to share my story with people. I have always loved writing so I came up with the idea to start a recovery blog. The main goal in all of this was to simply let others know that recovery from addiction is a reality and a possibility. I wanted to spread hope and raise awareness. People seemed to get a lot out of it so I have been doing it ever since.”

2) What do YOU think is the most important “Skill or Tool” that aids you in recovery?
“I think my most important skill or trait in recovery is my ability to lean on my support system. That was so crucial when I first got sober and I’m certain that without my recovery coach, my family, and my girlfriend, I would not be sober today. I also was heavily involved in 12-Step groups. I still do all of those today, but in early recovery, support groups and my support system were pretty much my whole life. Being able to open up and know when and how to ask for help was vital.”

3) Now I know you are a brand new Author, has there been one thing you can share exciting that has happened to you as an Author?
“Yes, I am a very new author. “To Hell And Back” is my first book and it has definitely been the most exciting thing to happen in my writing career. However, getting a significant amount of positive feedback on my blog has been the next best thing. It really makes my day to read, or hear someone tell me that they got something out of my posts.”

4) And lastly, what ONE word in ‘recovery terms’ is your Favorite to use?
“I’m not sure if this will technically count as a “recovery term,” but the phrase ~ “let go and let God” has always inspired me. Leaning on God throughout my recovery has been overwhelmingly comforting. Hearing or seeing that phrase always reminds me that, no matter what, things will be okay if I just let God take over my life.”

.

“Lizzie, a small-town waitress, thought she’d finally met her prince charming in Dr. Grant Chatsworth. She was young and in love, and the quick courtship ended with the four-carat diamond engagement ring of her dreams.”

Now residing in one of Buckhead’s finest estates, Lizzie soon learns all that glitters is not gold. Her handsome husband, renowned cardiac surgeon, and developer of a new congestive heart failure drug was becoming cruel and controlling. Lizzie finds herself captive in the vast expanse of his estate without a phone or a car, and under the watchful eye of Flossie.  When Lizzie discovers that her husband’s drug development company is a Ponzi scheme, she realizes that her life could be in danger if she doesn’t somehow escape the gated mansion on the hill.

With her parents deceased, her only hope is to get to Biloxi, Mississippi and seek refuge with her sister, Maggie. Maggie and her husband Leland quickly find a safe harbor for Lizzie in a house on the bayou. However, the house at the end of the street might not be the quiet retreat Lizzie was hoping for.

The confines of her hideaway soon get to Lizzie so she begins sneaking out in the middle of the night to walk in the historical cemetery next door. One night a damaged, carved lamb on top of the tombstone of a small child catches her eye, and the story of the child immediately captures her heart. Just when Lizzie Chatsworth thinks her world can’t get any more complicated, she finds herself in the middle of a mystery from the 1800’s that is pulling her in and demanding she seek justice.

As her husband’s empire begins to crumble, he’s more determined than ever to find Lizzie and kill her. But, will the mystery of Baby Belle’s death end Lizzie’s life first?

1.) When did you start writing? And how did you come to be a writer and publish your work?
I’ve always been an avid reader but an illness in 1999 made me homebound. It was then that I started writing for therapy more than anything. Years later, family and friends encouraged me to pursue publication.

2.) What type of career did you have before becoming a published author?
“I worked in many capacities in county government, but lastly in grant writing before my illness.”

3.) Do you have a favorite writer or author that inspires you as a writer?
“Most definitely, Sue Grafton.  She is a great mystery writer but also injects so much humor. You feel as though you know her characters personally.”

4.) Since you have a great reader following of your mysteries, what can you tell your readers about yourself that they may not know about you?
“Oh my goodness, I think the most important thing for them to know about me is how humbled I am to have them read my work.  I never take for granted anyone’s time or the money they’ve spent purchasing a book.  There are so many wonderful writers out there and the fact that they choose to read my novels is quite astounding.

“A not-so-silent thief makes off with $226 billion, every year, robbing the economy, flooding hospitals, clogging courts. And landing million-dollar spots in the year’s biggest televised sports events.“It” is alcohol. Not terrorism. Not obesity. Not cancer or diabetes or Ebola or any other disease. It’s alcohol. We’ll spend more to combat these other scourges that cause less turmoil and financial damage while alcohol rules the roost, the clubhouse and the corner office.

