Author Aunt Anne Fifield Stops By The Reading Den For a New Interview. Cat Chatted and Got The Scoop on Her Next Children’s Book. . .

Children’s Books by Anne Fifield

Well, Cat happened to chat by phone with our fabulous children’s author and writer, Mrs. Anne Fifield, and the bassets Piper and Finny not too long ago. Anne told me she is feverishly working on finishing the fifth book of her ‘Princess Caroline’s Adventures’ series.

That might mean the tots will have a new book to read for Christmas; we will have to see how that plays out. But without further ado, here is a more recent interview with Anne all about her doggie series for children, first seen on Deb Carney’s Book Goodies site! It’s where readers and authors meet!  ~Cat Lyon

Interview with Author – Anne Fifield

By Book Goodies – October 2021

Author Anne Fifield

About Anne Fifield:
Anne Fifield is the creative visionary and best-selling children’s author of “The Princess Caroline’s Adventures” book series. Written for ages 7 to 12 and the young at heart, she is delighting kids worldwide. Her books are unique as she weaves in the elements of her rescued doggies, specifically basset hounds, into each of her stories and book covers.

Her first titled ‘The Princess’ Hand’ was released in August 2019, book two titled ‘Trip to Lake Ahrooo’ released in September 2020, book three followed in November 2020 with ‘The Hunt for the Jeweled Swords,’ and book four newly released in August 2021 titled ‘The Missing Knight.’ All are available on Amazon Books, Amazon Kindle, & many fine online book sites.

Anne is the youngest of three siblings and was born and raised outside Oklahoma City, OK. She met and married the love of her life, Tom, and they have been married for 24+years. Their kids are the four-legged variety who had adopted them over the years.

Anne’s career was also her passion. She was an ‘American Sign Language Interpreter’ for over 25-years and taught ASL at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Since both were her passions, she says she felt like she never worked a day in her life.

In 2006, she became heavily involved in basset rescue, and co-founded another one in 2011.

Anne, now retired, decided to move on to her next passion, the love of writing. She and her husband have rescued and fostered basset hounds for 20-years, so as Anne shares, “It felt natural to write children’s books with bassets as the characters. Our hounds provide the comic antics and inspiration for all my books.

Thus, ‘Princess Caroline’s Adventures Series’ was born. All the characters in her books are named after actual rescue dogs. Their pictures are in the back of each book. A portion of her royalties are given to various rescues. So, read a great book, and help a dog in need at the same time.

Anne and her husband enjoy retired life and reside in the ‘Great State of Texas.’

A Couple of Cast Members In Anne’s Books
Meet Piper & Finny!

What inspires you to write?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Keep your eyes and ears open, and be aware of your surroundings. You never know what might spark an idea for a story.

One day at the grocery store, I heard these two ladies chatting. One said something outrageous. It was sarcastic and full of humor. I loved it. When I arrived home, I wrote that line down and created an entire story from that one quote. And, of course, that line was in the book!

Now, my bassets are my inspiration. They’ll do something hilarious and I’ll think, “I must use that in the next book.”

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I love mystery and suspense. I grew up reading Nancy Drew books and Agatha Christie. Now, I enjoy Patricia Cornwell and James Patterson.

Tell us about your writing process.
I’m definitely an outliner, plus my Type A personality keeps me focused and organized.

Once a story idea hits me, I’ll write a general outline in MS Word. I’ll list all the plot and story lines. I’m a visual learner. So, seeing it in black-and-white assists me to write it.

Once I see it on paper, I revise it to add the three acts. Then, I make sure the nine checkpoints for the basic story structure are there.

After I have the plot and story lines down. I work on character sketches. I continue developing the character arcs during the writing process. I make sure they have flaws to overcome. No one is perfect – not even a basset.

As I actually write the story, many times it takes me down a road I hadn’t thought of before. The same for my characters. Sometimes they take over and write their own stories.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Oh yes! I’ll say, “Caroline, what are you thinking? Why in the world are you doing that?” She’ll either answer me or stick her tongue out at me.

What advice would you give other writers?
Hone your craft. Take classes, webinars, and the like to learn and give you confidence. You’ll continue the educational process along the way.

Don’t be afraid to start writing, but realize writing is rewriting. Don’t be afraid of rewriting either. It’ll help to polish and smooth your prose. Even famous authors rewrite their stories numerous times before they’re ready to be published. Don’t be resistant or surprised by that.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
After conversing with my instructors and other authors, I decided to go the self-publishing route. Plus, the writing groups I’m with encouraged me to take that path, too.

