CAT’S Author Interview With Ray A. Price

Karaoke Cat Ginger Tabby Kitten Singing into Microphone' Photographic Print | AllPosters.com

Ray, tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Ray A Price, and I have always enjoyed writing, even as a child. I have written short stories, theatrical plays for stage, poetry, and legal documents. In my current career, I am a fraud investigator. My job is always different, and I enjoy it. Build with Bricks is my first book published. It was a dream of mine to become a published author, and in 2020 I finally fulfilled that dream.

What inspired you to write a children’s book?
My daughter was my biggest inspiration to write “Build with Bricks” and become a children’s book author. When she was in kindergarten, I would volunteer to be a parent guest reader for her classroom. I would buy a picture book and some cookies and share them in the classroom. After I did this, my daughter, Alivya, said, “Dad, I know you are a writer, so will you write a book for me?” So after that, I sat down and started work on Build with Bricks.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to snack on pastries when I write, lol. Pre Covid, I visited coffee shops, sat down with my laptop and a pastry, and wrote for hours. Now I’m writing at home, and I usually buy something from a local bakery.

What authors or books have influenced you?
Laura Numeroff, Marcus Pfister, Shel Silverstein, and Sam McBratney are just some authors I admire as some of the best in the business. Children’s books that stick and have a lasting effect are so influential; I think these authors have created stories like that.

What are you working on now?
I have a series of books coming next, the first one releasing later this year. “My Brother is a Werewolf” is my next book, and I cannot wait to share this picture book with everyone. It is about a girl named Brie who accidentally turns her little brother into a Werewolf. She will do anything to fix him because cleaning up werewolf poop is as bad as you think it is.

What advice would you give for new authors?
My advice to new authors would be to find a good group. ‘Build with Bricks’ was a project that I worked on with several talented individuals. My editor Lynda Dietz was so crucial to helping me bring the story together in a cohesive fashion.

Mandy Huey, the illustrator, spent so much time breathing life into the characters and world. Her artwork is so unique and amazing that I was happy & proud to have worked with her. My wife Stormie and daughter Alivya helped with marketing the book and just being my support system. Building a team that can help cultivate you and your work is essential and should not be overlooked.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you, what books would you bring? The Grapes of Wrath, The Watchmen, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Lastly, where can readers connect with you on social media?

Let’s Learn How To be Facebook Friends and More By My Guest & Author ~ Art Crandon. New E-Book Release For Only .99 Cents…

And now for something completely different for all my Avid Readers

There are not many of us living our lives without Facebook – it has become part of our life, but is it a force for good? Certainly, it’s great for keeping in touch with our friends.

But, nowadays who is a friend? You see someone you have something in common with, maybe your job, or a sport or pastime, you send them a friend request – they accept – and then you never hear from them again. What’s the point of that? You may occasionally see a post by them, or they may see one of yours, but apart from that there is no relationship at all.

I made a decision a few months ago that I was not happy with that. I want interaction with my friends. I want to know what they’re doing – and let them know what I am doing.

I am on a mission – to become a FRIEND to my Facebook friends. I’m gradually going through my list messaging them all, telling them what I’m doing, asking what they are doing, and if I can help them in any way.

The results are interesting, and I certainly know more about my ‘friends’ than I did before.

I wrote a short piece just to explain what I am doing – and I put some funnies in there, just to keep your interest. It’s only a short read – check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Facebook-know-your-friends-ebook/dp/B08XWHR337/

ABOUT KIM CARTER

Kim Carter is an author of suspense, mystery and thriller novels. She was a finalist in the 2018 Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award and recipient of the 2017 Readers’ Choice Award for her book Murder Among The Tombstones. This is the first book in her Clara and Iris Mystery series. The characters in this series are a couple of overly curious widows who become private investigators and were inspired by Kim’s mother and her mom’s best friend.

Her other titles include: When Dawn Never Comes, Deadly Odds, No Second Chances, And The Forecast Called For Rain, and Sweet Dreams, Baby Belle.

Kim’s writing career started after she suffered an illness that made her housebound for a couple of years. An avid reader of mystery novels, she embarked on writing as a means of filling her time. Kim shared those early writings with friends and family who encouraged her to pursue writing professionally. Her health struggles and successes have been chronicled on The Lifetime Television in early 2000, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Women’s Day Magazine, and Guideposts.

Prior to her illness, Kim worked in many different capacities in county government ranging from Park Director with Parks and Recreation to the Grant Department with Human Services. But, ultimately, it was her job as a correctional officer that provided her the opportunity to interact with a variety of people from all walks of life. Her experiences ran the gamete of inspiring success stories to tragic endings, much like her mysteries.

She self-published her first book No Second Chances. One of the guest speakers at the launch party she had at the Performing Arts Center in Newnan, Georgia included her close friend retired Atlanta Police chief Eldrin Bell. This connection would become helpful as she started doing more research for other books, this time working with a small publishing house.