The third-leading cause of preventable death and illness stays under the radar because of good advertising and bad stigma. Its purveyors are proclaimed as charitable kings. Those who use it and discover alcohol has health and social consequences, are labeled as villains, kill-joys, weak, weird, or morally off.

The stigma of alcohol use disorders, treatment and recovery keeps the discussion of what alcohol does to you behind the wishful-thinking-driven chatter about what it does for you. The tipping point has passed. The status quo: No longer sustainable or acceptable.

Adding Fire to the Fuel examines:
How families and communities feed public and self-stigma even while the stigma holds them back; How stigma has become a barrier to many who want help; How to hang on to sobriety in a pro-alcohol world; And how PANonymous alcoholics will reduce stigma more than all the protests combined.”

About The Book ~ Silver Lining

Nine out of ten people who quit drinking relapse at least once. “Every
Silver Lining Has a Cloud” shows why it’s not just once… without
pithy slogans or trademarked solutions. From the author of “What
the Early Worm Gets,” a startling book defining Alcoholism, here’s a
book explaining how and why relapse happens, how to hold it at bay
and why every American should care. Sobriety is a state of illness and
its symptoms, left untreated, lead directly to lapse. Addressing the
Symptoms of Sobriety is essential.
.
Why would any sober Alcoholic return to the misery?
What are the Symptoms of Sobriety and how do Alcoholics and non-Alcoholics guard against them?
What four overlooked stressors trip up recovery?
Can you hit bottom sober?
The narrative dashes along peaks of anger, joy, desperation, relief and
hope interspersed with solid data on the disease and guidance for
avoiding relapse traps.
It’s not enough to just stop drinking. . .

Now that I have shared just about all you need to know about this fantastic writer and author?
Here are a few Amazon Book Reviews of how much readers have enjoyed about Scott’s books.

Amazon Reader Reviews:

Scott Steven’s extremely readable “Every Silver Lining Has A Cloud” is SUCH an important work! Powerful, clearly written, enormously informative, this book taught me not only about the emotional rollercoaster an alcoholic takes, but also about the chemical science of alcoholism, which basically stacks the genetic biochemical deck against him or her.

Scott also goes into Al-Anon, the legal system, and the futility of incarceration programs as well as how dysfunctional families play such a large role in alcoholism. Peppered throughout the book are well-versed truisms and great chapter opening quotes, which I personally thought added an extra punch to it all. And lest you think this book is like so many other self-help books, filled with one unprovable case study after another, here, every eye-opening statement or life example is backed up by worthy sources. A true find for everyone!
HIGHLY recommended!

Another Amazon Reader:

“Scott Stevens has again written another very powerful and necessary book. The stigma attached with being alcoholic or recovering alcoholic is overwhelming and Scott explains and goes far to share what needs to be done to erase that stigma.

Scott’s statistics, research, and facts in Adding Fuel are awesome and very useful … especially for people like me who work with people and families who are dealing with alcoholism. There is no room for blame or shame and certainly no labeling when it comes to people who are in recovery. I have never seen those things work for anyone. Many people do want to get sober or clean but, the fear of being “found out,” keeps them from taking the first step into recovery. I truly wish I could get this book into the hands of every teacher, doctor, rehab in the world. It is an eye-opener and it left me feeling hopeful. Thank you again for writing this Scott.”
Highly Suggest This Book!

“Lyon Book Promotions Review Spotlight For “Anything For Amelia,” By: Author Andrew Branham.”

Hello and Welcome Readers,

anything2

Well, I just finished Author, Andrew C. Branham’s new book, a memoir of his experience of adopting his daughter sweet Amelia. Andrew and partner DJ, explain the “HELL they went through, and what a ride these dads have been on. Reading Andrew’s book really opened my eyes to how our adoption process and system is so broken. Even the legal process a couple has to go through when they decide to start a family through adoption is also very broken.