I’m an Indie author. This means I have a professional team consisting of an editor, (she performs a developmental edit and later a line edit.) illustrator, formatter, and several beta readers and advanced readers. I’m thrilled I made that decision. I have total control over my books and the marketing of such.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Since it’s difficult for a new, unknown author to be picked-up by an agent or traditional publisher, I think the Indie publishing route will continue to grow.

What genres do you write?:
Middle grade children’s books, mystery and suspense.

What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print

An In-Depth Author Interview With Writer Barbara Daniels Dena, Yorkie Magical Zoe, and Their First Book “For the Soul”. . .

Meet Zoe The Bark to Writing Yorkie Princess!

This Cat thought she had seen it all from many of our fantastic authors we enjoy working with when it comes to writing. I can now admit I have learned that doggies can WRITE! As a writer, our newest author, Barb Daniels Dena, possesses a “Magical” weapon when she writes her short stories. Her name is Princess Zoe.

Zoe not only helps Barbara write her books, but she is a publisher too! With Ms. Dena’s new release titled “For the Soul,” about livin’ life with raising children, quilts, doggies, and even some of grandma’s buttons, Zoe barks a few sentences here and there to remind the author to add a distant memory or two she may have missed.

Barb and Zoe’s collection of short stories delight readers worldwide and receive rave reviews and a few barks of the “tall tails” in her first published works. Cat caught up with both of them, and here is a little of what they wanted to share with Cat’s Readers.

Cat hopes you enjoy reading their interview first seen on Book Goodies Site. ✨📘📚🖊✏🐕🐾

“For the Soul: A Delightful Collection of Shorts”

CATS New Interview With Best-Selling Authors Barbara and Princess Yorkie Zoe!

About Author Barbara Daniels-Dena:
Barbara Daniels Dena is a new indie author with her eclectic book debut of “For the Soul: A Collection of Short Stories,” released in August 2021. Almost a memoir, this unique collection of inspiring stories of ‘good ole fashioned living,’ along with many of her past and present memories and life experiences that tugs on the heart, warming stories, and fictional tall tails delighting readers worldwide. The book is available now for purchase on Amazon Books, Amazon Kindle, and many fine online book sites.

Barbara began writing at an early age as a lover of “Make-Believe.” Today, her writing has developed from memories of family experiences, various compilations of events in her life, and her love of animals. She is willing to admit her vivid imagination plays a role in her stories.

The author is an Illinois native who has lived in many places; as Barb says, like a free-spirited “Gypsy,” she has lived and worked in Illinois, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, but Ultimately, she came home and settled back in the Quad Cities area.

Barbara is a proud mother of two grown children. She was a business owner of a Temp Agency, then transitioned into her passion for floral design, owned and ran several floral shops. Her favorite flower is the “Casablanca Lily.” Her favorite color is Red, and when she isn’t writing, Barbara spends her free time oil painting, enjoys quilting, knitting, and reading.

Her favorite book? “Death Be Not Proud” by John J. Gunther. Her first love is and always will be playing with her fur baby, a little Yorkie named Zoe. She continues to write from her cozy nook as she gazes over a pond full of geese and ducks. On many days it is more gazing than writing.

What inspires you to write?
The world around me. I watch people and animals. I am always on the lookout and continually ask myself, “what if?” and I go from there. I enjoy entertaining myself with the scenes I develop in my mind.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
My bookshelf is filled with my current favorite authors, and all are indie authors and are on Amazon.
My list is eclectic and varied and covers many genres.
Diane Olsen, without a doubt, is at the top of my list.
J. Schlenker
Dave Lager
Mark Nolan
Anne Fifield
Mary Kingsford
Dana Brown
Violet Patton

Tell us about your writing process.
Once I have an idea in mind, I scribble; no matter where I am, I scribble a note, a setting, a conversation, a character’s name, or a trait. I admit I’m a “pant-ser.” I write by the seat of my pants. I am not a plotter. I do not plot out my stories. They evolve.

I write a little every day with my Yorkie sitting on her pillow in my lap. She will be the first to tell anyone who will pay attention that she is the writer. I only listen and put her words into the computer.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, of course, I do. They’re my imaginary friends. They guide me on the path of my storytelling. I talk to them all the time—their opinion matters.

What advice would you give other writers?
Take writing classes. Offer to swap Beta reading with other authors. Read as many books as possible. This way, you will see the good and the bad in writing. And write something every day; a paragraph or two is still writing. Do not throw away the stuff you don’t like. Save it. One day you will pull it from the shelf and either see the errors or find it wasn’t so bad after all.

Do not have family/friends critique your work. They love you. Their words will always be filled with praise. Persevere.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
So many friends urged me to publish my stories, so I did. I self-published under my doggie, Zoe’s name.
“Magical Zoe Publishing.”

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
There is no doubt in my mind that indie publishing is the wave of the future. The big houses will remain for the ultra-famous writers, but with the influx of people who want to write, whether they will be famous or not, indie publishing is the way it will go.

