Behind the Door is a romance/thriller novel written by A. Gavazzoni and published in July of 2016. Although this is her first novel, Gavazzoni does not disappoint with this new sense of eroticism mixed with a thrill factor. In the start of the novel, we are introduced to Simone- a psychologist specializing in sexual behavior disorders. Simone is sought out by Carl, a New York attorney who is asking for her help. Carl explains that his client/friend is facing a murder charge from a sex game gone bad. In order to help Simone get a true feel of the relationship shared by the deceased woman, Lara, and Carl’s client, Mark, she is given a journal to read from Mark’s perspective on the relationship. While Simone is trying to focus on her work and helping Carl, she soon finds herself involved with helping another friend/colleague with information pertaining to a serial killer in town.

Behind the Door is nothing like what is usually found in erotic novels, as this is as un-cliché as it gets. From the first page, I felt pulled in as a reader. The amount of suspense that comes along with reading this novel is unlike anything I have come across so far. Throughout the novel, the sequence would take turns from being “Current day,” which is Simone’s life as she is reading, to Mark’s journal, which is full of past events about his relationship with Lara. Reading about the relationship shared by Lara and Mark was totally consuming, mainly because it was written to feel completely real, and unexaggerated. We learn why Lara has turned to sex in the way that she has, and why Mark feels drawn to her in return.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how true and realistic the legal terminology is expressed in this novel, and upon further research into the author, I discovered that she is a professor of law as well as an attorney. Often while reading stories with legal involvement, I find information to be presented as unlikely and “made for television.” This was not the case with Behind the Door. Gavazzoni shows great talent with writing thriller novels, as well as the romantic/erotic genre.

Errors in the novel were very minimal, and I feel as though they were mostly errors with my digital copy, such as an extra space between words, or a random page break. The book seemed edited well, aside from a few minor errors. There is also a need for reader discretion for this book, as the sexual content and language portrayed is for a mature audience only.

As a fan of thriller and erotic genres, it’s no surprise that this novel was able to capture and hold my attention, but I feel like it could do the same for others as well. I can easily say that it takes a lot for a novel to come across as unpredictable to me, but I can say without a doubt that Behind the Door does. Because of the constant surprise and intense interest, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book for others who enjoy a good thriller, and obviously don’t mind some rather unconventional sex.

The novel’s narrator is the great-grandson of Billy Battles, whom he meets for the first time when the old man is nearing the end of his days. The Finding Billy Battles trilogy tells the amazing story of a man who is born in 1860 and who dies in 1960. In between Billy lives an improbable and staggering life of adventure, peril, transgression. and redemption. Then Bill mysteriously disappears. For several decades his family has no idea where he is or what he is doing.

Finally, with his life coming to an end, Billy resurfaces in an old soldiers’ home in Leavenworth, Kansas. It is there when he is 98 that he meets his 12-year-old great-grandson and bequeaths his journals and his other property to him — though he is not to receive them until he is much older.

Years later, the great-grandson finally reads the journals and fashions a three volume trilogy that tells of his great-grandfather’s audacious life in the old west, as well as his journeys to the Far East of the 1890s–includingFrench Indochina and The Philippines–and finally, in the early 20thcentury, to Europe and Latin America where his adventures and predicaments continue.One thing readers can be sure of, wherever Billy Battles goes trouble is not far behind.

I normally find the second book within a trilogy or longer series somewhat lacking in comparison to first. In fact, I’ve come to expect it as a given rule and start reading every sequel with that same expectation. Then, every once in a while as I’m sitting there feeling quite smug in my conviction, A Ronald E. Yates comes along with a sequel every bit as good as his previous five-star work. It’s mind-blowing.

Finding Billy Battles is a historical fiction series like no other and reads like a memoir making it all the more believable. The story quickly draws you in and doesn’t let go. There is so much going on, you’ll be riveted for hours.

This particular work picks right up from where the first ended and it’s like you never put it down. Billy Battle’s journey from the Wild-west to the Orient becomes fraught with adventure and new dangers as he finds himself caught up in the middle of the Spanish-American war which is closely followed by the war of the Philippines. Not to mention his relationship with a German baroness whose character you cannot help but fall in love with. Another character I absolutely loved was Potts.

Then there’s Yate’s affinity for languages and colloquialism. I do not know all the languages, but judging from the ones I am fluent and know a little of, I found the phrasing and expressions to be spot-on; their use added much credibility to the story.

I really enjoyed reading the first book, Finding Billy Battles, so I was excited for the opportunity to read this second installment of the series. The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles did not disappoint. The historical events were woven into the narrative in a masterful manner. William and his close friends were usually participants in the events of the day, sometimes unwillingly. I was fascinated by the events in the Philippines as my knowledge before reading this book was non-existent.

I loved the way in which the story is told, it made me feel like I was experiencing those tribulations right along with the characters. Thought-provoking and intelligently portrayed, this exciting, action-packed book can be read as a stand-alone, but will be more fully enjoyed by reading the previous book before jumping into this one. I am really looking forward to the next book in this trilogy. For those who enjoy good historical fiction this book is highly recommended.

Finding Billy Battles: An Account of Peril, Transgression and Redemption (Finding Billy Battles Trilogy Book 1) (Kindle Edition)  Amazon Reader:

It’s been decades since I read anything resembling a wild-west story/legend. This historical fiction is that, and so much more. I take my hat off to Yates for providing me with one of the most entertaining stories I have ever read.

Yate’s is a truly gifted story-teller. He can take a well-known historical figures like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday and develop their characters in such a way that you feel like you didn’t know them as well as you thought, and you are left with the utmost admiration for them even though this story is not actually about them.

