New Book Review Share For “Addicted To Dimes,” My Memoir!

Hello Readers and Friends,

It’s been awhile since I have shared a ‘Wee Little Bit’ about my book titled: Addicted To Dimes, Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat, available in both paperback and e-book on Amazon. And, my book was recently read and reviewed by two new exciting readers. The most current is a fantastic author herself from the UK and was very honored she read and reviewed my book. She then did an in-depth fair and honest book review on her Book & Author Blog! Author, T.R. Robinson, thank you! You got it! You understood all the points I was trying to get out through my memoir, and you did pinpoint the area’s my writing needs to improve. I have no problem with corrective advice as it helps me be a better writer!

The second was placed here Amazon Top Book Reviewer and I was both honored and surprised that an Amazon Top 100 book reviewer took the time to read my book and do a nice fair book review. He is a writer and journalist for, Vine Voice and a Hall Of Fame Amazon Reviewer.

The next I am sharing is from a new book site I came across and used my book as a test run for a low-cost Professional Book Review to see how well they do before I refer clients over on Online Book Club .org Book Review. I hope you enjoy reading more of what readers and book reviewers are saying about my Memoir and Sharing HOPE to others from addiction through my book….  Author, Catherine Lyon  :-)

Addicted to Dimes (Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat) by Catherine Townsend-Lyon – Book Review

A very personal, honest, no holds barred memoir. This is the tale of the author’s journey with gambling addiction. Catherine Townsend-Lyon has been very honest about all her failings. Though she admits writing the book had a cleansing and cathartic effect on her, it must have been very hard to recall and put into the public view all that occurred on her journey. She has to be admired and respected for having taken this step.

The author has endured much but at the same time, I think it only right to remind readers she is anything but alone in this. Many of us, one way or another, have suffered in our lives, some similar to her own experiences, others very different. We are each unique and individual and though there may be similarities each of our journeys differ.

Though one of her motivations for writing this book is to help others who suffer the same addiction it should be born in mind this is her own tale, dark at times. No doubt others have and do experience similar circumstances but this is not a handbook for them.  Nevertheless, having said that, it should help many to appreciate they are not alone; that others have and are going through similar difficulties; that there is hope; that there is escape if they truly work toward it.

Throughout, ‘triggers’ are described and talked about but we must bear in mind these are also personal to her. For others, the ‘triggers’ may be very different.  Catherine (if I may be so personal as to refer to her by first name) frequently explains how, through her dysfunctional family, she consistently felt valueless. But also, and very sadly, briefly describes; how she was abused by someone outside the family; how she was unable to tell anyone about it; how this also acted as a ‘trigger’ and how the combined resulting mindset and emotions have continued to plague her throughout life.

Drawbacks:

Before mentioning these it is only fair to acknowledge the author has made clear she is not a writer but has simply decided to share her own story.  It is very much told in her own words and expressions which have the benefit of really making this a personal work.

Nevertheless:

  • I consider the book a tad  long. Much of what has been shared could be condensed and consequently, would make it a more readily readable book.  For many time is an issue and it would be a shame if readers gave up because of the length.
  • Until approximately the eighty percent mark (I read this on a Kindle and therefore am referring to percentages rather than page numbers) I did not feel drawn into the story.  Of course, this may be personal to me but up to this point, I felt I was simply being presented with information and facts.  I was able to sympathize but that was all. However, after this point there were areas where I felt empathy for the author; could feel her emotions, concerns, sorrow and disappointment.
  • Most addiction recovery programs have a twelve step process.  The author frequently refers to these but never really explains what is involved.  Of course, I appreciate this is not intended to be a formal guide but it would have been nice to have a little more understating of what these steps involve; many readers will not be suffering from the addiction but will be reading out of genuine and general interest.

Rating: As any regular or frequent readers of this blog and my reviews will know, I consider the majority of books fall within the three-star rating.  Regrettably, to my mind at least, the rating system has been undermined, sad to say mostly by self-published authors, by the constant allocation of higher ratings than often merited.  But at the same time, I acknowledge reading is a subjective experience. Consequently, what one may enjoy another may dislike and each has the right to reflect this.

Nonetheless, I do consider far too many four and five stars have been given.  Now, with respect to this book, I have found it difficult to determine a final rating.  The author has willingly shared everything, exposing all her faults and failures honestly.  She has taken us on the difficult journey of her life without drawing back from the realities, prepared to endure the opinions and attitudes that may result. For this reason, and despite the reservations referred to above, I consider the book merits a higher rating than three stars.  Existing rating systems, well at least those that are primarily used by readers, do not allow for percentages. Consequently, I feel there is no option but for me to allocate a 4 Stars (****).