And even though Andrew and DJ are two gay partners who had the desire to start a family together? By no means is this book just about gay couples wanting to adopt. It is about ALL couples who have to go through the same system they did to adopt. Yes, his book gives you an in-depth look for the LGBT community who are thinking of doing the same? But all couples go through a similar process. And Andrew had many obstacles to get over while this process played for them. I also want readers to know that Andrew and his partner are strong advocates of adoption and continue to help other families in the adoption process. 20% of his profits will be donated to the U.S. foster care system.

Here is a little about the book/memoir titled; Anything For Amelia: A true story of the challenges endured by two gay men who had the desire to adopt a child.

About The Memoir:
A true story of the challenges endured by two gay men who had the desire to adopt a child.

When Andrew and DJ decided to adopt and bring a child into their lives, little did they know what they were about to endure; yet never did the thought cross their minds to give up. The horrific, pitilessly, and beyond comprehensible hoops one woman would make them jump through demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that little Amelia was going to be much better off in the loving home that Drew and DJ could provide her. Just when you think, how can two people survive such a nightmare and the journey is just about over when little Amelia is born and will be safely in the arms of her loving dads, Sandi decides to pull one more shenanigan that could change their lives forever.

More than 10 million adults have been adopted or fostered in their childhood. Along with spiraling increases in adoptions comes a growing need to disclose the significant flaws in adoption laws that open the doors to fraud, manipulation, and abuse of the system. AMELIA is the first book to explore this dark side of the adoption process through the true story of one couple’s journey through hell. Called “the most difficult adoption in U.S history, by adoption experts, the book appeals to nearly all families (traditional and non-traditional) interested in adoption, foster parenting, or surrogacy
.
An amazing book filled with tips, advice, and eye-opening first-hand accounts, this is one feel-good story that serves an important purpose and fills a critical gap in adoption literature. – D. J. Herda

Andrew C. Branham
( DJ holding Amelia, and Andrew Branham, Author)

My Book Review of ‘Anything For Amelia.”
First I want to let readers know this book/memoir hit Amazon’s #1 Best Seller list for LGBT Memoir/Biography reads, and currently has 100% 5 Star Amazon Book Reviews. .. ..

An Amazing True Story Of Adoption and A New Beautiful Family.

on September 28, 2015
What more can I add to many other fantastic reviews of Andrew Branham’s new book titled, ‘Anything for Amelia’ that has not been written already. Very well written account of a truly heartwarming, and at times heartbreaking experience both Andrew and DJ had to face until the sweet victory of having a family they desperately wanted with Amelia as their daughter. I also came away from this book realizing that our adoption system is badly broken in this country. No parents should have to battle like Andrew had to start a family through the adoption system. Way to many open loop holes in our flawed system.

I want to echo what another reader mentioned in their review, that his book is not just about two gay men wanting a child, nor about the LGBT community. This is real lives, going through real pain when they came to many heart breaking road blocks in their process of adopting Amelia.

I feel more legal rights need to lean for the couples adopting than most all for the birth mother. Yes, much is and can be done through the legal process, but not through a broken system. and this book is proof how corrupt our system is, and seems to lean way more toward the birth mother, and not the family adopting. Very unfair balance.

As a book reviewer point of view, Andrew did an exceptional job with writing such an in-depth personal journey that will help many parents adopting now after Andrew and DJ, to use his book as a guide of what to expect when adopting a child. What a legacy to leave behind for his family and for all who read his book. My heart goes out to them of the heartaches they had to go through, but in the end? Just take one look at Sweet Amelia, and I’m sure she makes it all worth IT! . . . .