Kim started networking and made connections with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. Her research has taken her many places including morgues, death row and the occasional midnight visit to cemeteries.

She is a college graduate of Saint Leo University, has a Bachelor Degree of Arts in Sociology. Kim and her husband have three grown children and live just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

An Intimate Interview With Artist and Author, Peggy Hinaekian Courtesy of DIVA International Magazine …

Interview with Peggy Hinaekian, artist and author

Q: You are an internationally known artist. Could you tell us about how it all started?

My artistic career started very early in life, in Egypt where I was born and grew up. Having demonstrated above-the-norm abilities in drawing, I was encouraged by my father, who bought me the necessary tools to go ahead in my endeavors. I became an avid doodler and drew on any paper I could find – even in my text books. I took some art courses in my teens, but they were very unsatisfactory. The professor wanted to change my creations and interfered in my imaginary renderings. From then on, I was self-taught.

I immigrated to Montreal and started painting seriously and professionally. I had so much nostalgia for the relentless Egyptian sun that I would look at the snow falling outside the window and would paint sunny imaginary landscapes inhabited by people.

I gave my first solo exhibition in a gallery in Montreal. I also got an honorable mention for an abstract painting in a group show in Montreal. It was my first painting—vibrant colors. Abstract art was not known in Montreal in the late 1950s. I was surprised the organizers even accepted my submission. I had submitted a nude before, but it had been rejected because, I was told, it was not appropriate for child visitors. Yet, in Europe, nude statues are all over the public squares – different upbringing and cultural mentalities.

After a couple of group shows in New York, I settled down in Switzerland, where my artistic career took off in leaps and bounds. My first European solo exhibition was in Paris. I had excellent reviews in the newspapers. The Paris exhibition opened doors for me and encouraged me to apply to other galleries in Europe, mostly in Switzerland.

I took a course in etchings in Geneva and produced quite a collection of them, their theme being intertwined human figures. I contacted print edition galleries in London, Paris and Rome, and my etchings then got distributed to other galleries all over the world. They can still be found online, being sold at auction.

Through a lot of moving around, working at a United Nations organization in Geneva, and raising two children, I never stopped painting and exhibiting. Painting was my passion. I finally opened my own gallery in Geneva which I had to close when I moved to the U.S.—again. I have done about 100 solo shows worldwide, numerous international art fairs, and my paintings are in private nad public collections.

Q: Do you think one is born an artist, or does one become one? If the latter, what did this mean for you?

I think one is born an artist. I really don’t know how one becomes an artist if one does not have the talent. Maybe the talent is hidden and comes out later on in life. But, one can tell from children’s drawings who has talent. Perseverance and a love for art can also contribute to becoming an artist, but only technically. I don’t think imagination can be taught. To be a real artist, one needs imagination and going beyond the borders.

Q: You have a long and impressive career. Looking back, what has been the most rewarding thing you have done?

The most rewarding thing I have done is take printmaking classes in Geneva. It opened international doors for me. Also, participating in numerous international art fairs around the world made it possible to have international contacts.

Q: Inspiration is key for an artist. Where does yours come from?

My inspiration comes from my life travels. Living in Egypt surrounded by desert, then living in Florida, surrounded by the oceans, have contributed to my inspirations. Actually, one journalist dubbed my work “Blue Reveries and Red Desertscapes”. I was also inspired by the colors of the New Mexican landscape. I can look at the ocean and an image comes to my mind.

The same goes for looking at a desert landscape or the sky or the pavement. Inspiration is all around me. The colors in nature are fodder to my paintings. But I don’t COPY nature, I distort it and invent it. The people in my paintings are also all from my imagination.

Q: You live now in the US. Is there a difference in being an artist there in comparison with living in Switzerland?

Yes, there is a difference in being an artist in Switzerland and being one in the U.S. The difference is in the public. The public in Switzerland is more art-minded and receptive to art. This also refers to the whole of Europe. In the U.S. they still go for representational art. I am talking generally and not about the highly ranked galleries where people buy big names for investment. People in the U.S. want to understand what they are looking at.

They are not curious to discover art they don’t understand. They feel more confident in hanging something that makes sense to them. Again, I am talking in generalities. There are the art aficionados in the U.S., but one has to look for them. I have met a few. I love it when a viewer can see something in my paintings that I do not see.

Q: What are the key messages of your art?

I have one key message: help the public to see the world in new and innovative ways. Conceptually, I try to immerse the viewer in the perceptual experience of space, color and light. Therefore, my paintings actualize perception by carefully balancing these elements.

I have a fascination with creative imagery that is an area of space occupied by floating forms that may join or float independently. Finally, by using color and texture, I try to breathe movement into my “abstract landscapes” to guide the viewer into the paintings and making the person wander into a different reality.

Q: Finally, if one would like to buy your works, how should one go about this?