Reviewer sidenote:
Catherine Townsend-Lyon contacted me about a year ago asking if I would consider a review exchange of books. I agreed and we exchanged free copies. I did explain it would take a while for me to read and review; there are many demands upon my time.

Nevertheless, a year is excessive. Unexpectedly some family issues arose, including health, that required my absence from my usual routine. At first, I tried to keep up but in the end had to abandon my on-line and reading activity. In the end, I was absent for eight to nine months. Of course, I then had the mammoth catching up process to go through.  However, I firmly believe we should always fulfill our undertakings, even, as in this case, where deadlines have to be postponed. All I may do is apologize to her for the long delay but in my defense point out it has been due to circumstances outside of my control.

A 3 out of 4 Stars…

Review by G A Porter … April 11th, 2016

Addicted To Dimes, Confessions of a Liar and a Cheat by Catherine Townsend-Lyon
is a Memoir about the author’s personal battle with gambling addiction. The book explores the author’s past experiences and decisions which eventually culminated in a financially and emotionally devastating addiction and the difficult ordeal of the recovery process. The author is open and honest about her past mistakes, her family drama, family dysfunctional dynamic, past abuse, and the long-term consequences gambling has had on her marriage and friendships.

The first section of the book is an introduction to the author’s early life. She grew up in a dysfunctional family and suffered abuse at the hands of her parents as well as outsiders. As a teenager and young woman, the author felt stifled by her mother’s overbearing control, particularly in controlling her own hard-earned money. She outlines decisions she made and relationships she began while searching for a replacement “unconditional love” that she did not receive from her parents. The hardships of her early life may have made the author vulnerable to the lure of addiction, and the continuing dysfunction may have added fuel to the fire later in her life.

The author gives the description of her family dysfunction and past to illustrate the person she used to be before the addiction took over her life. The addiction began slowly, but over time grew and drove her to drastic actions. As stress piled on her, gambling became an outlet and escape to her emotions. She also adopted the gambler’s mentality of placing bets to win money she desperately needed to pay bills, but in the end, would lose more money than she came in with and chased her loss’s. Over the years, and giving insights, not excuses, the author would borrow money, steal from friends and workplaces, and jeopardize everything she and her husband worked for to maintain her gambling habit before fully committing to the recovery process.

Townsend-Lyon was inspired to write this book after hearing the news of a local woman’s suicide due to gambling addiction. She wrote this book to give hope to those caught in the addiction that recovery is possible as well as to inspire empathy and bring awareness to others. The recovery process took a long time for the author and she described the “rock bottom” situation that appears to have been necessary for her to fully commit to the recovery process. She describes her own missteps, triggers from family and stress, and aspects of therapy which were most and least helpful for her. In the end, she appears to have been successful, if still in financial hardship at that time.

Readers Favorite Book Review For ~ Failing at Fatherhood ~ Author, Jack Barr

Review Rating:
4 stars.
Reviewed By Samantha Gregory for Readers’ Favorite

Failing at Fatherhood: A Book for the Imperfect Father by Jack Barr is the story of the birth of Jack’s daughter, Marley, and her diagnosis of Down’s Syndrome. Jack shares his feelings about the diagnosis and how it affected him in the early part of his daughter’s life. He becomes angry at his wife, Marley, and God over the diagnosis, but instead of talking to anyone about it, he bottles it all up. As the book goes on, Jack begins to accept his daughter’s diagnosis.

Jack Barr has written about a difficult event in Failing at Fatherhood, but in the early chapters you don’t really have any sympathy for him. His reaction is completely selfish – he is only worried about himself and how everything is affecting him. He has already written off his daughter before she has a chance to prove him wrong. Children with Down’s Syndrome can live very full lives. Gradually, Jack learns to accept it and comes to terms with it. He tells us about his own childhood and the experiences he had with his own father and how they shaped him.

There is a strong Christian influence in the book and Jack works in Thailand teaching people about God. Many parents of Down’s Syndrome children will tell you that, while it can be difficult at times, they wouldn’t change their child for anything. Having Down’s Syndrome does not define a child, it is just a part of them. I think the book is interesting, and a must read for parents of children born with a disability. . .