Excellent & Highly Suggested Read!  ~ ~ Author, Catherine Townsend-Lyon

A Few more Readers Reviews on Amazon:

Amazing story of Love
This book is a heart wrenching depiction of a difficult adoption story. Although the difficult process was detailed….heartbreaking to say the least. But the beautiful theme that cannot be overshadowed is Love….fight for love no matter how difficult the battle! Amazing story thank you for sharing it with the world. Highly Suggested Read!
–  –  –  –  –

Great read! The emotional roller coaster of the open …

Great read! The emotional roller coaster of the open adoption from hell! Even knowing how the story ended, I couldn’t put the book down as I had to see what Sandi would come up with next. She is a character so evil that she couldn’t be made up; what she put Drew and DJ through for the duration of her pregnancy is truly evil! There is something wrong with the adoption laws if people like this can hold prospective parents hostage. I don’t know the answer but this shows that it is a question worth asking. Amazing that one woman could impact so many in such a negative manner. I only hope that CPS did their job; there are so many sympathetic characters in this story that you’ll find yourself rooting for all of them!
–  –  –  –  –

“Thoughts from an Attorney:”

“The best adoption memoir currently on the market. Why is it the best? Because it is 100% transparent and honest. No other book will give you such a candid look at the darker side of adoption. This is a must read for all adoptive or soon to be adoptive families.”   – Anonymous Adoption Attorney

So I think you the picture that this is a great book by the reviews its receiving. Andrew’s book is also now available in paperback on Amazon, and now available on Barnes & Noble as well. Great Indie Authors, Presents, … Author, Vinnie Sorce

Me headshot

of Chino Valley, Arizona

A Short Bio

Vinnie Sorce is an award-winning* author debuting his first book, Jersey Justice.

He’s been a writer for over ten years, selling articles and short stories along with blogging.

He grew up in North Jersey and currently lives in Arizona with one remaining child that hasn’t escaped yet. He likes to read, watch too much TV, wear his heart on his sleeve, and over examine situations that haven’t occurred yet.

Oh, and he eventually wants to save the world. No super powers are making that a difficult job, though.

*Now, when I say award-winning, I mean an award I made up and gave to myself. It was a beautiful ceremony. I cried.
.

Kev: What is your latest book about?

JerseyJustice.

It’s about a bullied youth who grows up to help people who can’t help themselves. His life is complicated by his off the wall sister, and his best childhood friend, Marci, who is slowly becoming his lover.

Kev: Who or what influenced you to write it?

Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie plum series was my influence. I grew up in North Jersey and loved the idea of having it set in such a familiar place.

Kev: Did you do any specialised research for your story?

Nope. Since the location was so familiar that was easy, and it’s fiction, so I improvised everything else!

Kev: What challenges did you face while writing the story?

The absolute biggest challenge was finding the time to write. A full-time job, and three kids make that difficult.

Kev:  Who is the protagonist?

Jimmy Vincent is my main man. I came up with his name and the title, Jersey Justice, first.

Kev: What would you say is the protagonist’s greatest weakness or obstacle and why?

His biggest weakness is his want to save the world and knowing he can’t do that.

Kev: What would you say is the main antagonist’s greatest strength?

He doesn’t realize it, but his greatest strengths are the people (characters) around him.

Kev: Could you provide a short passage from your book to give us a taster?

JerseyJustice“What the hell did you do?” he asked in dismay, hand to his head and covered in blood.

“I fought back,” was all I said calmly with a smile as I walked away, tucking the pistol into my jacket pocket. From now on, it would always be with me. This was a message to the scum of the world. From now on, it would be different.

Kev: Do you use some kind of formula when you write?

Not even a little bit. I just sit and write and it comes tumbling out. . . .

Kev: Preference for writing: Day or Night?

Not so much a preference as necessity. I write at night after work and after dinner.

Kev: What is your editing process?

When I have no juice left I start rereading what I already have and go from there.

Kev: Who creates your book covers?

I have a marketing friend who created this cover.

Kev: How do you promote your work?

Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn I also just hired a promoter who is getting me and the book out there.

Kev: What advice would you offer to new authors?

Don’t give up is the biggest advice I could give. Just keep writing and submitting, or go ahead and self-publish.

Kev: Which two social media platforms do you use the most and why?(Include links)

Twitter and Facebook are the two I use the most. I guess because I understand them, and am the most familiar with them.

https://twitter.com/vinniesorce

https://www.facebook.com/Vinnie.sorce.author

Kev: Do you have a website?

https://vinster82.wordpress.com/628-2/

Kev: Is there anything else you would like to add?

I am currently 80 pages into the sequel, Jersey Jezebel. Look for it soon!