Anybody interested in buying my art should go to my website here: www.peggyhinaekian.artspan.com
either buy it through the site or they can contact by Email: http://www.hinaekian@hotmail.com

I also do commissions. People have often asked me to do a similar painting in a larger size or do a giclée painting of an existing one. A giclée painting is, of course, much less expensive than the original one.

Marketing Non-Negotiables

Essential Rules to Live By:

I wish someone told me there are certain non-negotiables to marketing, before I entered the world of marketing, so I wouldn’t have made a fool of myself. I entered my first marketing role quite a few years ago, and to that job, I brought with me a few misguided pre-conceived notions about marketing.

The most dangerous notion being, assuming I could simply advertise my products on social media from the start. No value offers. No personality. Nothing. I quickly learned that you have offer something, some value, bring your personality to the table in order to increase my engagement, but we’ll get to that later, trust me.

Luckily for you, I made mistakes, so you won’t have to. I’ve improved and honed my marketing skills over the past few years, and I was lucky enough to realise there are a few non-negotiables to marketing.

These are the golden rules to marketing, so pay attention, and make notes:

Content is King:

  • Burn those three words into your memory and repeat it like a mantra every-time you think of new marketing methods.
  • You can learn the intricate ins and outs of Facebook’s Ads Manager and throw a £1000 daily budget into your many split-audiences and split-campaign objectives, but if your content is poor, if you’re using a shoddy image or a video shot with a 2005 Sony Ericson, then your campaign will fall flat on its face. Thud, bang, lights out.
  • Remember to look at the content around you and I don’t mean scrolling on your Instagram feed for 5 minutes and then going back to your Netflix series. I mean, you need to make a proper report.
  • Analyse your competitors, what sort of content do they release, is it visual, is it professional photography or is it digital design? What sort of engagement do they receive? How many social media sites are they on? Which sites are they not on? What sort of value are they providing with their content? Are they missing any areas of value or lacking in detail? These are just a few questions to consider.
  • The final point is key, whatever your competitor is doing wrong is essentially a gap in the market. While you shouldn’t base your entire strategy around it from the get-go, you should pay close attention to it and see if you can fill that gap and provide your audience with the content and value they’re so desperately yearning for!

Provide Value before you Promote:

  • Have you ever spoken to someone in real life who spoke about themselves non-stop and never asked how you’re doing? That’s how a lot of authors look like on Twitter and Instagram. They promote, promote and promote without ever listening to their audience and providing the value that they’re so desperately seeking!
  • It’s simple, provide value to your audience. If you’re an author, you should have a pretty good idea of what sort of advice and help you’d like to be receiving. Writing tips, marketing tips or simply some writing related humour.
  • If you can’t provide advice or help, then just have a conversation and support other authors, be nice. It’s certainly better than aimless promotion.
  • We’re not saying promotion should never occur, it’s most certainly important, just remember to provide some value first, that’s how you draw your audiences attention.

Consistency

“I’m getting no traction; I can’t be bothered anymore” – probably some aspiring author after a few weeks on Twitter. Here’s the thing about marketing, it’s really fun to do, until it’s not. I’ve spoken to a lot of aspiring marketers who have asked me, ‘how do you stay motivated?’. The truth is, I don’t. Some days, I’ve woken up and realised I have to put more time and effort into a channel that has been underperforming for weeks but I just get on with it. I do the work.

I don’t care if my writing or content comes out looking like hot garbage on the first draft, I can always edit it later! Let me tell you, that’s when you really learn about yourself and how far you’re willing to go to achieve your success. Ask yourself are you willing to work even when you don’t want to? Even when you’d rather be watching your favourite Netflix series? Don’t be an excuse generator, be an excuse incinerator.

Consistent posting on your marketing channels such as your blog, Twitter, Instagram etc, is what separates you from a lot of authors. Let me tell you, when you combine consistency with high quality content, and you have a delicious recipe for success.

Don’t believe me? Go to a successful YouTuber’s channel such as ‘Jenna Moreci’, go to her videos and sort it from ‘oldest to newest’. You’ll notice three things:

  • You’ll see consistent posting; most successful YouTubers post on their channel 4 to 5 times per month.
  • With successful channels, you’ll notice, as time goes on, the quality of the content is slowly getting better, the author of the videos is slowly but surely understanding what works with their audience, and what doesn’t work. That only happens when you post consistently, make mistakes quickly and learn with speed of Usain Bolt, not literally of course.
  • You’ll notice the engagement suddenly shoot through the roof, that’s what happens when high engagement, excellent SEO rankings and word-of-mouth all combine.

Consistency is key, there’s no way around it. There’s no secret to staying motivated either, some days you’ll have to grit your teeth and get through it. It’s never as bad as you think it’s going to be.

That’s it. Those are the three staples of marketing. These really are non-negotiables; you cannot avoid the universal truth that’s been laid out for you in this blog post. These three rules alone won’t lead you to glory, but they will be the backbone and foundation of your success.
Who said it would be easy?
Nobody.