Jack, Jana and Marley Barr

Jack and Jana Barr are missionaries in Bangkok, Thailand.  Before their first date, they both knew God was calling them to serve overseas.  After completing their undergraduate degrees at Johnson University, and their graduate degrees (Jack M.Ed. Regent University, M.Sc. Canisius College/ Jana M.A. Lee University) they flew to Bangkok for the first time.  For the past nine years they have served God by teaching at the International Community School in Bangkok, Thailand.

Three years ago, Jack and Jana did not know God would use their daughter Marley, to forever alter their life plan.  Marley was born with Down syndrome and that event sent Jack crashing into a sea of depression. “I could not overcome the question of, Why us God”?  Since that day, Jack and Jana have rerouted their plan to align with God’s plan.  They started, If They Had A Voice, an awareness campaign that focuses on Down syndrome abortions.  Their story has been featured on CNN, CNN Mexico, Life Action News, and The Insight Channel.  Jack also wrote his first book, Failing at Fatherhood, which has been endorsed by Bob Russell, S.A. Bodeen, and Woodroll Kroll.  Jack & Jana had a simple plan for their future, but God has forced them to trust in HIS plan.

I Welcome Philanthropist Author, George B Streetor and His Book: The Akan House of Mystery.

Hello Friends, Readers, and New Visitors,

The Akan House of Mystery: The History and Accomplishments of the Akan People

I’m happy and so pleased to share my good friend and fellow Author, George B Streetor, and his fantastic book titled;
The Akan House Of Mystery: The History and Accomplishments of the Akan People.
Now available on Barnes and Noble Books, and Amazon Books online.

I call George a Philanthropist because in his own words, “The profits from the sales of the book is to establish centers across Africa to heal children who are infected with the HIV virus and the imbecile through Homatherapy at no cost.
Please buy my book to support us care for the needy African child who are suffering from the above through no fault of theirs.” Now how generous that? I think this is a wonderful way to reach and heal lives of the African children who are suffering from this horrible disease of HIV virus. We can all have a call to action to reach far by just the purchase of a fantastic book.

And to prove that this is a worthwhile read? Here is a special Book Review recently media shared by” New London Writers ~ media/news/publishing.

NEW LONDON WRITERS. . .

The Akan House Of Mystery:

Don’t be fooled by the title. “The Akan House of Mystery” by George B. Streetor is not a mystery novel, but rather a detailed historical account of the Akan people, who are an important ethnic group of West Africa (mostly Ghana and the Ivory Coast) and comprise over twenty million people.

The Akan House of Mystery

The book is divided into three main parts and also has a preface that highlights the author’s dedication to homatherapy (the process of healing the atmosphere through the agency of fire in a copper pyramid tuned to the rhythm of the sunrise/sunset).

The Introduction serves as a primer to acquaint the reader with the Akan people and their language, culture, society, and traditions. Of particular interest is the fact that the Akan people follow matrilineal rules of ancestry and inheritance, and, therefore, women are highly regarded in Akan culture. Throughout history, they served as powerful rulers (queens), orators, and decision-makers. When a new king was to be chosen, it was the queen mother or the elder woman in the family who nominated a male royal for the kingship.

Part I of the book describes the various Akan tribes in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, and the strife and civil wars that ensued among them.

The story of Nana Abena Pokua (the first Asante warrior queen under the Asante confederacy) is also told in great detail and describes her courageous rebellion, tragic act of sacrifice, and emigration to the Ivory Coast, where she founded the Baoule Kingdom in 1720 and reigned for thirty years. To this day, she is revered for her courage, bravery and selflessness, and a statue in her honour stands in the centre of Abidjan, the economic capital of the Ivory Coast.

Other interesting stories told include that of the first president of the Ivory Coast (Houphouet Boigny), who secured independence for the country in 1960, and the history of the state of New Juaben in the eastern region of Ghana.

Part II of the book is an intriguing tale of family, betrayal, destiny, and mysticism. It revolves around the children of Yaa Akyaa (an Akan woman from Koforidua), particularly her daughter Yaa Daben who was conceived under strange circumstances. Yaa Daben’s story unfolds in typical Akan fashion with a traditional marriage, the birth of two children, and life according to Akan custom. The story then takes a spiritual turn when Yaa Daben’s son Marfo dies mysteriously while in the army. His death is considered suspicious and what unfolds is a tale of intrigue, ghosts, and witchcraft. The story leads into present day and describes some of the descendants of Yaa Akyaa (and Yaa Daben) who are still alive today.