What genres do you write?: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Memoirish in Short Stories

What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print

“Reviewed By Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers’ Favorite

Princess Caroline of Basset Hound Kingdom is off on another adventure with the twins, Willow and Daisy. It all starts when they scrounge around in the dark, dirty castle cellars, their own version of a treasure hunt. They find a journal written by Knight Theo Howler, and they set off on a quest to reunite this mysterious knight with his journal.

The journey takes them to the St. Bernard Kingdom, where everything is bigger, and evil is afoot. But the knight is somewhere in this kingdom, and the basset hound royalty won’t leave without finding him. Danger lurks everywhere as even the princess’s life is threatened. Will they find the knight and make everything right again to return to their own Basset Hound Kingdom?

Anne Fifield’s middle-grade novel, Princess Caroline’s Adventures: The Missing Knight, is the fourth book of this series. The plot has everything an adventure-seeking young reader could want in an exciting story where the main characters are basset hounds and St. Bernard’s. The characters are well developed and believable (as all dogs are), and the setting is adequately described.

There’s lots of dialogue to make the plot development easier for the early reader to follow. With a few instances of humor, including the carriage ride driven by the not-so-experienced so-called driver, this is a light and entertaining read mixed with just enough adventure and good against evil conflict. The sepia tone illustrations add to the plot development and help the young reader feel part of the story. Another great read to inspire young readers to love books.”

“For the Soul: A Collection of Short Stories was written by Barbara Daniels-Dena. Quilts, children, and dogs – what more can life offer? Well, stories, of course. And, where there are quilts, children, and dogs, there’s bound to be lots of stories. Life is full of stories: funny stories, heart-wrenching and heart-warming stories, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Like the author, I recall spending hours rifling through my grandmother’s button box.

There were all kinds of buttons: large, small, brightly colored, shiny, or dull. These buttons were a source of inspiration for stories, learning to count, learning the colors, and just savoring the precious moments spent with my grandmother. Life and those accessories we collect during our lifetime are full of stories. But so are our imaginations, our dreams, and the random thoughts that swirl around in our heads – so many stories to share.

Barbara Daniels-Dena’s book, For the Soul: A Collection of Short Stories, is a marvelous collection of stories the author wrote through the years. Each one is dated and, like the one about the black-turned-white crow with a hidden agenda and a secret message, there is often a footnote of what or who inspired the story.

Each story is complete and succinctly told with great attention to detail, though often sparsely revealed in the author’s clever way of leaving the spaces between the lines loaded with veiled messages. The plots are compelling and the characters well defined, making this collection an enjoyable read: not to be read all at once, but to be savored over time.”

Briana Johnson

ABOUT THE NEW AUTHOR:

New Indie Author Briana Johnson has released her first Christian-themed children’s/YA fiction titled “Wait for the Turtle,” available on Amazon Kindle & Amazon Books online. Briana’s earliest memories involve telling made-up stories to an audience of stuffed animals. After her brother was born, she had a new captive audience. Her family encouraged her to begin writing these bedtime stories down, and the writing bug bit.

She currently lives in Warrenton, GA, with her family, a spoiled rotten cocker spaniel (Hershey Kisses), and a squeaky toy-obsessed Yorkie (Buttons). To say she’s a ‘dog-lover would be putting it mildly. Growing up, dogs were always a particular part of her family, and she loves to see the joy their puppies bring into the lives of their new families as well.

Briana still enjoys writing for children. Through her stories, she longs to point kids to Christ and teach them the necessary truths to help them grow. Her hobbies include cooking, sewing, paper crafting, various other crafting styles, reading, writing, and raising puppies alongside her family. She attends Grace Baptist Church and is a born-again Christian (saved on March 11, 2015).

Now A Little About Her In Briana’s Words:

“Tell me a story, Sissy!”

This was a frequent request I heard from my little brother around bedtime. Of course, I couldn’t refuse.

I’ve always enjoyed creating stories. My first audience was the stuffed animals which lived on my bed, who often became actors as well. When I was eleven, with some encouragement from my family, I began writing down these stories.

By high school graduation, I had compiled a shelf full of notebooks and numerous computer folders, all filled with stories, story ideas, or parts of stories I dreamed of one day writing and publishing. However, life got busy and writing was put on the back burner for while.

After taking some college writing classes, (Beginning Writer’s Workshop with Carmen Marquez, Writeriffic: Creativity Training for Writers with Eva Shaw, and Write Fiction Like a Pro with Steve Alcorn) the writing bug bit once again.

The Lord has blessed me with a creative imagination and the talent to write stories. Although there is still much to learn… “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.”
~Psalm 18:30~

How to build your author fan base?