The story is really about Billy Battles, who is but a scrivener/journalist and his unfortunate clash with the Bledsoe family/gang that sends his life into a spiraling adventure throughout the old west fraught with life threatening situations and confrontations with some of the most notorious criminals of the time.

It is a truly amazing tale. I was captivated for hours. The penmanship is excellent. I did find some repetition in places, but this can be so easily amended, I found no issues with awarding the full five stars.

I am looking forward to reading Yate’s second & third books in this series!

In this the second book of the Finding Billy Battles trilogy the Kansas gunslinger sails to the Orient in an attempt to evade pursuing Pinkerton detectives. Grieving over the death of his wife, Billy hopes the mysterious East will provide the spiritual balm he desperately seeks. But it is trouble not tranquility that Billy finds aboard the S S China. A beautiful German baroness in distress enlists a reluctant Billy to join her on an adventure that transports the couple across three continents. Ron Yates’s knack for replicating authentic 19th century settings populated by intriguing characters both educates and entertains. This is a fun book, enjoy! Martin Henley.

This time, author Ronald Yates’ intrepid protagonist finds himself on a steamship en route to the Far East, trying to assuage the pain of losing his beloved wife. It isn’t long before Billy is immersed in a tumultuous world of action, adventure, and danger, all set against the backdrop of ever-unfolding cultural and political events.

Featuring superb plot and character development, the most salient aspect of Yates’ tale is his inimitable storytelling style. Though he’s chosen late 19th century Asia as the subject of his latest offering, one gets the sense Yates could write about any number of different topics with the same compelling skill, and the result would be the same: a rich, eye-opening yarn that proves impossible to put down. The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles is the sequel to Finding Billy Battles. I jumped right into this book without reading the first in this trilogy and found it to be a compelling story based on fact and expanded by narrative fiction.

Ted Sayles who is the great-grandson of Billy Battles inherits Billy’s journals and while writing this trilogy he stays very true to the language of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. While this book opens in 1894 with William (Billy) Battles heading for the Orient aboard the SS China it covers his time in the Far East, Latin America, and Europe.

It is aboard the SS China that Billy meets German Baroness Katharina von Schreiber. She is gorgeous and regal, far out of reach of a Kansas scribbler (journalist). Since you have probably read the book’s description I wrestle with what to share with you from this amazing story and journey that Billy Battles is about to embark on. So I have decided to quote this passage to whet your appetite. I quote:

“Katharina’s cabin was a bit larger than mine was, and like mine, its walls were covered with dark mahogany panels. In addition to the two overstuffed chairs and writing-table, she also had a small dining table. That is where we settled, she on one side and me on the other.

“I’m sorry, I have nothing to offer you to drink.” Then she paused, stood up, and walked to her wardrobe where she produced a tear-shaped bottle of Glenglassaugh single malt Scotch whiskey and two heavy cut crystal glasses. “Except for this.”
She returned and placed the glasses on the table in front of us. “May I?” she asked, and then uncorking the bottle, she poured two fingers in each glass. “This was my late husband’s favorite.”

I shuddered imperceptibly at that remark but pulled the glass toward me anyway. Images of Katharina pushing Baron von Schreiber over a cliff or poisoning him with arsenic-laced Wiener Schnitzler flooded my mind.

Murder, mystery, intrigue, people, places and events that were intended to divert Billy’s attention from his past soon gets him embroiled in Katharina’s past, with the German government, not to mention Chinese and Malay pirates. Later on, he finds himself perhaps the first American to be involved in the Anti-French insurgency in Indochina which will later be called Vietnam and involve America. War will not end there as he is forced into the Spanish-American War while in the Philippines.

Just as life takes many unexpected turns for Billy Battles so will your desire to keep turning the pages of this book to find out what is it about Billy Battles that causes him to try to escape his past, endure his new reality and find measured peace as he heads into the twilight of his life.

Lizzie is just barely making it as a waitress when she meets Dr. Grant Chatsworth, and their quick courtship ends in what seems to be a picture-perfect marriage. Not only is Dr. Chatsworth tall and good-looking, but he is also a renowned cardiac surgeon and researcher into a new treatment for congestive heart failure. But when Lizzie moves into Dr. Chatsworth’s estate, things begin to go sour very quickly.

Lizzie soon finds herself a captive, cut off from her sister Maggie—her only family—under Housekeeper Flossie’s increasingly baleful eye. She is miserable and wants to leave: not only does she no longer love Grant, but she is increasingly suspicious that his research might be bogus. During a party intended to lure wealthy investors for her husband’s research, Lizzie faints. Flossie immediately suspects that she’s pregnant, which galvanized Lizzie into launching an escape plan.

Clara, Dr. Chatsworth’s nurse, also suspects he might be up to something, and joins causes with Lizzie, skimming money from the practice to help Lizzie escape to her sister’s house. Feeling that Baby Belle is trying to contact her from beyond the grave gives Lizzie purpose, especially when she realizes the graves in that area are all labeled “Lunatic”. Lizzie is determined to unravel the mystery of Baby Belle and to achieve justice for the little lamb whose gravestone doesn’t even bear her last name.

As Grant Chatsworth’s empire begins to crumble, he becomes determined to find Lizzie and kill her before she can reveal what she knows. Can Lizzie stay hidden long enough to have her baby? Will Grant Chatsworth be shown up for the fraud that he is? Will the mystery of Baby Belle’s life and death save Lizzie, or kill her before Grant Chatsworth can?

Kim Carter’s Sweet Dreams, Baby Belle is a fast-paced action story with a subplot of messages from beyond the grave. It’s just the slightly spooky thing for readers who are interested in psychic phenomena.