“The Akan House of Mystery” is part history, part fable. It is a noble attempt to highlight the accomplishments of the Akan people through loosely interwoven stories of Akan historical events, significant persons, traditions, fables, and modern-day events. Some social commentary is also sprinkled throughout the book to bring awareness to modern-day issues in Africa.

All in all, the book is a fascinating read even though some of the stories and events are not always presented in chronological order or coherently linked together. However, the impeccable storytelling is spellbinding, especially in Part II of the book, which draws you in wanting more and more.

If you want to learn about the history and customs of the Akan people, then you definitely need to enter “The Akan House of Mystery”!

This book is available on Amazon, and Barnes & Noble books.

Bittersweet Enduring Love”  January 13, 2015  By elaine m. suda

“I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Even though I spent more time sobbing during my reading about Anna and Louis, I am still happy that their love endured. Anna still has her baby daughter to love and reminds her of the passion she shared with Louis. I look forward to reading more of your work.”

Five Stars”  January 9, 2015  By  Julia Kirk

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your book,  September 20, 2014  By Steve Layton (COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, US). . .
Rosie, my dear friend, I remember the day you shared your plans about writing a novel. You never lost your enthusiasm, and over the years I witnessed your dream grow, your passion take shape and the birth of “Echoes from the Oasis”.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your book, you have done a great job and I highly recommend this novel. You transport the reader to your island home, through vivid descriptions, and your depiction of characters is amazing. You have captured the Seychelles Creole culture and painted an amazing picture of life on the islands during colonial times, as your characters from all social background and different ethnicity interact with one another.
Bravo! I can’t wait for the sequel.

Congratulations, your work has its rightful place at the archives of The Seychelles National Library, along with the work of many of your fellow authors from the Seychelles.

NOW MY OWN REVIEW. . .
5 Stars! November 16, 2014 ~ Author, Catherine Townsend-Lyon

Rosie has done a fine job in promoting her new novel where she had been born and raised, which in opinion, is one of the most beautiful places on earth, The Seychelles Islands.

Not only has Rosie written a beautiful fiction romance, she also shares many of the traditions, ways, and cultures of this beautiful part of the world. And the about a young woman, Anna who blossoms when she finds love. Even one of Rosie’s written characters has my first name, Catherine. Now that made me feel special. But I’m pretty confident that was well planned in her book before we had ever met.

I also have to warn you about this read, when you start reading Rosie’s book, be prepared to have a few late nights as I did. One night I didn’t turn out my reading lamp until almost 2 am. Now that’s a great read! I was so drenched into this storyline, the well written historical sites tells me the author did some research. But then again, when your born and raised where your storyline takes place, it is the past historical background Rosie really shines. She has a wonderful writing style I enjoyed as well.
That’s why I gave this beautiful read a 5 Stars! It truly is worth your time to purchase and read . . .

About The Book:

The Akan House of Mystery: The History and Accomplishments of the Akan People

The Akan House of Mystery is a book that explains the nature of the Akan people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The Akan are a very determined people who will not be suppressed and will do what they must to achieve their goals.

Their reasons for matrilineal inheritance are noted, along with the ramifications. This in-depth book shows why there is the need for continuity of rebirth with women as the wheel of the revolving cycle, as well as the power given them, and the need to help them gain the respect due women not only in Akan lands but in all of Africa.

It tells how the warrior queen Abena Pokua, the first Asante queen under the Asante confederacy during the reign of Nana Osei Tutu 1 (1680-1717), rebelled and led her people to the present day Ivory Coast after the death of Nana in war.

History shows how the Baoule kingdom of Ivory Coast came about, and how Abena Pokua occupied a golden stool from the Comoe river in Ivory Coast, with the Asantehene occupying the golden stool commanded from the sky in Ghana.
The book’s mysteries delve into the concepts of death, ghosts, God, Satan, witchcraft, and wizards.

George B. Streetor was born in Koforidua, Ghana, where the main story takes place. He now lives in Accra, Ghana, and a therapist who heals without chemicals by using homa therapy.

This review is from: The Akan House of Mystery: The History and Accomplishments of the Akan People (Paperback) “I highly recommend this book”!

.
Now as an author myself, I feel we all have a story to tell within us. No matter where we come from nor what kind of life we have lived, I find it interesting that when others share their life, history, and heritage past or present, in time, our stories and books will be there for others to read about our generation. It too may become part of history when we are long gone from this earth. What ever journey or path we have walked or come from, either perfect or not, will become part of history in the future. It too will show our struggles of this era. Our society is so very different than the many generations before us. That’s what I find most interesting about George’s book.