Vinnie sorce, everyone!

A Special Author Update About Shaaren Pine & Scott Magnuson ~ They Were Shared In The Washington Post!

Hello Readers and Welcome New Friends,

One of my fun things to do here for my clients, is share their journey of all the wonderful things that come along with being an author with a new book release. And promoting ones books can take long hours, but when exciting opportunities come along, like being interviewed and written about in a major newspaper, then it makes the promoting hours worth while. I feel it also gives readers a more in-depth view of an author and their book.

And that is exactly what has come along for authors, Scott Magnuson and Shaaren Pine. So for all of us who don’t read The Washington Post, or subscribe, I want all of you to have an opportunity to learn more about Scott and Shaaren, and more about their amazing Memoir.

HAPPY READING Friends!

When you’re an addict but serving alcohol is in your job description.

When Scott Magnuson sat down to dinner at his H Street pub, the Argonaut, with his wife, Shaaren, and their daughter, Ara, one summer night in 2011, a casual observer of the little family scene would hardly have guessed that his marriage was imploding.

Shaaren could no longer handle Scott’s excessive drinking and drug use. He had broken so many promises and she had grown so wary of him that she kept him in her sight as he slipped behind the bar to order their food. When she saw him pour himself a beer, she took Ara and quickly left the restaurant.

With his wife gone, Scott went on drinking for hours with the bar employees. As Shaaren waited up for him at home, panicking, her husband was, she says, “snorting Adderall and walking the streets of D.C.,” wasted.

But when he finally dragged himself into their house on Linden Place at 5 a.m. the next day, Scott says, he was done. “I was tired,” he says. “For the first time, I saw the pain I had created.”

Scott had abused substances for more than half his life, since he began sneaking beers at age 14 from the fridge at his first restaurant job. From the moment he started drinking, he recalls, “I drank and drank until I couldn’t drink anymore.”

That night in 2011, he decided that he couldn’t drink anymore.

“If you don’t want to slip, don’t go to slippery places” — it’s an adage often repeated in the 12-step world. For Scott, for years, no place was as perilous as the Argonaut itself.

“Working in a restaurant didn’t cause me to use drugs and start drinking,” says Scott, 36. “But being in that environment — it’s like fuel to a fire.”

He and Shaaren, 39, are sitting in a quiet spot at the Argonaut, openly discussing Scott’s addiction and its corrosive effects, which they describe in their recent joint memoir, “Torn Together.” They hope that the book and their 18-month-old support group for workers in their industry will help open a dialogue about pervasive substance abuse in the bar business.

There’s plenty to talk about. The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is due to issue new data on drug and alcohol use by restaurant workers this month. But in its last survey, released in 2007, 12 percent of full-time restaurant and hospitality workers reported heavy alcohol use, and 17 percent reported having used illicit drugs. Among various occupations, restaurant and bar workers ranked No. 1 for drug use and fourth for alcohol abuse.

Working in a bar is a career that comes with pressure to be sociable, to take the shots that bar-goers will buy you, says Chandler Christian, who has worked in the industry for years in various roles and has been at the Argonaut for the past four. “Traditionally,” he says, “the bartender is the guy who will drink you under the table.” Now, imagine if that bartender is prone to addiction.

“If you had an office job, you’d have been fired long ago because you didn’t come to work, or you came to work under the influence,” Shaaren adds. “But those things don’t happen in this industry. You can keep your job.”

Now that he’s sober, Scott is determined to keep his.

Scott Magnuson met Shaaren Pine in 2005 at the Argonaut, a nautical-themed pub that was one of the first to plant a flag on H Street NE. Shaaren was 30 and drawn to the goateed 26-year-old behind the bar. He was wild, impetuous and almost instantly devoted to her.

Before long, Shaaren was working at the Argonaut, too, picking up shifts to earn cash while in grad school and be closer to Scott. There was hardly a night when the couple weren’t at the bar, cooking, running food, pouring beers, and then hanging out drinking in the hours after last call, stumbling home and sleeping late.