When writing a book, you always want someone to recognize your work and eventually fall in love with it. No one really wants the countless sleepless nights he or she spent in writing to be all for nothing. If you have done everything right, people will buy your book, read it, put it on the shelf, and maybe forget about you or your work after a month or two.

That is not something you want to happen. You need to build your fan base, you need people that will wait in excitement for a new release from you, you need people who will tell all their friends and relatives about your books. But how to achieve that?

First of all, you have to know your target audience. For example, you can’t expect children to read a book about politics or something more romantic and vice versa, you will not see any adult read a book about a rabbit with superpowers, except if it is a bedtime readable for their children. You should set yourself a target audience for which the content of your books would be relevant. Then you can start advertising your book on social media, or on your own website.

Okay, now that we have set our expectations, we need to think about how can we fulfill them. A great way to make your readers become your fans is by interacting with them. Social media is your main weapon in this fight. You can make promos for your new books, you can post a teaser of your new project, you can make a “questions & answers” post in which people who have bought your book can find a bit more about you as a person. Letting them closer to your life will mostly benefit you, people love to feel a close connection to each other, and you can use that to your advantage.

How to Create a Book Out of Your Blog Content | Elegant Themes Blog

You can make a blog and post stories from your life which can help your fan base to be more involved with you, you can also make giveaways, in which you can put a free copy of your book up for one lucky reader to get.

Now that we’ve briefly covered the author promotion and social media marketing, we have to look at our fan base expectations towards the book itself. If your book is a huge success and you want to make a sequel, there are some unwritten rules you need to follow.

First of all, you should never change the main part of the storyline too much, because your readers would most likely purchase the second part of your product, just because they liked the first one very much, and when something is very good you should not change it, you only want to expand it.

The characters can “evolve”, but for this to happen you have to set a slower rhythm. For example, a bad bloodsucking vampire can’t fall in love with the innocent girl that randomly came to his house. His behavior can change, but not immediately, this will help keep the interest of the reader and will look a lot better story-wise.

Of course, you can always ask your readers about what do they want, and if you feel like fulfilling all of their expectations, you will raise your prominently book sales. Another thing you should remember is thinking twice about making drastic decisions towards plot twists. Most of the readers love seeing plot twists happen because they want your book to be unpredictable before its end, no one wants to read a book where you can predict the ending after reading the first thirty pages. Making a plot twist is a high-risk, high-reward move.

In the past, whole fan bases have turned against their favorite author because of a bad decision for a plot twist, you would rather avoid a similar situation because it would greatly damage your reputation and most likely put your book sales number on a hold.

Building a fan base is hard, it requires a lot of time and dedication, but once you succeed in this manner, you will find out how this will affect your life. Your fan base can become your friends, even your family. Don’t look at your books only like a matter of living, look at them as a way to express yourself, as a way to change people’s way of thinking, or even changing their life.

Having a fan base that always buys your new books without hesitation is the best thing that can happen to an author, it means that your books are worth something much more than their prices in the bookstore, it means they have a value that no money can match, and last, but not least, it means a lot for your value as a person.

About The Author

In 2006, she became heavily involved in basset rescue and co-founded another one in 2011.

Thus, “Princess Caroline’s Adventures Series was born.” All the characters in her books are actual rescue dogs. Their pictures are on the back of each book.

Anne and her husband enjoy retired life and reside in the ‘Great State of Texas.’

Then, she learns her father, King Archie Longear of Basset Hound Kingdom, has decreed an arranged marriage. Princess Caroline will have no say in the matter. She’s furious! Stubborn Princess Caroline decides to take matters into her own paws. She travels throughout the Kingdom to find a bachelor of her own choosing.

The mission is a bumpy journey filled with frightening adventures and self-discovery. Was King Archie right in his original decree, or was Princess Caroline correct in conducting her own search?”

“The Bassets are at it again and this book is as good as royal gold when it comes to an old fashioned medieval mystery. Except the characters are all dogs, mostly Basset hounds to be precise led by their fearless….most of the time…leader Princess Caroline. Even though these are middle school novels, I enjoy reading them as they tickle my funny bone imagining the situations the dogs find themselves in. Plus we are able to see the pictures of the real dogs after whom the characters are named. Look in the back of the book”…

“Princess Caroline and her friends, Daisy and Willow, make new friends and learn a few important lessons as they travel to relax and vacation at Lake Ahroo! As usual, we have stubborn behavior among the basset friends, a few disasters and, finally, some clear-headed decisions that help to save the day. The bassets also learn to accept a new friend, Chief the German Shepherd. The tale is delightful, full of twists, turns and surprises. Anne Fifield has another hit on her hands with book 2 in this series. Everyone will delight in this story”…