His story he shares about his country, heritage, history, and his people will  be part of our future history. I feel we need more writers to share, write, and give an insightful looks at life through Biographies and Memoirs for just these reasons. Especially when the authors are from other parts of the world.  I’m happy George has done this as I have. I hope you will take a journey of words with him by reading his book. Here are a few places you can connect with this wonderful author, and where to purchase his book too!

Lyon Media Welcomes New Author, A.R. Tirant & Her New Book “Echoes from the Oasis”…

Hello and Welcome Readers & Friends,

Today I Welcome, A. R. Tirant, ‘Rosie’ to me and you, as she is a brand new UK Author! Her book is available in both the United Kingdom, United States, and a few other countries.

Rosie and I met through a few social media sites, and when she told me a little about her new book, I had to go take a peek on Amazon & Goodreads myself to investigate! What first took my breath away was her beautiful book cover! And the book blurb is fantastic too. And yes, I added her book to my Goodreads “Want To Read book” shelve. Here is a little about her new novel that will be part of a wonderful series …

http://www.amazon.com/Echoes-Oasis-R-Tirant/dp/099280860X

About Her Book:

In early 1900 on the island of Mahe in the Seychelles, women were confined to specific roles and expectations, and custom and traditions prevailed with reverence. But, 16-year-old Anna, being passionate, nature-loving and rebellious, wanted more out of life. She had different desires and bigger dreams…

The book tells the emotional and dramatic story of Anna’s younger years. Forbidden love brought joy and meaning to her life, but it was quickly followed by a dreadful smallpox epidemic that brought tragedy to Mahe’s Victoria hospital where Anna worked.  Would she survived the ordeal ? Louis agonised and prayed… fate did lend a hand, and after months of separations they were finally reunited. Surely all will now be fine for them ?

Meanwhile in the background, the threatening atmosphere of a dark and closely guarded secret – witchcraft practices – has the islanders of this close-knit Catholic community shivering in fear, but it is the arson, murder and rape rearing its ugly heads that were more frightening.

.
Rosie Tirant-Longhurst, aka A.R. Tirant, was born in the Seychelles in November 1958. The daughter of a policeman and, the eldest in a family of four brothers and four sisters. She grew up on the northern coast of Mahe island, in the tiny  seaside village of Beau-Vallon. Her working life started in 1975 as a nurse at Mahe’s Victoria Hospital, and followed there after by a long career in the Hotel Industry. She emigrated to England in 1995, and lives in West Sussex with her husband. She has two grown-up sons and a granddaughter.
.
Rosie wasn’t born with a pen in her hand, far from it. Life growing up was hard and strict. The home comforts we all now take for granted was but a dream for the young girl whose days was divided between household chores, cooking, cleaning and looking after her young siblings. Water for all the household use had to be carried from the stream, with one hand holding the pail on her head, whilst keeping the second pail in her other hand from spilling. Education only happened because it was the one way of getting some rest during the daytime, even if the chores still had to be done by the lights of the coconut oil lamp.
.
They were difficult times, times when she would lean against the pillar of the outdoor kitchen while waiting for dinner in those black pots to finally get ready, and stare at the tropical skies above, marvelling at the diamond beauty of the scattering of stars, and wishing for a different life …

“Echoes from the Oasis” is her debut novel which will be followed by other titles in the same series.

The story line is woven around a young, white Seychellois defying all odds for a different future!

“This book isn’t something I would ordinarily read (most of my collection falls within the fantasy/sci-fi genre) but occasionally I find a well written book outside of my normal sphere of reference which captures my interest; this was one such story. I was enchanted from start to finish.
The characters and their intricate back stories are complemented by vivid descriptions of the environment and culture which surrounds them – I am going to have to reread the book again soon (at a more leisurely pace) so I can better appreciate this aspect. In addition to the carefully crafted context, the narrative itself is cleverly paced and enticing.

I didn’t want to put the book down; I was reading whilst walking from the train station to the office (much to the annoyance of everyone around me)…… the only negative I can find is that I’m going to have to wait for the next one. Would definitely recommend”!*I want to say a big “Thank You” to my new friend and fellow Author, Rosie Tirant for letting me share her New Novel, and  a bit more about her with all my friends and readers here today, and all those who come by in the future.