They were married in 2007; Ara was born within a year. By then, Shaaren was aware that what had been a phase for her was a problem for Scott. She would wrest promise after promise from him — that he would stop drinking, stop smoking and settle down. He would swear that he would, but then she’d find pill bottles in his laundry, which he would explain away, and later, alcohol hidden around the house.

When a fire in 2010 shuttered much of the Argonaut for months, Shaaren re-wrote the bar’s employee manual to insist on a drug-free workplace — and no drinking on the job.

It was a change, she acknowledges now, that was probably aimed solely at Scott, but it seemed to apply to everyone but him. He was secretly taking painkillers and making frequent trips to the bar basement to sneak swigs of vodka.
How could Shaaren not have known that her husband was an addict? “I had nothing clean to compare him to,” she says. She has never used drugs herself, but she eventually learned that Scott had abused them the whole time they’d been together.

Also unaware of Scott’s addiction was his partner, Joe Englert, who owns stakes in 10 D.C. bars and restaurants, including 75 percent of the Argonaut.

When Shaaren called him to tell him about the extent of Scott’s drinking and drugging, Englert recalls, “I felt defeated and sad for the both of them because of how much time they had put into [the Argonaut], and that it was partly responsible for his troubles.”

But the business side was complicated. The Argonaut needed Scott, who, though a minority owner, runs the day-to-day operations. “You don’t want to scare away a good person like Scott by being overly paranoid or overly on top of him while you’re building a business,” Englert says.

By the time Shaaren called him, however, Scott had already left for rehab. After hitting bottom that summer night in 2011, he finally checked into a 21-day program in Florida

When he emerged and began outpatient treatment, he and Shaaren started Restaurant Recovery, a nonprofit organization that they hope will someday help underinsured bar and restaurant workers afford treatment. For now, they hold Restaurant Recovery meetings at the Argonaut on Monday afternoons, hours before nightlife workers usually clock in. Five or six people will usually show up to talk about their struggles at the meetings, which Scott leads. Upstairs, Shaaren will make time for the addicts’ loved ones if they want to talk.

“We’re not sure Restaurant Recovery will get anybody sober,” Shaaren says, but it’s important, adds Scott, for “people to see somebody that’s happy.”

On a recent gorgeous Saturday afternoon, the brunch crowd has descended on the Argonaut. Eggs and wings fly out of the kitchen, and the bottomless mimosa’s flow.

While Scott runs glasses and hauls ice, Shaaren welcomes customers at the host stand. The two are aware of the irony of serving unlimited alcohol, but business is business.

When he first left rehab, it was hard for Scott to be around the pub. At first, he recalls, “you look at everybody else that’s drinking and having a good time, and you’re like, ‘Why can’t I just drink and have a good time? What’s wrong with me?’ ” Now, he’s not as bothered.

“He’s much calmer and much more at ease,” Englert says. “He knows who he is.” Scott has added a new tattoo to his heavily inked arms: a phoenix wrapped in flames, a mythological bird symbolizing rebirth and renewal.

There are other signs of his new life, too. He works out almost every day and has become a devotee of meditation. And for the most part, he no longer works the bar floor, preferring the zen of the office on the Argonaut’s second floor. Hanging on the avocado-green walls are the certificates marking his successful completion of drug and alcohol treatment.

Scott and Shaaren have bought a second home, a cute rambler in South Bristol, Maine, where Shaaren has spent many summers since her childhood. They also purchased a little general store and cafe there, on the waterfront. Whenever Ara, now 7, has a break from school, that’s where they are.

Asked what advice she could offer to others, Shaaren pauses for a long time. “There are no right answers. You have to do what’s right for you, because the statistics are so grim,” she finally says. “I can’t say stick it out, because what happened with Scott has been kind of miraculous.”

Scott has slipped a couple of times, including last summer, when, he says, he wasn’t working out or meditating and drank to the point that he was sick. The relapses lasted no more than a day, and each has been a learning experience. Sobriety, he knows, is a tightrope he’ll have to walk every day.

To get here, Scott says, “I had to change my focus from ‘Woo-hoo, bar! Party time!’ to ‘It’s a profession,’ you know? It’s my job.”
